Council makes huge savings

Friday's Observer page 3.
What can I say, those are some savings,£459,000

Our 'Leader' quoted as saying
"With the savings made, the books balanced and the bank balance returned to a healthy £1.3M the Council can look to build upon the successes alreay achieved"

Are the books balanced or cooked? looks good though, think of all the projects that could be completed with a budget like that eh :Banane01::Banane01:

Think we should ask our "Leader" that or Mr Jones ;)

We're a cynical bunch aren't we? We complain when the council's in debt and then when they're not we can't believe it's true and accuse them of cooking the books!:rolleyes:We should just be glad that they're not in debt now.

Agreed, it's better than being in the red.

It is also worth considering the cuts made to acheive this 'supposed' savings. Maybe our esteemed leader can itemised where the savings came from.

Re: Council makes huge savings

Yes I'm cynical enough to want to know how they acheived this too.

Re: Council makes huge savings

Can this information be made available to anyone who requests it? I don't know.If the cynical part of you really wants to know the breakdown of the savings maybe you could make enquiries with Scaitcliffe House.Would there be any point in doing this though?Would you believe the information you were given or would you still think you were being lied to?

What question could you possibly ask under the freedom of information act to identify where they haven't spent money?

From the Observer
'Over half the financial savings came from better use of resources and via partnership working.
Other savings stemmed from insurance and pension cost, where poor practice in the past had been eliminated, and from better management of the council's money.'

Do they not call it creative accounting :D

I thought HBC had a large debt from the days when Hyndburn BC was formed.
Has that debt been paid or lost from the books?

May be Mr Jones will watch for that
"It's an absolute disgrace. We might as well have spent this £591,000 trying to grow straight bananas for what we have got out of this website"

Where the savings from insrance costs because they used less reputable insurance companies or did they not insure at all.

Possible reduction in staff employed would reduce employers NI contributions and pension contributions. Must be a big reduction in staff employed to make that sort of difference.

Don't think you would need to ask questions to identify where money has'nt been spent, just look around !

There has been a very large reduction on staff, as all the staff from the housing departmetn and works departmetn were all transfered to Hyndburn Homes at the begiining of April 2006. But it would be creative accounting to include this reduction in any savings, as those payments should not have been included in any budget figures for 2006/2007 financial year. If you know that you are not to pay something out it can not be classed as a saving.

There you go, looks like that's what they have done.

Re: Council makes huge savings

I will have to remember this the next time I need to save some money ie dont pay for something so I can claim a saving. Creative accounting at its best and now there will be big fat bonuses for some because of these so called savings. Sadley though these bonuses will wipe out the savings and defeat the purpose.
