Age Restristions Goin' Up

I can't decide whether it's a good idea to raise the age limit for drinking to 21....I mean, I'll have to wait 2/3 years to get into my local town clubs I've veen going to for months, and so will a lot of people....doesn't seem right some how... I suppose it will reduce the risk of fights and what have ya...but how about the teens like me just wanting a good night out... just wondered what ya'll think about it...

Can't see any real benifits to raising the age limit...maybe it would limt younger people drinking in pubs but it would mean more boozing on the streets, at least in the pubs/clubs ther can be some sort of controls, on the streets there are none and things can get really out of hand.

I would take that one step further. If you are old enough to hold down a full time job then you are old enough to enjoy a pint.

Where is Tealeaf to declare that raising the legal drinking age to 21 is a crackpot idea?

Although if he made that declaration I would agree with him totally.

would make things a lot worse on the streets

As people are legally classed as adult at 18 then surely they should be free to make their own mind up whether or not to consume alcohol at that age?

Re: Age Restristions Goin' Up

At age 18 you can legally fight for your country, vote in Elections, marry without parental consent (can have been married for 2 years if your dad agreed), have smoked for 2 years (if you can find anywhere to light up), see Adult films at the cinema and many more "grown up" activities. To legislate against you buying a drink until you're 21 is, in light of the above, nonsense and typical of the wooly-brained ideas our Government dreams up.

I can, sort of, see where they're coming from but the way to crack down on binge drinking etc. is to educate the general public away from the present "alcohol for the sake of it" culture and into a more relaxed attitude to drinking.

As discussed previousy, yes is absolute nonsense .. has this cropped up again in Parliament Popinjay ? Can't you just see it on the night they decide no under 21's (bit like smokers and June 30th really).

Can just see John Cleese doing a sketch on this at 12 midnight. "Ok, over 21's stay where you are, over 18's form a line and march out through the pub door handing your glass to the bouncer as you exit" Life of Brian stuff .. :D Will never happen.

Dosnt matter what happens they will still get booze fags etc. Part of the thrill for them is they aint meant to do it.

Most current 18 year olds, myself included, have been drinking since 15.

Age limits don't mean a thing.

Nowt wrong with a late starter. Some are drinking regularly up here pre teen so Shaker is setting a half good example.

I don't think it makes any difference what age limits you set, kid's are influenced by their peers, I only know one thing I wish I personaly had never tasted the damn stuf it has played a large part in wrecking my life, and no doubt will shorten my life expectancy. It is the biggest curse facing mankind today, never mind global warming. In my humble opinion.

It all seems so arbitrary ... the choosing of a certain age at which drinking is legal ... so all the mature, responsible 18 yr olds are denied the privilege of drinking leagally, because of the a**holes. Responsible teens can't drink, while idiot 40 yr olds can get plastered and obnoxious every night. It don't make sense. I will go have another beer and consider the problem.
