Blackpool beach, pay as you use areas

came across this news story
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...re/6670231.stm

seems Blackpool council have decided to go European and are running a trial where you have to pay to use the sands/beach in certain areas, much like resorts around the 'med'
Couple of things come to mind , common law (Magna Carta etc.) says that all tidal areas between low tide and high tide are public lands how will they manage to keep 'interlopers' out , since the tide comes all the way up to the Promanade does this not mean all the beach is public land , also I thought Nu-Labour had introduced introduced new about 'right to roam' allowing access to all coastal areas even if it meant crossing private land .

any comments

Maybe they are getting round it by providing deck chairs etc, doesn't sound bad to me if its dog free though doesn't say how much you have to pay.

There's no way that i would pay to sit on Blackpool beach. I wouldn't even sit on the part that you don't have to pay for.

I always thought that all land between low and high tide was crown property and as such no one can charge for access to it.

However it would appear that people are not being charged to go onto the beach but are being charged for the use of a deckchair, sun lounger etc in an area reserved for them.

It would appear from http://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/our_portfolio.htm that the crown marine estate includes more than 55% of the foreshore, tidal river beds and almost all of the sea bed within the 12 nautical miles limit.

I certainly wouldn't pay to spend time on Blackpool beach...I think they are getting ideas above their station.

Why pay to sit on the beach to watch the kite show when you can sit or stand on the prom and watch for free? :D

I've only been to Blackpool once, and that was to go to the theatre.

Is there actual sand there on the beach, or is it just a century's worth of sewage they've pumped into the Irish Sea, washed back in?

Good luck to them, if they can get anybody to pay to sit on it.:D

Took my Daughter last year on a lovely sunny day and the beach was lovely, clean and litter free, my only comment would be the amount of dogs, but they have to go somewhere dont they, maybe if their owners were more responsible I wouldn't find them a problem. I dont think its just the beach they should be cleaning up though, some of the tacky shops with inflatable ladies outside could do with sorting to make it a bit more family friendly.

Last time I went to Blackpool I couldn't get on the beach for strangly clad people wading out fully clothed, queer place that Blackpool. We went in a bar and someone chucked an handbag at us no not normal that place, better off going to Blackpool with GCE -s, Southport a lot cleaner and more civilised.:D
