I'm curious Royboy, caravan?, we had no money and tv was in it's infacy, we did used to watch it at a friends who's dad worked in the trade, I think I would be about 10 years of age when it came on line, do you remember 'Relay Radio'?

No....Farm
Yes I do remember but we had a small portable radio which weighed a ton and the batteries cost a fortune.

My family lived at no 9 Scaitclife St in 1944 we had gas, no electric and a 'slop stone' sink with a cold tap, the 'wireless' we had was called a 'cumulator' mam used to get batteries charged up at local garage, they were 'wet' batteries containing sulphuric acid would not be allowed today I'm afraid.

I lived at Park Farm in Church from 1950.
All we had at that time was calor gas and lamp-oil.
My stepfather had to pay to have a trench dug across the field from Church Kirk bridge to the farm for the electric cables........this was in 1953.
Then we had television and a fridge for the first time.
We could milk the cows by machine instead of by hand.
Happy days?

I'll put the white flag up to that post Royboy we had it hard but not as hard as you, I bet you know what hard work was like from an early age, never mind the luxury of television. There are a few people I would like to take back in time for week, if they lived that long.;)

Re: Can you do without TV?

I almost do without it now because I am very selective in my viewing. But I wouldn’t like to do without it altogether. I could manage but I wouldn’t like it ‘cos I would miss the odd programme, like Dr Who, Panorama, Question Time, the wild life documentaries and the like, football when it is on and the rare occasion when an unseen film is put on.

For me 90% of the programmes on all the free view channels are either rubbish or repeats.

I remember Relay Radio Ianto.W. In fact I remember it that well because I worked for them before I joined the navy. I rewired much of Accrington and district so that subscribers could have Radio Luxembourg. I suppose that you would call it cable radio today.

Was that the early days of Rediffusion. I remember there used to be a switch box on the windowsill at my grandparents house which was for both tv and radio. I also remember them having a large building just off Barden Lane in Burnley

It was supplied by a local company called Relay Radio, it consisted of two channels at first medium wave and long wave, if you paid a bit more you could get radio Luxembourg but that came later. It was a simple idea that consisted of a 'master' radio and wires going from house to house that were connected to speakers with a knob on them that had three positions. Collectors came round each week to collect the money, the bloke who thought it up made a fortune. I think it went on to be called Relay Vision after, renting out tv's but I could be wrong.

It sounds like what I was on about with Rediffusion but now I'm not sure i it was Relayvision. :) . Seems to be the thing I was talking about though.

You beat me to the punch there jambutty, yes I had a good idea they had to put an extra wire in for radio Luxembourg, but i'll tell you what we had hours of pleasure from that little box in the corner of the window.:D.
