would you???
A bank handed over a 19 year old, £135.000 in ERROR into her bank account, By the time they had realised the mistake, the money had all gone!!....
Now she faces a custodial sentence, the question is would you spend it if you found that much in your account?? I would be very tempted:rolleyes: after all it is the banks mistake:o......but then again its not your money to spend:(...emmmmm |
Re: would you???
try getting your money back off them when they wrongley charge u
|
Re: would you???
Spend, Spend & more Spend.:)
Would probably withdraw it, clear all my debts, put the rest n another bank account, give it 6 months if nothing came of it its mine. |
Re: would you???
a few years ago i was in manchester, me n reece had just got off the metro on market street and where heading for primark, we went by a cash machine and there was some money just coming out of it, obviously the person who had wanted the cash had forgot it, it turned out to be £350 i told reece to get it and we took it straight back into the bank, i gave it to a cashier in the bank and told them what had happened, and all i got was 'oh' no thankyou or anything, i still dont know if the person it belonged to ever got it back, but at least my concience was clear

Re: would you???
flashy, i would have nabbed it, do you not wish you had now??

I think alot depends on how much money there is when you find it. Small amounts like £10 or £20 I would probably keep, but large amounts I'd hand in. In cases like the one in Panther's case above, then common sense says you won't get away with it. The bank were always going to miss £135,000 and trace it back. It's obvious it's not yours and is therefore theft if you spend it. |

Re: would you???
I know it was the banks mistake, but surely she must have realised that the bank would eventually find out, & that she'd have to give it back.
|
Re: would you???
with £135.000 she could have moved and changed her I.D;)
then they would have never caught her |
Re: would you???
Would it really be worth looking over your shoulder all the time, just for £135K?
 |
Re: would you???

Re: would you???
I don't think she should have been sent to prison but she sho9uld have had enough sense to realise that someone would eventually notice the mistake and she'd have to account for the money. If I'd noticed a sudden huge deposit like that I would have contacted the bank.
Same with the cash dispenser money. I would have handed that in too. |
Re: would you???
Id have had to own up too.£135,000 is just too much money,it would have been on my conscience all the time, wondering if the bank were on to me yet.I couldn't cope with the worry of being found out if I spent the money.

Re: would you???
If this girl/woman has spent £135,000 in the time it's taken the bank to notice the mistake, then she obviously knew what she was doing and therefore she now deserves to suffer the consequences.
|
Re: would you???
Silly silly girl. Its not your money so leave it or at least let the bank know. She must be very very dumb.
|
Re: would you???
If I found extra cash in my bank account I would tell the bank. I would also tell them that I am claiming 10% for recovering their money for them.
There was something on the news today where a kid bought 2 Playstations on E-Bay and the parcel arrived stuffed full of cash (several thousand) but no Playstation. The police have the cash now whilst they investigate. |
Re: would you???
im wondering what on earth, she spent it on!
£135.000, is a lot to spend!! |

Re: would you???
Difficult one this, depends on ones cicumstances, you can bet the person concerned had many friends for a short while. She could have transferred the lot to an offshore account, and said the same person that put it in the account, took it out, Mr/Mrs nobody:D.

Re: would you???
I would be daft to think that 135 quid was mine to keep. I would have alerted the bank to the error.
In Flashy's case, in earlier years, I would have, and have, done the same. However, your putting alot of trust in the person you give that money to rather then the company they work for. I now would take a different tack. I'd have waited outside the ATM machine as the person would shortly notice the money gone and come on back. If I hadn't the time, I'd have left a note on the machine or with the bank to have the person get in touch with me. I just put myself in the person's shoes that "lost" their money. I would sure hope and trust (but probably not expect) the money be returned to me! Brian |
Re: would you???
I think the lass must have been a little naive thinking that someone's just dropped £135 K into her account for a shopping spree !! Surely it might have crossed her mind to check out where the dough had come from !! By the looks of it she's going to have a bit of time to reflect upon her mistake !!

When I worked in a bank there used to be a standard joke that you could leave any amount of money lying around and it would stay exactly where you left it but put a pen down and you'd never see it again. |
Re: would you???
this actually happened to me, i recieved my bank statment through the post on my way to work opened it whilst having a brew, lo & behold i had a grand (1,000) too much in my account ...mmmmm what did i do? took timeoff work went straight to the bank asked the cashier to checkmy account she came back & said it was mine (no1) i asked her to check it again (no2) said it was mine again, then i saw the undermanager & asked him to check it, they both went off together, came back said it was mine (no3), i then said ."if i draw the whole amount would that be ok" the reply was yes .........i did keep telling them it wasn't mine .................i then saw my friend peter the bank manager so i asked him to check it for me, so off they went , bank manager, undermanager, cashier to check ........after another 20 mins they came back to tell me it was not mine (thank god ) it was someone same address different town ..........i then got a letter off the bank telling me i was overdrawn £6 the cheeky b*****d's .......i was told later i could have legally kept & spent it with no come back as it was a mistake by the bank .

Re: would you???
I'd have opened a high interest account bunged the lot in there so that when they came for it I'd have at least made a few quid :D, but also have the money to pay back.
Of course she knew it wasn't hers. (Actually I loved the quote of "some of hte expenditure was run of the mill like Asda and Tesco's. Othere things were more exotic like a £10,000.00 holiday and items from Simply pleasures and Anne Summers.";) With regards to Flashy's £350, I'd have done the same there is a huge difference between a corporate entity and an individual. |

Re: would you???
No....I would know it wasn't mine and my conscience would not let me spend any of it. I would notify the bank of their error and hope they would recognise my honesty and donate a few quid to my account.

the bank made the mistake, so tuff, they should not be allowed to ask for it back, the silly twit who transfered it in the first place should pay it back:D |
Re: would you???
I don't pay any bank charges. It would not be my money, and it would be dishonest of me to use it.
mistakes happen, if the DWP overpaid me I would have to pay it back, and what is more I would expect to pay it back. |
Re: would you???
Panther, suppose you worked in a bank and were expected to make up any discrepancies at the end of the day........would you feel that was fair?
The girl knew that the money was not hers yet she continues to spend it.....totally daft. |
Re: would you???
After saying all that, we should not expect to get a reward for doing what is, essentially, the right thing.

Re: would you???
Think i would have got a statement printed out from the bank just so i could say that i have actually had that much money in my account, (even if it wasn't mine it still would have looked good). Then would have questioned it and would definately not have spent any until it was sorted out. Might have been tempted to put it in a high interest account though then would have tried to keep the interest that was made on the money.
|
Re: would you???
would notify the bank right away... as soon as i returned from me world cruise.:D

Re: would you???
I can only think this young woman is one fish short of a shoal. Who in their right mind wouldn't expect the bank to find out its mistake? It's one thing knowing the money wasn't hers but it's another to think she could spend it and nobody would ever know.
It was obviously meant for an account with a similar number to hers and she should have realised that the person who deposited it would query where it had gone. I think she should have treatment for her stupidity as much as punishment for her dishonesty. |
Re: would you???
well for all you who are interested i used to work on cash machines, and i can tell you how it works
1, if you had left the money in the machine it would have retracted and gone into a seperate bin, so when the poor schmuck went back into the bank and explained they could have checked and it would have also left a record of " some money" being retracted 2, because you actually took the money the chances are the bank just pocketed the money as the customer has no way of proving that they had not taken the money out of interest an old scam used to be, go to machine withdraw 200 when the money comes out, remove a few notes from the middle without touching the top or bottom note, the cash would then retract you could then go in and argue you hadnt taken any dont bother trying it as ALL modern machine now have a device called a DVLT that measures the thicknes of the notes going out and coming back in so to do the right thing in future (if you really want to) stand by the machine until it retracts the money, then they stand a chance Dazza |
Re: would you???
I read an article the girl gave to the LET, to her credit she fully admits what she did was wrong, and is expecting to receive a custodial sentence.
|
Re: would you???
Many years ago I had a 'bank error in your favour' of £30 - I just kept quiet about it - treated it as 'compen' for the charges they were levying then for just having an account (even in credit) -'The Monopoly of Life'
