Train Cost

I'm going to Prime Ministers Questions on the 20th June, week before Blair stands down!

I'm stupid and left it till now to book train tickets. I need to be there by 12:30 and the cheapest I can come up with on virgin website is £62.90 there and £62.90 back for two people. This is quite expensive still.. is there any way to get it cheaper? I'll be going anyway so will have to fork it out if I can't get it cheaper.. but was wondering if anybody knew anything about trains that I didn't.

Ps. Whats semi-flexible because thats what those tickets are.

Have you got a young persons railcard ? If so then according to trainline saver return is £42.20 return

I don't have one no. If im getting two tickets must I have a young persons railcard for both tickets? I assume so?

Where do I go to book this £42.20 thing? because I can get a rail card, which would make it £62.20 again but it means I can save on future train journeys dosn't it. :)

Yep, railcard for individual person only. You should be able to get it from Accy station, I got my family railcard from there. As a general rule if you make more than 1 train journey a year a railcard will pay for itself.

Don't know how much the bus is to Manchester but on the day you want to go to London you can still pick up a single ticket for £12.85 each way ( with railcard :) ) from Manchester Piccadily

hey thats cheap, leaving it this late, we booked a month in advance, couple of years ago £20 return, to euston, but tried to book Norwich last year n cheapest quote was £240 return,so we drove lol

Re: Train Cost

The funny thing about this is that it's probably a reverse logic journey. Most people travel by train, have a kip on the way and feel relaxed when they get there. This one will probably be a case of staying awake on the train so you can have a sleep when you get there :rofl38:

Re: Train Cost

Cyfr,
Megabus are doing 2 seats for £10 each way Manchester to London

megabus.com - low cost intercity travel in the UK

IIRC the first bus from accy is ~6:30 so you might need to get a lift into M/c (speak nicely to your friendly local techie and I could drop you off, You can make your own way home though :D

That should give you return journey for ~£13 each

Don't go moaning about expensive rail fares, it's your beloved Tory party that made it that way! :p:D

If you are going awat to University in September, you'll definitely need a Young Peson's Rail Card.

When I reached 24, and was no longer eligible, I started getting the coach up from London, but soon changed back to the train because of the ease.

Was that as a bachelor or a railcard holder ?

When I took the train up a few weeks ago it was 12.50 quid one way. It made it up to Manchester Picadilly in just over two hours. But that was during the week.

I find the singles are cheaper, preston is sometimes cheaper than piccadilly. I need to get to London sometime this month and I cant find any cheap fares for a family of four. a Mate of mine flew to heathrow, £36 each way with bmi. Another option is VLM airways (- VLM Airlines) who fly from manchester to london city airport, they can be quite cheap as well!

Re: Train Cost

Considering the distance and the short notice for a ticket it is a good price. People may knock the prices but I have used trains back and forward between Falkirk and Accrington for nearly 17 years. My ticket cost was £22 when I first cme up here yet the price is £26 for a round trip. So all in all it isnt too bad the costings. Alls it needs is a little planning and and no fixed travel times ie between 9-6 and they are as cheap as you can get.

My sister is over from Australia, and her husband has been commuting between Berkshire and Lancashire, and has found it far cheaper, and convenient flying, he has flown from Suthampton and Heathrow, with a company called Flybee a Manchester outfit I think, the only problem is the trip from Manchester Airport. We still seem to be in the dark ages regarding a good link from there.

I once flew up. The train to, and from the airport, was longer than the flight, and more time consuming than getting the train up from Euston....and it meant longer without a cigarete.:D
