I'm with Garinda .. can't succumb to people who would vandalise our town centre or will never get anywhere .. they will look lovely and good luck to HBC on this. You were all grumbling that the new Broadway was too sterile, this will soften it .. no pleasing some folks.:p |
Re: PB Is Gointo Make Us All Happy Residents
I think they'll brighten the place up. It's like buying a plant or a bunch of flowers for your home - it does make the place look bright and cheerful. Let's just hope they are looked after and, if they get dug up by vandals, that somebody will be on the ball to put them back in order again, not like that flippin broken tree that was left there for ages.

New York in the 70's and 80's was hell on earth. Murder capital of the world, full of graffiti, and people who would mug you for the price of a Coke. It was the capaign by Mayor Giuliani that changed it all around. The city politicans decided that they weren't going to give in to the mindless vandals, and the small minority of anti-social people who were spoling it for the rest. So instead of accepting that the subway trains were covered in graffiti, they'd clean them, and when they were attacked with spray cans again, they'd clean them again. When a plant was pulled up, they'd replant it. Every small issue was addressed. Again, and again, if need be. There was a massive change around because of this initiative. Slowly, through these small actions, civic pride returned, proving that small things do have an important part to play in the bigger picture. Today New York is one hell of an improved city, and all because people didn't accept that the bad few were going to win. Although I've criticised HBC many times, they, and Peter Britcliffe, have my total support over this initiative to improve the borough. |

Glad it was only horse muck, I though you were accusing me of fertilising the flower beds.:D |
Re: PB Is Gointo Make Us All Happy Residents
Why dont they just bring back the raised beds what they used to have in front of woolies and m&s. Wouldnt they be easier to look after than flower towers and they could be planted with bulbs that could come up every year and so then wouldnt have to be replanted every year and so in the end work out cheaper.

Re: PB Is Gointo Make Us All Happy Residents
Good sign this afternoon on my daily trip down to the club, heavy police and police support officers presence in front of the town and along Broadway, talking to the kids on bikes and skateboards and directing them to the skateboard park up St James St, it's high time something was done to stop them riding these things in town centre, it's not only destructive, but dangerous to pedestrians, so good on you PB if it was you or to whoever organised it.

and have you noticed they havent put benches under the shelter bits outside woolworths etc...derrrrrrr |
Re: PB Is Gointo Make Us All Happy Residents
Those benches are flippin freezing in winter too. I always remember my Grannie telling me not to sit on stone walls or I'd get piles and now the council has provided us with even colder seats!
Those raised flower beds were removed so the market could have a temporary home on Broadway whilst they demolished the old site and built the new 'pavilions'. I think they call them pavillions to make us feel like they did us a favour giving us something new and posh. PB then said that he wanted Broadway to be more open plan to accommodate the French market and any other fairground attractions they fancied having in future but any continental markets we've had have been along the front of the market hall ever since!! Which is typical. Even if we had something with bulbs in it would still need maintaining - keeping weed free and litter free and it would need careful planning to have a show of flowers throughout the summer so that as one lot died off another lot would bloom. Bedding plants may sound more expensive bur it's probably just as cost effective in the long run with the man hours etc. That hanging basket tree idea on the roundabout seems to have been forgotten lately and they used to look really nice. |
Re: PB Is Gointo Make Us All Happy Residents
wonder if they will stick hanging baskets all up ossy again, they do look nice but it must be very costly!!

Re: PB Is Gointo Make Us All Happy Residents
If they do, let's hope they remember to water em!

Re: PB Is Gointo Make Us All Happy Residents
I know dandelions are supposed to be weeds, however, travelling down Dunkenhalgh Way, round the roundabout and heading for Hyndburn Road, couldn't help thinking how pretty all those yellow flowers looked.
That didn't cost anything at all. Suppose when the clocks come out though will be getting them stuck all over our windscreens .. but will have been mowed down by then I presume. Got plenty on my little lawn too .. expect my neighbours don't think they are pretty, and no it's not true, don't make you pee in bed .. :D |
