Asbestos

Got the asbestos men in this morning, taking out old emmersion heater cupboard in bathroom & a panel in the kitchen, its like ET with the UFO scientists hehehehe they are putting white tenting up atm, so banished to the lounge & cant go for a pee:(

Thing is they are taking this out because of them doing the bathrooms/kitchens in a month, but i do still have a load of asbestos left, ie built in wardrobes & even asbestos fibre in some of the walls, which they arent taking out [i'd have to move out:eek:] they say its safe because it isnt broken.

So how many of you have asbestos ??? Do u think its safe ??

entwisi 26-04-2007 08:02

Re: Asbestos

its teh dust thats dangerous as they say, unbroken its safe

We don't have any in our house that I am aware of (and its been pretty much stripped to bare walls since we came here) but I grew up in a house with asbestos roof to the shed etc. We were always climbing all over them. I'm not concerned about it.

MargaretR 26-04-2007 08:07

Re: Asbestos

Asbestos fibres breathed in can cause lung cancer and asbestosis for up to many years after they have been inhaled. I can lend you 2 air filtration machines which might help you (Amcor tabletop models) If you want to take up my offer send me a private message and I will give you my phone number for you to arrange collection.
I once had a ladies toilet incinerator pipe removed from Melbourne house when my job was 'building manager' - so I know what very severe precautions are essntial to limit risk

accymel 26-04-2007 08:13

Re: Asbestos

Cheers Margaret but cant borrow indefinately these guys are really taking precautions, i can hear staple guns & tape going sealing these tents tho they are a specialist asbestos removers, & all my external doors are open [its a bit nippy]. Just worries me a little as u point out the risks that they can quite happily leave asbestos in the house even undamaged [only takes one accident], but after arguing intently when inspectors have been up to no avail. Tho air filtrators sound like a good idea.

MargaretR 26-04-2007 08:20

Re: Asbestos

Leave all your windows open get a through draught to try to blow any particles out of the house, and wear a mask or fine woven cloth over your mouth and nose.
If you change you mind and want the machines for a week - just let me know
PS after any dust has been 'wet mopped' up you can go back to normal living

accymel 26-04-2007 08:23

Re: Asbestos

Okies thank you Margaret, should eb ok but will let u know if needed:thumbsup:

accymel 26-04-2007 08:33

Oo may not they have brought a massive tumble dryer pipes & machines, he's just told me that for sucking the air out when they are removing the stuff:rolleyes:

grego 26-04-2007 08:37

Re: Asbestos

I wouldn't worry about the stuff thats left Mel, like people have said its only dangerous when its broken, I live close to some pensioner bungalows and they've been having the same done, it was like a scene fron E.T with all the tents:)

MargaretR 26-04-2007 08:40

Re: Asbestos

That's good and sensible - no harm in asking them what you can do to limit the risk to you after the've finished -they seem to know their job - good that Hyndburn Homes seem to be choosing a good contractor.
You may well find the need to wet dust/wipe down all your furniture - a real chore - I had to do it for normal plaster dust last month. It is surprising how long fine particles linger in the air - needed to do it twice in a week after drilling of plasterboard for pipes for central heating.
I know you used to have warm air heating too - I am wondering whether I too have any asbestos in this flat - gee I hope not!!!!

Re: Asbestos

Yeh we used to have warm air heating - which glad that gone now LOL, it does worry u tho, i wll be asking them on any precautions & get them to check my in builts as on of the doors fell off & has come away from the panel.

MargaretR 26-04-2007 08:51

Re: Asbestos

I had plasterers last week to cover up the holes where 3 air vents had been removed. I was relieved to see that the air ducting was metal and not asbestos sheet. There was 30 years worth of muck in them but nothing harmful. Maybe our places were built about the same time, so when I get my new bathroom and kitchen next year I might need 'spacemen' too

WillowTheWhisp 26-04-2007 08:52

Re: Asbestos

We used to have asbestos mats in the science labs at school and a lot of them were broken at the edges. Nobody realised the danger in those days. Like Ian we used to have a shed with a corrugated asbestos roof and as long as it was intact that was OK. It's the fibres from the broken edges which cause the problems. It was normal to have teapot stands and a panel on your ironing board made of asbestos when I was younger.

It sounds like a scifi scene up there Mel - hope you won't be inconvenienced for too long.

I've got one panel in built in thats broken in half cleanly but even housing inspectors have passed that as fine no need to remove  i'll ask these guys after if i get chance. They said about till 2pm they'll be finishing but thats if theres no delays.

At least they are building what we called "negi" tents to keep all the fibres in the area they are striping so that it dosnt get out in to the comunal air. have they got decontaminatin units near by for when they head for a brew or their pieces? If they are pro's and are good at the job they are doing you are safe but do ask how well sealed the tent is and what are they sealing it with apart from staples?

Not being nosey but have worked with bug removal on an industrial scale and know how lethal it is.

If u call this posh industrial caravan towed on back of their truck a decontamination unit - then yes:D

They are stapling it & sealing it with thick black tape, & they were very thorough about it & they have the air machine with the big tubing on the go as well as open windows doors, so confdent that they are thorough & pro's:D

Yeh spinner in in builts its in panel form, the bathroom cupboard is its mixed with cement, have some of the walls surrounding it with % asbestos in, if its got white fibre dust - thats asbestos.

Agreed. They are doing it properly. The air machine is to keep the tent at a lower preasure than the area outside hence "negi". Any PVA glue around to be sprayed on the inside of the tent to catch stray fibres?

They have to be. Due to errors mad by the company I worked for during bug busting they had to put a large pot of dosh aside for future illness payments. The stuff even when whole and undisturbed is still a future risk and considering what it does to the lungs makes the inconvenience a blessing.

If it is deamed safely concealed with little or no chance of damage they will leave it and come back at a later date and remove it. The company will be contracted to remove the most obvious and thus dangerous parts first.

Emm well the council think so but im sceptical especially in in built wardrobes/cupboards where it can be banged about or scraped, a door casing fell off that was attached to an asbestos panel - not broken but not concealed except with door curtain:rolleyes:

Yeh most probably, had the guy look at the rest of the asbestos areas like the built in & his professional view is that they should be removed, admittantly not an sos job but should be removed soon tho, a woman up the rd has has pestered enough that these guys are taking hers out next week, but has said that even the one with no door on it has said its ok as its entact.

Well the guys left 1/2 hr ago, with the all clear on the removed stuff all that was left to clean was fine dust on the floor that is safe to hoover & mop as asbestos free but only cement dust, quite impressed how cleanly they took it all out, the scientist guy gave both areas all clear & safe:D Got pics of the finished result, mmm cant wait for them to finish it tho still looks like a builders wreck tho.

look at room and seel worke men in untill they have got pannels down then they can exit .if you left window open you risk spreding all over you dont want any drafts at all.if they dont brake pannels no risk .dont forget any pannels they are removing damp down first this will decrease any dust .i worked for a recycling company for two years this is good practice.main thing to remember is that tiny contact is not harmfull working all the time with it is. that is why any one who knows what they are doing will take all precortions possible when pannels sre removed they should vacume up the area with a vacume that does not let any air loss hope this helps but dont worry u will be fine.

A bit nervous of them, they have put 2 support timber to support the mini landing altho from the stairs u can see thro to kitchen thro the slit between plaster board & skirting boards, so was it u i heard then with the wobbly stair landing about last friday?? LOL Hopefuly im sure the inspector is coming tommoz to check them, had to warn the kids for not playing or jumping up & down the stairs just so not to tempt fate.

Just tested the bath out as well as its only 2 walls now, no movement so thats fine:D

Mind u walls sockets on the fridge side dont work altho worked fine till they plugged transformer in tho not their fault it didnt blow fuses or owt, but think its a problem that started when they took the econ 7 out, which has now knocked the circuit off when these guys tried to start, so got the electrican coming 1st thing.

My heating installation which started on 26th March is not over yet.
Had plumbers, electricians and demolition in 1st 7 days then a plasterer on Wed lastweek but no joiner yet.
I phoned HH on Tuesday to report a heap of plasterboard offcuts and removed air vents at the front door (plasterers rubble etc) and was told to expect removal same day and a joiner this week - neither has happened!
If they were better organised it would all be easier to cope with.

Thats almost what they did when I lived in Burnley. There was a Council owned estate not far from where I lived. It was rather infamous at the time :D. They emptied the whole house and gutted it. It looked like all they kept was the walls and completely redid the insides again. It would probably be cheaper and be a better job in the long term.

Re: Asbestos

My garage roof if made from asbestos. I have had a builder in recently and asked him whether I should think about a new roof (it is a bit leaky) and he said not to waste my money. He says it is in good condition so it is not dangerous. The leaks he is gonna fix with some special stuff. I have never used my garage cos of the asbestos, but he said it is fine so I might start using it. Although I would feel better without an asbestos roof.
