I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
I went to the M & S superstore in Warrington today. I was returning a top I'd bought for £12 (which didn't fit) and I bought another for £15, a pair of shorts for £10, some underwear for £6, a vest top for £6 and a pair of sandals for £35. The assistant added it all up, on the till, and charged me £40. It wasn't until I got home that I realised I had been undercharged by £20.
Now if it had been the other way, and I'd been overcharged, I'd have been on the phone straight away and back in the store tomorrow. To my shame (well, a bit) I just felt rather pleased and a bit smug. If I was undercharged in a small corner shop, struggling to survive, I'd go back and tell them they made a mistake. I'm not inclined to do the same with M & S. Am I a hypocrite or just morally corrupt? What would you do? |
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
are you sure some of the items weren't discounted or did she miss putting some of them through the till??

Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
westender sod the guilt, you got a RESULT.;)

Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
If it makes you feel better, ring them up and tell them you think a mistake was made. Ask them what the best method of rectifying it is because you will have to travel 40 miles each way to sort it. They will just say don't bother and you will be cleared of all sins :D

Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
Agree with what you say about if it had been a small corner shop , but not a multi-national corporation whos suppliers probably exploit third world sweat shop labor .
Write it off as a further example on declining standards in education, in the good old days a shop assistant would have been able to do the math in her head. |
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
:Banane28: well honesty cost nothing but you have to live with it good look to you
|
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
Inform them and maybe get vouchers for being honest whilst still keeping the £20.. am I living in a dream world? :p

Legally the law is on your side. Retailers can't recoup mistakes after they have made them, though some will try, especially if you paid by card, so keep an eye on your statements.
Enjoy your windfall.:) |
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
nice one....worry about it next week....:D although the ring them up thingy from lancs dave is the proper thing to do...
|
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
I would contact them and let them know. Anyone can make a mistake. It probably doesn't seem as important when it's a big retailer but I would till feel that I had something I wasn't entitled to.
Some people think that pilfering from a large store doesn't matter either as they can't see anyone really losing out but we all lose out because prices overall have to be increased to cover such losses. The profits they make, sweatshop labour etc are a different subject. I just couldn't rest easy if I didn't let them know that I thought I'd been undercharged. |
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
Give the money to charity ... or some of it. That way the money does more good than it would have in the pockets of M&S and you still get a little treat for yourself :)

Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
To assuage any guilty feeling you could always go and buy a jar of M & S pickled walnuts.:D

For you all know that conscience is mortal's chiefest enemy
(I wish I had said that; happy birthday Will.) |
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
Me i would ring them up and say are you sure this is right. Because some places if their till is down take the money out of the assistants wages to make up whats wrong. First though check your receipt and see that theyve charged you right.

Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
yes check your bill as items sometimes have been reduced without marking them down.i have been short changed before in small shops and gone back never have they give me my money back.more chance of a big store giving it back .so you got a result treat yourself and enjoy.swings and roundabouts.what goes round comes round!!

Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
when my kids were small I was once given too much change in Marks and said to the assistant "Excuse me I think you have made a mistake" she replied "We are trained not too make mistakes" I pocketed the tenner and felt quite wealthy, a lot of money 35 years ago.
so don't feel guilty they are trained not too make mistakes........... |

I beleive honesty is the best policy for my own conscious sake & it has its rewards:) They would just say {hopefully for good customer relations** as it was error from the staff not that u had taken it, so beleive they would not ask for it back & thank you for your concern so that their staff takes more care in future or clear up the fact it could of been a reduced offer or something legit so therefore puts your mind at rest:) |
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
Just a bit of a tangent here but I remember somebody telling about a job interviewer who would leave the room and drop some money on the floor 'without noticing' - the people who returned the money to them were the ones who went on the shortlist.
I just couldn't live with myself if I wasn't honest. |
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
I wouldn't think twice about it, keep it, its their mistake, the assistant wont be in trouble because it hasn't been charged so the till wont be down.
|
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
why not take your reciept and go to M and S in blackburn and if you have been given to much they will probably let you keep it put it in a charity box
|
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
The only thing I would feel guilty about is going into M & S in the first place. I don't know which is worse - their overpriced pre-prepared meals or their dreary cheap made clothes. The fact is that this company was on it's way out until a few years ago; it has been saved by by a slick advertising campaign aimed solely at women which has proved remarkably successful.
Well, we all know how gullible the weaker sex is; you can sell 'em any old junk simply be telling 'em that it is quality. Personally, I think I would rather go down the pound shop. |

Keep the money, take it as a bonus.
I mean anywhere, where for a bit of fruit costs £10.00 can afford to loose £20.00. |
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
It wasnt your mistake. So you have nothing to feel guilty. Or you could go back and buy something for 20 pounds and give it them that way they get their 20 pounds back hehe
|
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
I would go and spend the £20 in M & S - so in theory they are getting it back
|
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
I found a £2 coin in m & s..and i told the girl, but she said keep it and ask next time if anybody had been back for it ,she said because i went in regular she would give it them back and i could give it her,,, but no one came back...does that make me honest:biggrin8: :biggrin8: :blush8:

Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
There is also the possibility that the check out assistant got a huge boll***ing at the end of the day. Many larger stores now have scanners under the till to identify the items which should have been processed through the till by the assistant. This is to stop the process known as 'sweethearting' where a 'customer' colluding with the assistant will seem to be ourchasing goods when in actual fact the assistant is 'under ringing'- charging for a cheap item several times instaed of scanning the actual project.

Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
No you should not feel guility, if you do go and buy some more clothes at the Accy branch.....Enjoy

Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
It's typical - I couldn't find the receipt last night. Got the one for the stuff I bought in the food hall but not the other one, I'm wondering if the assistant didn't put it in the bag. Anyway, being basically honest, I rang them today. The woman I spoke to couldn't grasp what I was trying to tell her and seemed convinced I had been overcharged. She kept saying, "Bring your receipt in and we can give you a refund".
I got it through to her, at last, and she was completely bewildered. She said she would make a check and ring me back before 3 p.m. She didn't ring! |
Re: I Feel a Bit Guilty. Should I?
Ah well westender least u left it their boat & your conscious clear, i would leave it now as im sure if there was any discrepancy to discuss im sure they'd of contacted u by now or least by end of the day:D Hey like ive experienced they are not used to someone ringing that they have been undercharged just usually when they have over charged, think u shocked em hehehehehehhe:D
