Even if you do mind I'll continue to use my Blue box for cans

I got a card through the letterbox today I MUST NOT USE MY BLUE BOX FOR CANS AND BOTTLES.

Here we go again,
recycling I have no problem with the theory of it but can we a least have a little give and take?
The Council expect me to have all cans washed, all plastic containers crushed, all paper sorted, no shiny stuff, no envelopes with windows, no staples.

These irritating things I do reluctantly even though I don't think it should be my job.
The one concession I give myself is that I use my plastic box for cans and glass bottles, is this because I want to be awkward? No, it's because for me it is practical, the house I live in isn't big enough for me to keep cans, bottles etc in the house so the box is in the yard. If I was to use a sack there is a good chance that before it had any real weight in it it would blow away, it also rains a lot in my back yard so carrying a soaking wet sack through the house once a fortnight is another no, no. At least most of the water drains out of the box.

If the council will not allow me this one little compromise there is another solution, I have a big grey wheelie bin in the yard, everything can fit in there easily.:p

Re: Even if you do mind I'll continue to use my Blue box for cans

do you mean your plastic bottles?
i use me blue box for glass only and use me blue bag for cans, plastic and the other:confused:
i dont wash em out, what if you had a water meter, are the council gonna pay for it....are they eck!!
ive started recycling me cardboard, and untill now never realised how much of it i waste!!!

i take it, it was only you less that got the letter?

Re: Even if you do mind I'll continue to use my Blue box for cans

i went to my friends in london they have two wheelie bins one for all recycling stuff and one for general waste the recycable bin gets picked up weekly and non recycling fortnightly it works well because it incurages people to recycle more because that gets picked up most.and you dont have to keep different things in different bags or containers.

Re: Even if you do mind I'll continue to use my Blue box for cans

I put glass bottles and cans in the box, which is what we were told to do originally, (the council now want tins and glass bottles in the blue sack),

I don't know if anyone else got a letter perhaps I am the troublemaker around here that an example will shortly be made of because I want to continue using my blue box for cans?:)

Sorry just read the nice new blue sack they gave me today, (even though I still have my old blue sacK, I just hadn't put it out 'cos one plastic bottle didn't seem worthwhile).

On My old blue sack it is printed that they want plastic containers in it, on my new blue sack it's plastic bottles and tins, so not glass bottles!:)

That means they would have to pay more more people to sort it and therefore reduce the budget for the wages of those sat in the ivory towers making stupid decisions, and deciding what colour of bag to use !!

Re: Even if you do mind I'll continue to use my Blue box for cans

I used to prefer to put cans in the blue box too, dont know why they had to change it, I do wash out everything, it really irritates me if my other half doesn't, in my defense though I keep the blue bag under the stairs so if the cans aren't washed out you can smell the stuff in them, which isn't nice after a few days.

Re: Even if you do mind I'll continue to use my Blue box for cans

I keep the blue sack in the yard at the side of the blue box and yes it does get full of water and no I don't trail it through the house - I get the kids to take it out the back and bring it round the corner to the front. Same with the box. Good job we don't live in the middle of our long row or they'd probably object to having to walk that far. I've been putting cans in the sack for ages - we got a leaflet about it yonks ago.

Unfortunately Willow my children have grown up and flown the nest so I can't be cruel like you and force them to do the dirty jobs.:D

I am not trying to bring down the government, I just want to use my blue box for cans and bottles, I have to store these things like you, for a fortnight, so my priority is what is the best way for me to do that? The answer is, in my blue box. The council only have to deal with my box for a very brief moment once a fortnight and it is easy enough for them to see what is in it.

I and many more like me I'm sure will continue to do our bit of recycling but why do the Council feel they have to threaten us to do it rather than encourage us to do it by just being a little less strict about which container we put this rubbish out in?

You could have filled that wasted space with a marquee encouraging us to do the right thing and always recycle, (in a reponsible manner, of course).:D

Re: Even if you do mind I'll continue to use my Blue box for cans

i have had the same problem, the blue bags are an absoloute joke so i have got 2 blue boxes, one for plastic and cans and one for glass, i go through a load of plastic for some reason so i fill up a box every 2 weeks (sometimes quicker) one day a stray can had accidentaly fallen into the glass box when i put them out so i to received a note through the door and the box was`nt emptied because te dimwit just assumed the box was mixed, glass an tins he refused to empty it!!!!! i was fuming i have recycled for years even before hbc jump on the right on band wagon so i let rip on the phone, eventually i got a call back from someone of authority in the councils recycling dept and i told him that the bags were just no good for me so i will continue to use my blue boxes but will put the correct items in together, he said this was fine and would just put a note on my address details for the bin men to expect my stuff in blue boxes and not a box and a bag. not had a problem since!!!! although i do tink that one recycle bin for all items would encourage recycling because people just can`t be bothered paying council tax AND separating they`re waste. phewwwww!!!

Re: Even if you do mind I'll continue to use my Blue box for cans

Use the blue box for glass jars and bottles only. Rinse debris from cans and glass containers before putting them in the box. Wash out your box occasionally as this will help keep it clean

Click here to view HBC web site...

I got a note saying the same thing.... but on there web site it tells another story:

all this messing about is crazy and a waste of rate payers money:

how flipping hard can it be to have some workable system:

I also took the chip out of my blue box:

I always wash cans and so on... if not in the summer there will be shed loads of flies.... what with pet food tins and so on: HENCE they are better in a bin with a lid:

MADNESS party and the word Brewery spring to mind at the mention son HBC

I won't comment on my bins, it only upsets some people.

In the Ribble Valley they are using one wheelie bin for non-recyclable and one wheelie bin for recyclable, its a much better idea.

For us to change and do that, someone at Hyndburn would have to admit they were wrong,

Can you see that happening?

No, neither can I.:(

Here in Rossendale we have a blue wheelie bin for recycling everything but papers go in there. Green bin for everything else. Sack for paper.
