Re: Tintin book racist?
I can see where they are coming from. However I don't think it should be banned, just viewed from a historical perspective, and understand that it was written when Belgium was an imperial power, and that happily we've moved on.
Most of Shakespeare would be banned too, if we were to be totally politically correct. Tintin in the Congo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://www.lomag-man.org/actu%20news...nCongo_big.jpg |

Most of Shakespeare would be banned too, if we were to be totally politically correct./quote] That would be ablessig but most of the PC Brigade will turn a blind eye to this having had a classical education. Then there are TV programs like dads army etc will they ban them? They ban things so as not to upset minorities but what about the minorities that have lived all their lives with the stuff being banned. I say bring back Golly. :D Had one ase a kid. :D |

Re: Tintin book racist?
I don't think it should be banned. I think it's good to have a historical perspective on things and see how people and attitudes have changed. It should be seen in context of when it was written, just as Shakespeare is seen in the context of when it was written.
As for Alf Garnett and his ilk. I've said it before but I don't mind repreating myself. To me the humour doesn't come from laughing WITH the bigot at the people he belittles, but at laughing AT him for his narrow minded ludicrous perception of reality. |

By the way when you were a child and watched Tom and Jerry did it ever persuade you to pick up an axe and slice a cat into pieces? I'm sure your answer is the same as mine, which is no, because you knew it was just an animation, but the P.C. brigade won't allow your children to watch such horrors in case they are influenced! Dang me but ain't they stupid? :D |

Re: Tintin book racist?
Of course the question is just who is it that is actually offended by such things as the golliwog and tin-tin?
This puts me in mind of the debate we had some time ago on the subject of Britain apologising for its part in the American slave trade. Funny, I don't see representatives from North Africa standing up and offering to apologise to Great Britain and Spain for the Slave Raids of the sixteenth century - must be something only us whiteys are expected to do. But then that is the trouble with holier-than-thou attitudes - they don't usually stand up to much scrutiny. |

I always thought that political correctness on any issue (racism, sexism, homophobia), if taken to extremes tends to trivialise the real issues. The problems are real, deal with the problems and the nitpicking about language and images will go away, quietly, on its own. It is much more important, for example, to deal with the issue that women are still making less money than men in the same occpation than it is to campaign for the renaming of manhole covers (personhole!!!!), or to tell kids of the person in the moon, or warn them of the boogeyperson. |
Re: Tintin book racist?
I have always enjoyed reading Tin, Tin, the author got accused of being unpatriotic during the war because he was forced to work for a pro-Nazi paper during the second world war, but if you read what he actually says, he got away with all sorts, because they were too stupid to see what he was saying.
Yes compared with today it isn't something we can be comfortable with, (we've learned a bit since then). He worked in his period, no matter what, Tin, Tin was always on the side of the good just like the 'Lone Ranger', or 'Superman', let's face it, they are part of an ancient idea which most of us seem to have forgotten. (For example, opening a door and allowing a Woman through first, try it today and you're called a sexist Bast*rd or some form of pervert, Don't do it and you're an ignorant sod). P.C. has gone too far, let's have the image that women want us to molley-coddle them, and put them back in skirts so that we can enjoy the difference, otherwise life will continue to be confusing for everybody. :) |
Re: Tintin book racist?
I think it is time we started a movement to ban the 'Politicaly Correct Brigade', Whoever they mighn't be, yes just who are these cretins?

Re: Tintin book racist?
I feel that there are some good points made in this thread and by constantly trying to eradicate any reference to black people and the past, we are in danger of erasing the positives along with the negatives. For example, Al Jolson was an actor who appeared in the 'first' synchronised sound film.

Re: Tintin book racist?
Surely this is about what people find offensive and how it affects them.
As I understand it Herge himself was rewriting his books up to his death changing items he felt were wrong now. No we shouldn't ban books as that makes us no better than the nazis who burned them. However these should be (as others have said previously) set down as how things were seen in the past. For historical changes just read Conan-Doyle or Agatha Christie. The views of the upper class at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th were repulsive to say the least. AS regards my thoughts on Mugabe, he is a murderous brute who should be made to suffer the fate he is putting his own nation through as do all the leaders of ZANU PF. |

Sammy Davis Jnr was Jewish and black (Jewish by conversion). Al Jolson was a "Black and White Minstrel". His real name was Asa Yoelson. |

Hehehe.... ;)
Did anyone see that episode of Love Thy Neighbour, where Eddie thought Al Jolson was black? :D |

Actually, if anyone's interested in the 80th Anniversary of the Jazz Singer and in knowing more about the silent-to-sound transition in Hollywood, there's a cracking set coming to DVD in October. You'll need a multi-region player, but I would think most people have those now.
DVD Times - The Jazz Singer 80th Anniversary Edition (R1) in October Won't interest many I wouldn't think, but it's got me drooling. :) |

I wonder if the same fuss would have ensued if Tin Tins dog had been black instead of white?

Re: Tintin book racist?
ok ,(a thread wander) I could never get the TinTin thing , I'm an Asterix type , but .....no matter what , to walk into someones home and find books available for perusal is a wonderous thing , the number of times I have been invited into someones home and the only printed thing laying about is the TV guide saddens me , don't people read anymore , I'm amazed at the number of people , especially those with youngsters at home who dont have a bookcase of some sort in the living area, and the scary thing is ......it's the more successful types (the ones with money) who have either the fewest or no books laying around .
ok rant over , I was in bed and my mind was turning his thread/theme over , got up , re-booted my PC and decided to share my thoughts ......... and so .. back to bed   ;) |
Re: Tintin book racist?
You want houses with bookcases? :D You should see this place! We've got books coming out of the walls. In fact we've got more books than shelves to put them on. We all read....... a lot.
