Corner shops also have their uses in the community - if they know someone who goes in there every day for milk or bread etc and they dont see them for a day or two then if they are part of the community they might ask someone if theyd seen such abody because they havent been in for a day or two or go and knock on their door.

Our post office is the same. My daughter went in there the other day and as they haven't seen me for a while the chap behind the counter asked her if I was OK.

Whilst individual items may be slightly dearer by the time you add up the petrol/time and also the fact that in the supermarkets you tend to pick up stuff you didn't go in for(heh, How many times do you hear I only came in for a loaf and spent £20) Its 'cheaper' to go to the corner shop and buy just what you were short of.

That is a good point and so true. I use the corner shop/grocer when I need to but sadley I do more often than not hit the local supermarket. There is that friendly personal touch at the local corner shop that you can never match at Asda Tesco Morrisons Sainsbury's etc. Maybe it could be seen as a damning inditement of what we have become ie slaves to big stores.
