North versus South
Why is it that if you meet anyone who lives in the South, they always assume that Lancashire is full of mills and cobbled streets. They are so surprised to see the beautiful country that surrounds our towns.
I think that has something to do with folk down south watching coronation street. They see one cobbled street and imagine them all to look like that.
I myself cant wait to have a trip to London, as i believe all the streets are paved with gold.lol |
It was like that at one time though
Mick, the countryside has always been there even when the mills were working or are you referring to the streets of London being paved with gold
i wish Accrington was paved with gold not what it is paved with
As regards cobbled streets, there are more of 'em where I live in the East End than there are back in Accy....in fact, if I had my way I'd rip up all the tarmac and re-institute cobbles (in Church, the cobbles are still under the tarmac anyway)....a cobbled street looks far nicer then a tarmac one and also serves to deter these speed nuts who want to whizz around at more than 20m.p.h. in residential areas.
yea/ some one with some sence , there was nowt like the cobbled streets , didnt cost as much to maintain either, used to love sitting on kerb picking gas tar out mmm giving me age away again
It's funny - there's a well known east end street not a few hundred yards from where I am now where the council have ripped up the tarmac & put down new cobbles...there are no kerbing stones - the pavement is on the same level & traffic proceeds at a civilised pace. It looks good.
There are so many streets in Accy that could benefit from similar treatment, but given the current state of Hyndburn Council finances I doubt if this could happen for a long time. Whatever happened to all this "Special Status" Euromoney that was supposed to be coming into the town? Is that still there & ringfenced or what? Anyone know whats going on with the council & it's dosh? (our money) |
:bigglasse My family live in Leicester, and my cousins used to come to Accy for weekends when we were all in our early 20's. Whenever they brought their friends, they would all be surprised about the lack of cobbled streets. One of them said he thought we were still without electricity up here and that everybody had allottments. Don't know what is happening with the Council at the moment Tealeaf. Had a newsletter through the door last week full of pathetic excuses as to where the 1.8 million has gone. Mmmmm, wonder how much their accountants are getting paid. More than me I bet!!!
The accountants probably nicked the money in the first place.
I heard HBC invested in Parmalat shares.....
hehe, this is all i have to offer on the matter :p

Re: North versus South
u cheeky thing! i actually find that northerners are alot softer than southerners....where i lived anyway.so there:p
Re: North versus South
Stevey Baby, are you trying to say that Southerners are loopy?
Re: North versus South
Well, something like that . . . :D
Re: North versus South
As a general rule, it is true to say there are far more puffters in the south than up north......mind you, Manchester is coming up fast behind
Re: North versus South
Since I come from Southend, I can talk as an "official" southener. I don't know anyone who thinks Lancashire is full of industry and has no countryside and I don't know one gay person where I live at all.
Still, that doesn't stop anyone from calling me a "Southern Softie" when I'm up North and a "Northern poofter" down South. There's no pleasing some people... |
Re: North versus South
"mind you, Manchester is coming up fast behind"
no pun intended huh? lol! |
Re: North versus South
We have steak and pepper pies. Down south they dont even have pie, peas and gravy. There must be more puffters down there.
Re: North versus South
they have Pie, Mash & Liquor in the East End....mind you, the pie's are rubbish. Hollands could make a fortune if they tried a bit down here.
Re: North versus South
There's more wealthy and posh people down South. They don't have time for pies.
Re: North versus South
You need to visit the East End, Super....there's alot of place that do pies
Re: North versus South
I come from just outside the East end. Mind you, where I come from is scruffy and sells lots of pies.
Re: North versus South
We can have curry, peas, gravy Etc with our chips up here.......Southerners can't ;)
Re: North versus South
Is mushy peas just a northern thing? To be honest I don't actually know.
Re: North versus South
Mushy peas just aren't right I'm afraid. Give me a garden pea any day!
Re: North versus South
I feel really sorry for southerners. No good pies. Shame.:bleedinhe
Re: North versus South
Sorry ShortStuff but Mushy for me and I like e'm really green, not natural but GGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDDDDD :)
Re: North versus South
I couldn't get mushy peas the last time I was in a chippy down south (Kent) It's happen as well really, as I was sharing the car with 3 friends and didn't really want to offend them on the way home. :D
Re: North versus South
Finding Mushy Peas in the South is like finding a Pork Pie in Pakistan....if you do manage to do it, you'll pay for it but you'll have to think twice before eating it. I would recomend instead a good potion of Jellied eel...lovely stuff...yummy yummy yummy
Re: North versus South
I had some homemade mushy peas recently and they look luminous and tasted like plastic. Just thought I'd like to warn people before they decided to make mushy peas themselves.
Its just not worth it |
Re: North versus South
Funny that....I recently lost some green polystyene padding balls....looked alot like mushy peas
Re: North versus South
You mustn't have made your mushy peas right. My ex mother in law makes them all the time and they're scrummy. My family had a chippy when I was a kid, and my mum made great mushy peas. Not your luminous green stuff, like the tinned variety, but proper pale green musical bottom fodder....
Re: North versus South
You gotta soak them first, don't forget
Re: North versus South
Soak em overnight, with bicarb in the water...;)
Re: North versus South
SuperAccy probably soaked the plastic bag as well, hence the taste
Re: North versus South
It wasn't me that mad em, dont blame me for the luminous, plastic-smelling peas. They didn't smell very nice either...
Re: North versus South
You southerners are so easy to please.
