Re: Met famous people
I met lots of famous people when I lived in London. After a while you become blase, and you realise that they are just like everyone else, some nice, some not so, and most somewhere in between.
It would be perhaps easier to list people I havent met, but through work I met most of the Royal Family, Diana being by far my favourite. President Clinton, Dustin Hoffman, David Bowie, Brian Ferry, Enoch Powell, Zubin Mehta, Pavarotti, Audrey Hepburn, Mike Tyson, to name a few of the more regular people I saw. Socially, from my time as a party whore, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Jodie Kidd, David Hockney, Jude Law, Stella McCartney, Kylie, Mick and Elizabeth Jagger, Liam Gallagher...and again lots more I remember partying with through a drunken haze,:D |
Re: Met famous people

Re: Met any famous people?
fame is a funny thing ,you can be famous in one place and unknown in another , a few years back I was in a bar in Toronto during 'happy hour' the place was busy and these two old gents came over and asked if we minded them sharing our table , ....."no problem , sit down" a few minutes later folks begin coming over and asking one of the old gents if he would give them his autograph , he obliged and away they went , this happened another 4 or 5 times , finally I leaned over and said , "excuse me , but are you someone famous" the one who had be signing the autographs said , " well some people do " me ......." well who are you then " the other old wrinkly then chips in "this is Mr Lawrence Welk " another blank look from me , I had never heard of the guy , seems at one time during the 60s and 70s the guy had the number one musical entertainment show on North American television.
nice old chap , years later I've watched his TV shows in re-runs and are they are pure smaltz , polkas and accordians ......... :D :D :D |
Re: Met any famous people?
On august 2, 1988 spend the day working in the White house (Oval Office, Cabinet Room, and Press Room). The Republican National Committee was doing some media segments with Ronald Reagan. He was a very genuinely nice chap.

I lived next to Jon Anderson [YES fame] what a legend. When I was at school I used to deliver milk with his brother, who was in a local band. I think they were called The Warriors.
See if you can name any of the [famous] people I have met in my [not so famous] career. R------ G---- J--- M---- T--- B---- H-- M------ T-- Q---- [Easy One] P------- A---- U-- G----- Lat week I was with Arthur Smith [Grumpy Old Men] and there are a few more, but I can see you are getting bored. |

Re: Met any famous people?
Yes they were called 'The Warriors' - John and his brother Tony were joint vocalists but John went on to become (very briefly) Hans Christian and then Jon Anderson. lead singer of 'Yes' and half of 'Jon and Vangelis' (Vangelis who wrote the 'Chariots of Fire' theme)

Re: Met any famous people?
There were only a couple of times when I had to pinch myself that I was actually there, when meeting well known people.
The first was when my housemate, a painter, was having people round to view his work. I was then living in a large Victorian house in Streatham in south London, and my housemate was always having these little 'at homes'. It was a Sunday morning, and I'd been out the night before, arriving home at about eight, and fely like death. The house was filled with Mark's paintings, and people wandered all over, glass of wine in hand, to view them. I was rudely woken by my bedroom door opening, and in marched the late actor Alan Bates, Sir Ian McKellen and Lord Montague of Beaulieu. They then all decided to sit on my bed, and ask why I wasn't up, where I'd been the night before, and did I want a drink. Well they say the hair of the dog is good for you, so it turned into quiet a good day.:) The second time I couldn't believe I was were I was, was in early 2000. I'd been invited by a friend to a dinner at the Carlton Club, in London's St. James. It turned out the dinner was upstairs in a private dining room, and there were eleven other diners besides myself, Margaret Thatcher being one of them! Being a student in the eighties, Mrs Thatcher seemed to be the Devil incarnate. Indeed my own Dad theatened to leave the country prior to 1979, and we even went to look at a water ski-ing school in Italy, which he was going to buy if she ever came to power, thankfully my Mum wouldn't leave my Gran, so that came to nothing. At the dinner I was sat right opposite Thatch, and I must confess she was most charming. She seemed genuinely interested in other people, and we talked about lots of things...but happily not politics. I was quite giddy at being there, imaganing what Jill, a miner's daughter from south Yorkshire, and my best friend from art school, would say if she could see me. All in all it was a very enjoyable evening. I did nearly make a major social faux pas. After the table had been cleared, the waiters brought out the port and lots of ashtrays. I was just about to light up, when someone announced that we could smoke after the Queen had been toasted. Being a republican, I just smiled as they pledged their allegiance, then happily lit up my fag.:) |
Re: Met any famous people?
I found that quite awsome, Garinda
When I was a building manager at Melbourne House, I arranged for a lunch buffet in the staff common room for Anne Widdicombe. Boy!! that woman loves her nosh! She sat with her legs apart scoffing like there was no tomorrow! (I had laid on smoked salmon and other delicacies). She then had a tour of the building and made nice comments about the plant displays (all my own work). Even though she appeared 'ungainly' I quite liked the woman - no nonsense frills attached - liked her (even though she is tory and eats like a pig at a trough) PS she was very amused to learn that I knew our (then) MP when he was in short pants. |
