This Fizz character..... hmmmm.... perhaps they need to attract some big name celebrity in order to put new life into the event. Someone say like..... Wurzel or Emu. ;)

Unfortunately Worzel can't come back because Jon Pertwee is alas deceased. The year he came we also had that fantastic motorbike acrobatic team. They were brilliant.

Emu also hasn't been feeling himself much lately, since Rod Hull passed away.

Re: was the carnival a success?

It was not the best carnival Accrington has ever seen but I don't think it should be scrapped there is always the next one. TM I don't watch Corrie so I had never heard of Fizz but at least she showed some interest unlike those hiding from the rain in their cars.

I didnt go up to the carnival field i went home afterwards. So dont know what it was like up there. But seeing everyone getting ready and there was a fair few in the parade i would say they should carry on with it. Wonder if Rossendales will be as good next weekend?

Just to clarify, my comment was very much tongue in cheek.

I enjoyed it, I think its one of those nice throwbacks to times where events like this were major parts of a towns being. It would be a shame to lose them

As I posted in the other threads, it was a shame that our local 'celebs' all hid from the bit of rain whilst Fizz was there roof down having a laugh and generally taking a full and active part.

There was a carnival on?!

Re: was the carnival a success?

They assembled near the Globe Centre and went down into town, up Blackburn Rd, up Whalley Rd, along Queens Rd, along Thorneyholme Rd and then disbanded.

Can't vote as I wasn't there but, I'd vote to keep it based on passed experiences. I think it's great for the town and great for all the schools that take part.

Re: was the carnival a success?

i didn,t think it was the best one we have ever had and i defenitly don,t think it should be scrapped though. My daughter loved it!! i just thought there was quite alot of supposed to be importent people in black cars and the best thing were they didn,t even wave to my 2yr old ,they just kept looking straight on w*****s. Get rid of the black cars and have more floats we want fun not toffee nosed gits!

Re: was the carnival a success?

I didn't go, mainly cause I'm a softy and don't like the rain.

Had a really good look at Kipax's photos though, which helps you feel like you have been there and sortof caught the atmosphere.

Of course it shouldn't be scrapped, it's wonderful and lovely to see all those people watching. Presume was a financial success. Thought the same about 'Fiz' .. every photo she was smiling and looked really bonny; her obligation anyway to show herself as presume was getting paid for it, and she did.

Just thought the theme was a little dull though ..summat to do with Services to the Community ?? (don't think anyone knew this, certainly my colleagues at work didn't) much better when it is themes like Fairy Tales, Famous Books, Space Age, that type of thing, etc. More scope for imagination, colour and costume.

Re: was the carnival a success?

I think that the dignitaries should be made to take part and decorate their own float and make costumes etc (out of their own money not public purse).

Local companies should be pressured by their employees to take part. Many of the bigger companies who claim to be proud to be from Accrington were not present and to my knowledge never have been. Accrington Stanley are always represented by their supporters but never have their own. Accrinton Cricket Club have never been present and are really struggling for funding and awareness at the moment. None of the local schools bar one (I think a Primary School from Huncoat had any presence. Until organisations like these start to show an interest then how can they expect the town to show up enmasse?

I remember standing on Plantation St 20 yearsr ago when the likes of Rod Hull or Jon Pertwee were on the floats. The pavements even up there used to be five or six deep such was the interest from the community. I know times are different and there was bad weather on saturday, but it would be nice to think that these occasions could still be well supported.

Re: was the carnival a success?

yes i must admit i was suprised at the lack support from local institutions... ie an official STANLEY float, cricket..etc, my daughter was on the huncoat primary school float( looking fantastic obviously!) and they won second prize for they`re effort ,very suprised more schools were`nt involved as the kids love that type of thing, roll on next time....lets make it bigger and better.:D:D

Macca, I agree that the local companies should be persuaded to take part: I know the cricket club haven't done this for years if ever, but it's a little unfair to single us out when we are in a state of disarray at the moment; I didn't see floats from any other cricket clubs in the borough either.

I wasn't particularly singling out the cricket club as I also mentioned Stanley, but the fact that you are in disarray at the moment is precisely why you should have been there. Not mentioning the other clubs was ignorance on my behalf not being a cricket follower. I thought Enfield cricket club was just a function room :p

The cost of taking part is negligible compared to the feelgood of the participants and thepotential goodwill that comes from the procession and a bloody big advert through town.

There was also an absence of churches, Scout troops and Brownies etc - all of which would have been on show years ago
