I seriously think the age limit of driving should be raised to 21. We all at the age of 18 think nothing will happen to us, and they think they are invincible :(

I think by the time you get to 21 life has taught you that little bit more and sensibility kicks in.

Yes I agree .... if you are aware that the driver has been drinking then yes they are just as much to blame and YES you get done for aiding and abetting ....... not very much when you have killed someone is it :(

It isn't justice if you killed someone, talk about getting off lightly. I struggle to understand how anyone of any age can be stupid enough to drink and drive, I also know that its not always the young ones that do it.

Oh yes I know that it isn't ALWAYS the young ones that drink and drive.....I think the statistics on that one would be 50/50.

But I do think the older you get the more common sense you get on the road. I know at 18 years old I would have been impressionable had my mates been in a car with me and that I would have been more inclined to SHOW OFF. But I think at 21 your more inclined to have some sense that showing off in front of your mates isn't as important as safety.

katex 12-05-2007 12:45

Re: whalley road closed off

There is a quite a difference between 18 and 21 granted Slinky, not inclined to hang around with a 'bunch' anymore, just a few selected friends, possibly a regular girl-friend, and more in a position to afford the insurance and respect the money you are earning. There would still be quite a high risk I think from 21 > 24 as still have to gain experience of anticipation, etc., and this factor causes quite a lot of the road accidents.

Also, could put the British Army in a very difficult position, need our soldiers to be able to drive I would think. ?

Hope all's well with those involved in this crash, and turns out to be just a hard lesson learned, but punishment will have to be levied on the driver obviously if proved was over the limit or driving too fast. Very sad for the parents here too.

I really don't think this is true.
It's just a massive generalisation of teenage drivers, of which the majority are very safe.
Of course there's idiotic drivers, but age has nothing to do with it - there's idiots in every age bracket.

very true shaker, but statistically younger males 17-24 are at a higher risk of being in an accident... saying that sometimes I think its more to do with when you pass your test too and it could be that most young males pass their test at the younger age.

We know someone who passed their test lot later and is just as bad

if that was the case the insurance premiums dont agree with it shaker, sure theres idiots in every age bracket, just a damn sight MORE of em the younger the bracket.

shakermaker 12-05-2007 14:30

Re: whalley road closed off

Ok, fair enough, but what I really mean is what would raising the age limit do?
It's always going to be the lowest end of the bracket most at risk of being involved in accidents, so surely it's down to the people making the tests to make sure people get more road practise instead of just learning what road signs mean!

cashman 12-05-2007 15:09

Re: whalley road closed off

not in favour really of raising the age limit, take the view if yer old enough to fight n vote for yer country then you can sure as hell drive. think the answer more likely lies in the severity of sentance if caught - but theres more chance of hell freezing over than that happening.;)

Oh that's awful. :( That driver will have his friend's death on his conscience for the rest of his life. It's his poor parents I feel sorry for now. They must be devastated.

Raising the age limit for drivers wouldn't necessarily solve things. A lot is down to experience too. If someone learns to drive at 18 by 21 they have 3 years experience but if they learn at 21 then they won't have that experience until they are 24.

Beg to differ, they actually do get u to do a lot more than that - even be psychic in some cases [aka reading other drivers minds] its not that easy to pass your test, well my case not, & now they have included hazard perception tests [which are harder than it seems], road signs are the easiest bit LOL!

The hardest thing u do is pass your test then it goes down hill from then on because lazy habits creep in.

Got to be hard on the parents , I don't know how you get through to young uns about stuff like this, at that age you think your going to live forever.
Maybe putting the wrecked cars up on display at the center of round-a bouts as some sort of example ?, no clean-up, the cars in exactly the same state as it was after the accident, though I'm not sure that would work , how many times have we as adults/grown-ups seen pictures of smokers lungs and yet we still smoke.

She's in a situation that no mother would want to be in and everyone can empathise with that, most teenagers will do something daft at one time or another and most get away with it unhurt. I know the new ICU at RBH is state of the art and the staff on there do a good job, glad she's also being taken care of.

Yeh, thanks for that Margaret.

Good to have news of this young lad. Even though we all criticise the media at times, albeit newspaper, radio, t.v. and Accyweb ... good to know that people follow these distressing events with interest, helpfulness, understanding and sympathy, and, give in turn, comfort to the family who come to realise that people do really care.
