Has someone proposed to someone with one? I haven't seen anyone do THAT for ages.

I also had the idea of a really melodramatic suicide note but that isnt really the ideal part of the bridge for a suicide, I would've thought the big bridge would be better for that if you were going to go to lengths of writing your suicide note really large on a banner.

Speaking of suicides, I'm going to Lancaster in just over a week, highest suicide rate in the country I believe thanks to Lancaster tower.

Re: has anybody seen?

That's the MAYOR???? :D

Actually I saw something going on at the Town Hall when I came back from Blackburn on the bus a little while ago and some of the streets had been closed off (Dutton St and Church St)

This may be a dumb question but where's Lancaster Tower? I go every year but I didn't know it had a tower.

A soft elephant the same size as a young girl. Well I wouldn't have expected that.

Im intrigued, but ill so not going to go down and look, more details please!

I didn't know our mayor was an elephant but that may explain why PB's photo went in that publication in his place. ;)

I can only think of the John O'Gaunt Tower part of the castle but people can't get up that to fling themselves off as it's part of the prison. There's a bit of a wall round one side of the castle that you could jump off I suppose if you felt that way inclined but I'm not sure it's high enough to commit suicide from, probably get a broken leg or something. I'm really puzzled now.

WillowTheWhisp 30-06-2007 11:45

Re: has anybody seen?

Oooer, just seen the banner. If there was a sort of mayor signing in thing going on that would explain police and closed off streets if they think there might be a spot of bother.

I couldn't really point you to any sources because I've only been told over and over again by other people. I know I wont be jumping off anything so I dont really need to know everything anyway. I haven't looked for info on lancasters tourist attractions.... i will have to look so I dont ruin the thread lol by asking u questions willow.

Re: has anybody seen?

Oh don't worry Blazey, we're good at thread wandering. We usually get back on topic eventually.

I wonder if there has been any bother in town or if this was just a lone protestor making a statement about our Cllr. Dobson.

I didn't stay down there very long and I had been to Blackburn earlier in the morning so if there was any hoohah then I missed it.

(P.S. - just found out there is a Lancaster Tower at Windsor Castle. That's a bit like Leeds Castle being in Kent isn't it?)

I dont know but its lancaster as a town that has the suicide rate...

Re: has anybody seen?

That's two good reasons I have now to be glad we didn't move there then - the other was the recent flood warnings which are far worse than the Accy ones.

Anyway, does anybody know if there was any serious bother then or was this banner the sum total of the protest?

I've always found Mayor Dobson an absolute pleasure to converse with.

I've no idea what the banners claims of "corruption" are. I do wish people would express themselves a bit more when they claim such rubbish!

I know a couple of people who've been into town today, they didn't see any bother.Looks like this banner was the sum total of the protest.Who'd do an underhand, cowardly thing like that? I've never heard anything bad about the new Mayor before.

its still there. i think anybody who wants to remove will have to ask permission from network rail or they could get prosecuted for trespass:hititbana:hititbanaits getting like the old days everything is going full circle political protests whatever next:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Someone has taken a great risk to put that banner up,they'd have had to stand on the railway line wouldn't they? It won't be an easy task to get it down but I'm sure it will be removed asap. They won't want it left there long will they?

cmonstanley 30-06-2007 15:02

they might put one up a month explaining themselves.next month might say because .the month after such and such a thing itll be more intersting than the telegraph which is just pants at moment....

Is it not the nickname for the gaol willow? Relating to the suicides.

Lilly 30-06-2007 15:06

It's the same people who do things like this as the ones who leave unsigned karma on Accyweb, too cowardly to do it out in the open and put their name to it.Therefore it is not worth taking any notice of in my opinion.

Re: has anybody seen?

Lancaster Uni was alleged to have the highest student suicide rate some 20 years ago when I applied there! The tower is nowt interesting achitecturally or historically, it's just one of the blocks on campus.

Maybe getting confused between Lancaster and Blackpool? I think one of them has a tower.

Re: Anyone see?

Yea, saw that this morning on my way into town. Also saw the cafuffle the procession caused around the bus station. 2BR were broadcasting outside the town hall which obviously caused a crowd to gather round it - only trouble was because Church Street was closed off for the procession to congregate all the traffice was being diverted on Blackburn Road - it's a wonder there wasn't a serious accident with fold trying to dodge the buses.

We had a thread about the mayor some time ago. Try doing a search. I can't remember the title. Maybe someone else can. My memory is getting worse these days.

It was the Mayors Ball on at the town hall.
No idea what it was or what went on???

I saw a mate the afternoon and he was suited and booted so I asked him where he'd been all dressed up and he said The Mayors Ball at the town hall.

It was a civic celebration to officially mark councillor Tony Dobson and his wife as Mayor and Mayoress.

Well we know it wouldn't be written by the man it was rumoured the Conservatives were going to put forward as Mayor, as allegedly he wasn't literate in English.

Re: has anybody seen?

I was talking to a counsellor this evening who said there had been several such banners around the town. Maybe the one on the viaduct was the most difficult one to remove due to access problems.

I missed this post earlier. Thanks for the clarification Lindsay. How sad that University Students are driven to suicide wherever they are.:(

I was one of the last to know about it. I live in Peel so straight down Plantation St meant I avoided them. I then went to the Halifax for an appointment at 9am which left me running late for the Council meeting at 9.45am. Not sure when they went up.

The first thing I know is when Pam Barton (my deputy) headed in my direction outside the town hall to tell me she was there early and had phoned the police to have them removed. There was some discussion amongst everyone.

Trish and Tony ignored it all well, though PB referred unnecessarily to it in the chamber during speeches. There was a lot of shock. Like the members on here, everyone is reluctant to speculate why who, in deference to Tony and Trish.

If someone has a grievance they should come clean. All this does is promote speculation and in honesty, drag the mayorality and the Borough down somewhat.

There is some discord. Nearly all of it revolves around standards. None of that has anything to do with the banner protest.

It was,as you say,a pointless and cowardly act. What good has it done?Whilst you're here can I just say that the above was meant as a joke, with reference to the well known discord between parties but I realise you could have taken offence and thought that I was seriously accusing you. With hindsight,I shouldn't have said it and it's not funny so I apologise.:)
