It is a fairly uninspired choice of three.

What about Nicaragua, Tibet, or the Solomon Islands being added to the list? All places I'd chose over living in Accrington. Or by 'Accrington' are we meant to understand it as Accrington and Districts?:D

Re: France - Spain or Accy

So, somebody says to me, "You gotta live in one of these 3 places."? Well, if I must, I'll go to France. I don't like Spain much and Accy's too cold and wet - it is in England after all.

Given free rein, I'd move to Malta. In fact, but for family commitments, I'd be living there now. The climate's lovely, the people are lovely, the food's lovely (the wine's a bit crap but you buy Italian), they have English as their 2nd language and they drive on the left. What more can you ask?

Seems a bit daft to compare a small town to two whole countries.

Would you rather live in a nice area of Accrington, a French inner city slum, or a Spanish prison, sharing a cell with a big bloke who calls you his 'bitch'?

i wouldnt live anywhere in this country (no choice though)or france or spain, sick of all the "you cant do this, you cant do that, oh no you shouldnt eat this or that, no smoking here, sorry £50 fine for throwing that" it gets on me nerves:mad: i want to move to canada, any offers to take me away:rolleyes:plzzzzzzzz:p:Banane44:;)

I think that when you go on holiday, you always think you would like to live in the place where you have had a good holiday........but living there is different.
I would love to move out of this country and become a permanent resident in Oz.......I wouldn't mind Perth or Adelaide or Brisbane....the climate in those places is, on the whole kind....and even when it isn't particularly warm, there are usually blue skies. (when I say particularly warm...I mean to the Aussies.....we walked about in an Oz winter in shorts and T shirts....they were in woolly jumpers and boots)

Accrington , i could never leave where id been brought up thats why its good to have holidays or holidays would get boring if i moved abroad because your already in holiday country however you wouldnt be living the holiday experience of going out and having tea every night!

I think I would still choose to live in Accrington, its where my family are, but I'd love a place in Majorca.

Re: France - Spain or Accy

I would love to live somewhere warmer and a bit dryer than here, but with the option of coming back now and again.

I agree with all the positive points about Malta but it's a bit small. Spain would be nice but I don't speak much Spanish.

I kinda like the idea of Tunisia. There are quite a few British ex-pats living there and most Tunisian people speak French and my French isn't too bad.

Re: France - Spain or Accy

If it is a choice among the three, I would choose Accy. Rain and all ... But I would always spend fall in Canada. But my homeland is so damn big that it would take more than one lifetime to see it all. Spain I don't like all that much, and if I want the French experience, la belle province is just a few clicks down the freeway. Vive le Quebec! (and the Montreal Canadiens).

Re: France - Spain or Accy

Having travelled the world courtesy of the “Grey Funnel Line” and lived ashore for varying periods of time in many countries I can honestly say, “There is no place like home.” Home for me is now Darwen after being brought up in Accrington and living most of my civilian life in Blackburn. My kids, apart from the youngest daughter in Spain, live close enough to be accessible yet far enough away not to be a nuisance.

After living in Bahrain for 18 months it was a joy to see green fields and feel rain on my face.

After living in Capetown for two and a half years with Xmas on the beach in temperatures the other side of 30C I welcomed the snow of England.

Have some Karma Royboy39 to make up what anonymous children took away.

Re: France - Spain or Accy

I don't fancy Spain or France and am beginning to hate living here too..:( I am here because I would miss my family terribly. I would love to live in New Zealand but the wages are poor in comparison to house prices and the cost of living is high when you earn NZ$. Alternatively, Australia would be my second choice, but somewhere not as hot as Brissy or the Gold Coast, Maybe Melbourne or Tassie..:D

Margaret Pilkington 15-07-2007 19:21

Re: France - Spain or Accy

Lettie....go to Tassie......my sister has just bought a parcel of beach front land to build a house on.......they only migrated 5 years ago...they both work hard......she is a Nurse and her Hubby is a policeman...they own their own house and have another house that they rent out and have just got the plans for this new holiday home in Tassie....thinking that when they retire it will be a good place to spend their days.
Adelaide and South Australia are lovely too....they are looking for migrants and they have relaxed the migration laws to encourage people to go and live there. I would love to do it, but alas they want earners and breeders and I don't now fit either of those categories.

Re: France - Spain or Accy

If you are thinking of places other than Accy, France or Spain, there is always Canada .... second largest country in the world with only 30 million people, lakes, forests, mountains, prairies ... all the good stuff. A fantastic standard of living, clean safe cities ... we have abundant natural resources which will fuel our economy for decades (oil, lumber, gold, potash, uranium, nickle, grain, marijuana (British Columbia's largest cash crop)) and a great health care system. Not to mention a large skunk population. It don't get any better than right here; that's why I never travel out of the country any more.

A friend at work's daughter emigrated to Adelaide couple of months back. She was a policewoman in Leicester, he a BT Engineer. Course she couldn't join the Police Force there because she did not have Australian citizernship, but qualified swimming instructress, could teach Spanish, etc.

They were assured plenty of jobs for them to go at, but when they got there this was not the case, lots of the industries, offered before they set out, were making people redundant and only jobs on offer were cleaning, etc.
The reason they chose Adelaide was something to do with a points system you have when going to Australia.

They hated it ... said the houses were no better than the ones based in some of our more shoddy council estates, people with caravans/cars parked on their lawns and sitting out at night on sofas. Nowhere to go socially at night either.

Was very heartbreaking, but that they decided to come back home again after 4 weeks. Moving back to Leicester this week (after a stay in Ossie with my friend) having been offered their jobs back. Ok.. some might say, didn't give it long enough, but you can't help your initial instincts I suppose, can you ?

Me, much as would be extremely pleasant to visit France and Spain for long periods during the year; HYNDBURN is my comfort zone and would not wish a divorce.

Sure does ... but a little cold is nothing to be afraid of. One winter I spent in northern Saskatchewan it quite often got down to -40c. But we clapped on snow shoes and went ice fishing, or out x country skiing, or out on the sleds, snowmobiles that is. But the winters are getting warmer all the time. Global warming is really here. Last xmas day we bbq'd!

But the winters in Ontario are not usually all that bad ... and it is nice to have 4 distinct seasons (unlike rain all the time ... had to get in that dig). Out on the west coast in Vancouver the winters are probably no colder than they are in Accy. And even if they were it is a small price to pay for the unblievable scenery. The Rockies and the Pacific! And if you like cool wet weather, there is always the Rock ... the great Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

I really hate to get serious about it, but in Canada we are blessed. We have it just as good as the Americans, maybe better. Someone once said that a Canadian is an unarmed American with medicare.:D
