Gardening - love it or hate it

..... i hate it:( :( :( :(

Most people have had a snide go at me not cutting the grass, so i have wayhey well front & side have, the back errrrr needs bombing 1st before i will think about it. Would of been handier with a grass box least then i could get the strays cut & not get stung by darn nettle clippings flying to attack me  & my strimmer has knackered being in shed, so edges arn't neat either - gee took a lot of motivation just to get the mower out, least that didnt blow up in flames this time heehehehe:rolleyes:

Btw i haven't tackled my bush as its famous for its big bushy outgrown look :D [besides wouldnt make much of a difference!!]

Some people enjoy gardening, to me its just more aggro i have enough with the house itself but the advantage to a nice garden [which i aint got atm lol] is being able to sit out in the lovely weather - looking pretty. My grandparents were good keen gardeners on both sides, but me growing up in a 2 up 2 down with a yard never having the pleasures & pains of a garden. So is it nuture [taught] or nature [genetic in the blood]???

So what did the council do.................give me a ruddy big garden that was never looked after in the 1st place & expect me to work miracles  :(

I built a split level garden in the back yard of a terraced house. What a waste of money that was! . I could sit out on my lounge chair and look at the flowering shrubs. I could pretend that the traffic noise was the sound of waves on the shore, but when the dogs next door peed there was no escaping the smell ,even though I had the wall topped with lavender in troughs.
Now HH mows my grass front and back -life is easier that way -but I miss having breakfast in the sun in my nightie. I am surrounded by single men in this flat and it just isnt appropriate to appear on HH's lawns in my nightie. :D
(By the way Mel I get a joiner tomorrow to finish the central heating install )

I dont mind doing a bit of gardening, mines quite low maintenance just the lawn and a bit of weeding, love sitting out in nice weather so its worth the work.

I love gardening, it's my hobby. Is it Nature or Nurture? Well, my dad was a keen gardener so I grew up being used to weeding and cultivating. I love a beautiful lawn but I don't like mowing so about 10 years ago I "excavated" my back garden and paved and gravelled it, leaving just borders and dozens of pots. When my daughter and granddaughter came to live with me I thought Laura needed somewhere a bit more comfortable to play so I re-lawned half of it.

I get a kick out of growing plants, especially from seed, and I like to be able to look at and sit in an attractive garden but I enjoy the hard work too, digging etc. I still don't like mowing the lawn but at least there's not much of it to mow.

Re: Gardening - love it or hate it

I used to like a bit of gardening but my tired old body cannot do any these days. I wasn’t very knowledgeable about it save for the basics. But I could read and understand what was written on seed/bulb packets and in books so my previous gardens were OK if not spectacular. I was able to grow some very nice radishes and lettuce but was a complete failure with carrots.

My current garden was until recently a wilderness of grass and the odd wild flower. My landlord (Twin Valley Homes) was constantly bleating about its wilderness and just wouldn’t accept that I was growing various varieties of grass. No sense of humour some people.

So a couple of weeks ago I hired one of them rotavator things and my 25 years old grandson spent an afternoon churning everything up until it looked like a ploughed field. A quick rake over, by him, made it more or less levelish and I sowed a few packets of meadow flowers and a patch for some poppies. The poppies, if they come up, will form a large V shape in the middle. V for victory of our forces in two world wars and a subtle gesture to my landlord but it will go over his head.

Beware when hiring petrol engine powered gardening tools from Smiths on King Street, Blackburn. I couldn’t hire it for just the Saturday at £27.50 plus vat, it had to be for the whole weekend but they did knock off 20%. It was delivered on the Friday late afternoon with a full tank of petrol and was due to be collected on the Monday. Charge of £4 each way.

Monday afternoon came and went and no collection. I rang them. Sorry we forgot was the reply. We’ll collect tomorrow afternoon. Yup! You’ve guessed it. I rang them at about 4:30pm on the Tuesday. The van is in Lower Darwen, he’ll be with you very soon. He never arrived.

Wednesday. I still have your rotavator and if you don’t collect it today I’m charging you £20 a day storage. By the way why have you charged me £4.50 for 5 litres of petrol when the tank only holds one litre? That’s fraud. Eventually I was offered a refund of delivery charges and the £4.50.

I’m returning the machine with a full tank and when the driver calls make sure that he has all the money with him. If he hasn’t he doesn’t take the machine away.

They eventually arrive on mid Thursday morning with the money in an envelope and took away the machine.

And now I want some rain and look forward to a garden of meadow flowers and poppies in a month or two.

Officially I haven't got a garden - well that's according to HBC. I can't possibly produce garden waste they tell me because I have no garden. OK I grant you it's not big enough for a lawn and sitting out dining al fresco but it does have some plants and the odd tree (one very odd tree). I'm currently cultivating a nice crop of dandelions and one ferocious nettle. I suppose I'll have to get out there with the weedkiller now the Totem Pole is finished ;)

Hehehehehehehe Willow u finished it, hope your daughter was pleased with it ??:D

I killed off a lawn full & a half of dandelions apart from the edges - wonder how long they will grow back

My gardens are too big back front and side. I got a little border in front of the house with too big grass bits and the back is 99% grass the rest is what ive dug out to put some bushes in. By the way im cultivating dandelions, some big green leaves and daisies in mine. That is until i mow it - which should be soon because my neighbours have all theirs cut down nice and neat. My lawn mower is one of them that puts stripes in it and it does have a grass box so mel if you want stripes in your garden you can borrow mine!!!

Photos of the border, back garden and part of the front garden.

I love messing about in gardens. Though I guess I'm a bit weird, as I used to save up my pocket money as a child to send off for rare seeds and plants.

I think it's nice Mel's taking an interest in her lady garden.:D

The best way to kill off dandelions is to cut the main stem just below ground level and if it manages to grow again, cut it again. It shouldn’t come back a third time.

On the other hand why kill off a flower? Let it flower - it adds colour to a garden and the insects enjoy flowers.

panther 03-05-2007 13:25

Re: Gardening - love it or hate it

....and all the things that fly off it will land on ya garden and produce more dandelions, so really theres no way of avoiding em....and erm picking em will make you wee the bed!!:D
