Grumpy Old Men
People are getting paid to publish this rubbish.
Trust the Americans........You have got to have a simple streak to understand American humour anyway. BBC NEWS | Health | Grumpy old people 'can't help it' |
Re: Grumpy Old Men
Well it has at least reassured me that I'm not senile yet. I was beginning to wonder this morning. :D

Re: Grumpy Old Men
I HAVE NO PLANS TO LOSE MY SENSE OF HUMOR!!!!!
Without my humour I wouldnt be who I am so if I should lose it I hope an effort will be made to find it. ;) There is a lack of humour in some older gentlemen and that might be down to the fact that over the years humour has change so people might not understand it anyway. What is humourous to 1 individual may not be to another so this study might be flawed and have nowt to do with congnitive deficiences. |
Re: Grumpy Old Men
I have a friend in her 80s and she has a brilliant sense of humour. She is also very active and very intelligent. I think I probably need to work at keeping my brain alive.

Re: Grumpy Old Men
We see enough Grumpy Old Men type behaviour to know that it is not -
a sense of humour lost, but a sense of self importance gained ;) |

Re: Grumpy Old Men
I know my old man has become more grumpy and much less tolerant as the years have advanced....maybe it is because he has to live with me :)
I also think that people are so much more sensitive these days....so the things that you could make fun of and get away with, without some sensitive soul feeling 'singled' out and 'abused', have got a bit thin on the ground. I also have to admit that things on TV that are supposed to be funny leave me totally bemused. I know that younger people find things like Little Britain a great laugh....I find that kind of humour juvenile and a touch lavatorial....so maybe my sense of humour has degraded too. I always have a good laugh when I am in the company of my mother......so much so that I find myself crying with laughing |

Well, I am already doing most of those things.....I wouldn't give him 2 puddings...his girth is wide enough....so i must need more practice eh?

Re: Grumpy Old Men

Re: Grumpy Old Men
The reason the younger generation think we are grumpy is, their sense of humour is infantile and not worth the effort needed laugh, we have earned the right to be 'grumpy' because we have heard it all before. Bernard Manning had it 'dead' right if you'll pardon the pun, his epitaph on tv last night was hilarious.;)

I think you could be right on both counts there Margaret. Maybe there's a generation gap thing when it comes to humour. Some of the things which older people find hilarious leave some younger folks looking perplexed. |

I can never concentrate on a stand up comedian .. my ex thought it was a lack of sense of humour ... no, just a lack of concentration I am afraid. Alway surprises me that my son/grandaughter and his mates can watch programmes like 'Friends' over and over again and still laugh uproariously at the same bits  They also see the funny side of black comedy like Pulp Fiction and the Sopranos .. yes, is funny, but had to be pointed out to me. Borat appears to be the new cult and he is much worse than Bernard Manning ... funny though ... :D |
Re: Grumpy Old Men
i think the elders among us have a wider
sense of humour mainly because we can laugh at ourselves and the youth dont know how to |

What really bugs me is those programs that have 'laugh' machines, to promt you to laugh, they get the 'deep six' (torpedoed) off yours truly, they are an insult to anyones intelligence.
|
Re: Grumpy Old Men
I tend to prefer the miserable ones - Jack Benny, Tony Hancock, Jack Dee.
I laugh with relief I suppose, at finding someone more miserable than me :D |
Re: Grumpy Old Men
I think the ability to laugh at yourself is essential for a happy life. :)
|
Re: Grumpy Old Men
Yes, me too. I overdose on laughter when I go away with Ma......in fact the last time we went away we had the whole of the dining room in uproarious laughter....and people were vying with one another to sit close to our table so that they did not miss out on the fun.
|
Re: Grumpy Old Men
Well seeing as everybody else laughs at me I have no choice but to join them :D

Eric, my hubby will eat anykind of pudding.......steak and kidney, cabinet, bread and butter, rice, apple betty pudding.....and I can make most of those myself...and usually do. But these days with his high blood pressure, and all the other things that tend to happen when we grow older disgracefully......I only tend to make them for very special occasions.
We have rellies coming over from Oz soon so I guess I will be making something for their delectation :) |
Re: Grumpy Old Men
but believe me he will only get a sniff of one of the puddings. :)

Re: Grumpy Old Men
I don't fancy Moose Steak.....I tried venison once and I didn't like it......Kangaroo too is horrible.....if it is going to be tender it has to be bleeding....if you cook it for anything more than a couple of minutes it is like eating goats cojones....no I'll stick with the beef variety thanks.

Re: Grumpy Old Men
Gayle, I like the old jokes....and I still find them funny.......maybe it is because inside I am only 16 :)

At what age does one qualify as a "Grumpy Old Man?" Do I have to wait until I'm 70ish or can 50/60 qualify?

Glad to oblige......'born old and grumpy'.
I was once looking round Blackburn market....and there was a stall holder who was being sorely stressed by a female customer....and you could see he was very nearly at the end of his patience.....when he said to the woman.....'eh aren't women queer?' I chipped up.....'well, what can you expect......God made 'em to match men'. That shut him up.:) |
