What makes them think they should do this?
I have lived here for just over a month now and for the third time during this time I have had the God botherers knocking on my door, why do they do that? What makes them think they have the right to knock on a strangers door and try to proclaim their views on what is and what isn't Gods view?
I didn't have this problem at my other house, was this because these busy bodies knew that area was predominantly Muslim so they would be wasting their time? If you are a committed Christian then good luck to you, just don't knock on my door, then I won't have to upset you when I tell you to go away in very few words! If you are correct then your God will ensure that I see the light in his own good time, he doesn't need interference from you. http://www.anvari.org/db/fun/Religio...Test_Drive.jpg |

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
It could be the last family to live there enjoyed them calling and used to call round on a regular round .
They will just have to get used to you telling them to go away in jurky movements or the other way is to put a kidney donor card in your window. |

I am completley with you on this one. I don't believe in God and i haven't done since i left St. Albans in Blackburn. How dare they think that they can come to my home and try to ram their beliefs down my throat. I don't go around knocking on peoples doors telling them that i don't believe that god excists. If that is what they believe, good for them just stay away from my door.

I suppose the only way to confuse them would be to invite them in, that won't have happened before and they will have to go away to look at what to do next in the training manual!

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
They used to prey on the young man next door to me (he has 'learning difficulties'). They came weekly and read the bible to him for about an hour. He didn't have the gumption to tell them to stay away.
I discussed it with his mother when she next visited. I cured the problem by constructing a poster on a website and printing it off- "Warning - Jehovahs witnesses, Mormons, Moonies, or any religion pusher, not welcome here" I bluetacked it to railing of our joint landing area and the visits stopped. I cannot give you the weblink for the poster construction site because I lost it in a computer re-formatt in March. |

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
If our missionaries call on you and you don't want them to call again simply tell them so and they should respect your wishes. They should also make a note of that for future reference so that when they leave and new ones come along they know not to bother you. If you are being pestered by the same guys when you have previously told them not to call again then you are perfectly justified in making a complaint about it. You'll know if they are our lot because they have little black plastic name tags with the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on and their own name "Elder Somebody-or-other" underneath. Sometimes they can be a little over enthusiastic but they should never make a nuisance of themselves.

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
We have those companies coming around every month at work, leaving items for you to buy with a form to fill in, etc., you will know the ones. Most of the items are c*ap, some not bad like outdated AA maps.. :D
Last Christmas a dot to dot book was left and when joined they displayed images of love making in extremely interesting positions .. just fun. Our Personal/Health and Safety Manager (you will know who I mean Less) took it on himself to withdraw this offending booklet from the canteen. I thought it was extremely petty as lots of magazines left in the canteen, such as Cosmpolitan, have some hair-raising articles. The following week, 'Lo and Behold' there lieth a copy of The Watchtower. Seemingly they had left a copy at reception and our gentleman had seen fit to leave this for us all to read, next to the remaining items from the aforementioned. I complained that I found this extremely offensive to my non-beliefs (which I did) and would report this to the Directors. Was only winding him up of course ... but was gone within the hour. Point is Bible punching is offensive to me. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
Although I am anti all religion I have great respect for the Salvation Army.
I saw what good work they did providing hostels for homeless itinerants - they are the only christians I ever gave money to. |

As per Margaret's post, have great respect for bodies like the Salvation Army as they don't use these tactics, except giving you some lovely hymns sung in town at Christmas and they never mention 'God' as you drop a couple of quid in their box. Also they show their love of people by helping the less fortunate amongst us. no matter what calling they have. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
Always find it quite intereseting to take up the subject of homosexuality with some of these individuals- sually resulting in some form of homophobic tirade about the bible saying how wrong such things are- usually quickly followed by a quote from Leviticus. Best response is to ask if they eat Pork?- same section, same book says you shouldnt so why be selective in what you will and wont take on board.

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
Well, Less, what happened was - I got a grant to see why some people of Hyndburn rejected all faiths, the project involves people from as many different faiths as possible coming round to the houses of people who have expressed an indifference to faith and finding out why. Over the next few months you will be visited by someone representing all major faiths and a few of the minor ones to find out why you are like you are! I'm not expecting this project to draw any conclusions.
;) :D |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
We had them knocking on our door last saturday at 9 30 in the morning,,,,, what time do they start..
They got the short shrift... i have better things to do at that time of day... |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
sorry aint in agreement with this Gayle, what you are saying to us is you got a grant for people to PESTER, people who are indifferant and DO NOT want pestering.:( this to me is just a waste of grant money.

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
I totally and absolutely agree - dont DARE to knock on my door!!!

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
We get the JWs all the time. Don't have a problem talking to them. They really believe in what they are doing, and are no doubt motivated by faith. Hell, they are my neighbours (in the sense that they are from my home town) so I invite them in, tell them to take a load off and give them a cup of coffee.
By the way, I don't extend the same courtesy to politicians after votes as I believe they are peddling an inferior product. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
well when ever i get them i simply say to them sorry no thanks. dont go any further as you,ll bee wasting your time and i wouldnt want to slam the door in your face , but goodbye..and at that they usually leave..

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
just tell em ur a recently converted muslim etc
make your area into a predominantly "muslim" area and watch them go i dont think i've had anyone knockin on my door for a few yrs now... i used to love reading their literature on how everything was going to be perfect etc and the way the black kids used to be holding hands with the white kids as they skipped past a tiger who was being patted on the head by a chinese girl |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
Aint had any for many moons but then we have secure access to the close so they cant get in. :D Why dont they have a list of people that have been visited but are happy as they are?

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
I find using the farmer's old trick of hanging moles on the fence, to deter others from coming, seems to help.:D

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
I respect people's faith, and their need to spread what they see as the truth, but I think all unsolicited calling should be outlawed. If people wanted to reach people they could do it in busy public places, such as shopping centres.
This would probably greatly benefit elderly or disabled people, who may struggle to answer the ding-dong ding-dong, or indeed people on nights, who may not take to kindly to having their peace disturbed. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?

Seriously Less, why do you believe them to be hypocrites? Our missionaries believe 100% in what they are telling people. They don't get anything out of it personally. They serve for 2 years, do so voluntarily and finance themselves. They are not paid a penny for it and most of them have been saving a 'mission fund' from Saturday jobs and holiday jobs for ages before they go. Some get help from parents or other members of their family and in some cases other members of the church donate to help. This just pays for their keep (food and shoe leather) whilst they are on their mission. So why do they do it? Well we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to hear the gospel even if they choose to reject it. At least then they can't complain that they missed out on something because nobody told them. Imagine if you lived at the bottom of a valley and further up the hillside a dam was about to burst - the people who lived near it saw it and moved away but didn't bother telling people further down the valley so when the damn burst the waters flooded down and their houses were destroyed and the people drowned whilst those from up the valley looked on from higher ground saying "They should have moved out." Maybe they would have moved out if they'd known. Maybe they'd have told the warning visitors to clear off and stop pestering them - but at least they'd have had the opportunity. This is why they do it. Actually they much prefer not to go 'cold calling' or 'tracting' as it is referred to within the church and would prefer to be referred to people who genuinely want to know what they have to say so they are chuffed to little mint balls when any of the members have friends who ask questions who they can then go and talk to by invitation. Yes, I agree with Garinda that street meetings are far less intrusive into people's personal lives and maybe with leaflet handouts that give people a contact number if they want to know more - we've done that in the past but I think it tends to be the council that doesn't go a whole hog on the idea. In truth every member of the church should be a missionary and talk to everyone they know about the church so I suppose I let the side down because I don't do that - but then again I also appreciate how frustrating it must be for someone who doesn't want to know as I have the same problem with Jehovah's Witnesses who try to convert me. So I will happily answer anyone's queries about Mormons but I'm not into pushing my religion onto anyone else without them asking. You may occasionally get a lad who has been 'pushed' into serving a mission by his enthusiastic family but those are few and far between and can be spotted a mile off. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
There’s no need to be rude.
A simple, “I’m not interested” and a firm closing of the door before they have a chance to reply does it for me. The same goes for tele surveys except I put the phone down. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
'I'm not interested...thank you'
would be even more polite.:D |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
Rather than admit to having no religion whatsoever (and so be a prime target for 'conversion') I say 'I'm Pagan' - I have seen hands go to throats ready to get out their crucifixes in defence :D
|
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
I've got a great deal of respect for pagans. More often than not they have respect for the earth and nature rather than abusing it.

i dont mean to sound rude willow but if they can respect the councils wishes then why cant they respect the wishes of the everyday person who dont want this type of thing at their door...... i have had so many calling lately that it becomes rather frusterating and repetetive , what will it take to stop it ? a sign at my door saying "please dont bother , im happy with my own religion" im sorry but it shouldnt happen.. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?

Of course that won't stop people of different denominations calling on you because obviously they don't liase with each other. A notice in a window near your door would stop our guys, they are told to respect things like that and I presume the same goes for others too. At one time we did get Jehovah's Witnesses calling here a lot and I didn't mind them coming nor mind having a chat or discussion with them. I've often invited them in if I haven't been busy and we've had some very interesting discussions. In fact one guy left here with a copy of The Book of Mormon because he was curious about some of my beliefs, and I ended up going to their church one week because I was curious about theirs. I think they've given up on me now though because they know they aren't going to convert me so it's just wasting their time. If I'm busy and someone calls and I don't have time to talk to them I just tell them politely and they go away. It has never been a problem. If there was a law, or even a local little rule that no missionaries should make house calls then ours would of course stop doing so. They are taught to respect local laws and rules. If you really are being pestered by LDS missionaries then do please let me know because that should never happen. Recently they have been trying the 'chat to people in the street' approach too. Lots of people do that - I'm always being given leaflets, flyers, asked if I want a mail order catalogue etc. Some denominations use other subtle ways of winning kids over and I'm not so keen on those sort of tactics - our missionaries have also been told not to entice teens with stories of fun and games and sports teams they can join etc. It does happen with some other groups though and I agree that that can be extremely annoying as a parent to find your kids being lured into something which you as a parent may not agree with. This is something I personally feel very strongly about. Also where people with leaning difficulties are concerned who may not even understand what they are committing themselves to. Again, this should not happen but unfortunately sometimes it does. Anyway, like I said they don't know that you don't want to know until you actually tell them and once you've told them they should accept that and leave you alone. It doesn't gain anybody anything if they keep annoying people. If you find our guys doing that (and you'll know they are ours because they'll have their labels prominently visible) then do please let me know, with the name of the lads themselves (which is also on the label) and I shall pass on the information to the relevant person. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
I found some in the park once and explained to them that it was incredibly hard to believe what they were saying when they thought the world was only a few thousand years old.

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
I used to have witnesses knocking on my door all the time in Preston. I told them I was a Spiritualist and their first instinct was Daughter of Satan. One day I invited them in and chatted for hours bible in my hand. In the end I think I addled their Brain an d they didn't call again.
When we first moved to Accy it was the Mormons that were regular callers. They were a very insistent bunch. I listened to what they had to say and even went to the citadel with them one Sunday. They were interested in what I had to say about my religion but when they realised that they weren't going to make a convert of me they gave up. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
Well I got a mail from a religious political party today and that is a first. I am used to the idea of door visits or being stopped on the street but this was somewhat of a shock.

Re: What makes them think they should do this?
Reading this it reminds me of one time a friend invited some bible people in to our new house, at that time we only had 1 chair.
Anyway they came in sat on the floor we had a debate on religion, they where respectful and polite and left when asked, before they left they insisted on saying a prayer. They preyed and asked the lord to find us some furniture, and no word of a lie, in the morning in the front garden there was a settee and 2 chairs. It turned out a frend had dropped them off as he heard we needed some, but still made me think. They did return once more but when told we are not really into all that they left and never returned. I agree though they shouldnt really go 'called calling' as there are some vunrable people out there and IMO thats not really fair. |
Re: What makes them think they should do this?
Trouble with your 'mormon' lads Willow .. they were always were quite dishy, and hard to shut the door in their handsome faces ... ;) :D Definitely a sales ploy.
