Famous misquotes.

I'm currently reading Tina Brown's The Diana Chronicles, and howled with laughter last night. A close friend of Diana's apparently told Ms. Brown that Diana never called her butler Paul Burrell 'her rock'. What she actually said was 'he's wearing my frock'. True or not, it is very funny.

Another suprise misquote is that Sherlock Holmes never said 'Elementary my dear Watson' in any of the Conan Doyle book, it was only used in the subsequent films, and Marie Antoinette actually said the revoting peasants should eat bread, rather than the oft quoted cake.

Anymore misquotes?

Jimmy Cagney never said "You Dirty Rat" neither did Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca say "Play it again Sam".

'Well here's another fine mess you've got me into' is a mis-quote,it should be

"Why don't you come up and see me some time?" Mae West to Cary Grant, misquote.

"Why don't you come up some time...and see me?" is what she really said.

"And not a lot of people know that" - Michael Caine

Misquote from Alfie

I like that one because of the Harry Enfield & Chums sketches.
"My name, is Michael Paine, & I am a nosey neighbour... now..." :D

Actually said by Peter Sellers, attributing it to Michael Caine in a brilliant impression of him, on The Parkinson Show over 35 years ago. :)

Apparently Nelson did say 'Kiss me Hardy', and not 'Kismet Hardy', as the OED gives the earliest use of the word kismet being in 1849.
