young drivers

my son past is driving test this week yippie untill he seen the price of car insurance.it got me thinking .a tv report showed that 1 out of 8 drivers under 25 caused road traffic acidents what about the other 7 out of 8 seems to me the goverment are using young drivers to take traffic of the roads there on about changing age limited making them drive for twelve months with instructers before going in fort the test.i think they are trying to make driving for the rich .this is a good way of them reducing the number of vehicles in the futer being on the roads .making the young to take the blame when there is a hidden agender.why not make them drive for a period in 1000cc cars or less and have them resticted to a set mile per hour .

And more than likely most of those have never even passed a test or actually own their own car anyway, they have probably 'borrowed' a strangers car.

It's the same with lots of things. The majority end up being penalised for the way the minority behave. I think there could be an advantage in what you suggest Davo.

the many always suffer for the few davo! like the idea of 1000cc max etc, i think it would help cos the" few" are real maniacs behind the wheel.;)

It is not just young drivers who are graded for their lack of experience by insurance companies.
The companies assess the amount of risk to them from stats gathered over a number of years and young drivers are at the top of the risk league.
Skill in driving comes through experience that is why we have a no claims bonus system........drive safely and it costs you less.
A lot of young drivers in my experience when passing a test are tempted to see how fast they can go in a car or other vehicle on the open road.
The art of driving is not how fast you can go, i'ts how fast you can deal with a situation should one arise.

luckly my car insurance has dropped from £1500 down to 900 over the past three years. try the pass plus scheme as that saved me £1200 - course cost £100.

Alec will be 17 this September and is constantly going on about learning to drive. He does need a licence before he goes to University at 19 as he is aiming to be a Paramedic.

I would like to think he will be a sensible driver after the state he saw me in after my accident.

Only letting them drive 1000cc cars wont matter really as they can still reach speeds up to 100MPH. I cant think of a way to restrict thier speed. You cant cap it at a set speed really apart from 70 but who here who drives is going to say 100% truthful they have never gone over 70MPH?

Re: young drivers

As with lots of other things, peer pressure affects the behaviour and risk perception of the young. We are by nature more impressionable when we are younger.
As i mentioned in another earlier thread,my daughter a driving instructor found that her own insurance didn't become noticibly cheaper until after her 25 birthday, despite having all the advance driving experience.
As another person said all young people suffer due to the irresponsible behaviour of the few.
It has and probably will always be the case.

This already happens on motorcycles. untill you are 21 you can't ride anything over 33bhp. Whilst this will still get to 100mph it takes a lot longer to do it. 1000cc cars will struggle to 100 but it takes an age. I'd also argue that 100cc cars tend to be make from tin foil and paper and are rarely good in crash tests. (Clio possibly being an exception????). I'd rather drivers be in 1500cc 2 ton mercs than 1000cc saxo's. I see a significant number of motorway accidents and it is rare to see a 'big car' driver being cut out by firemen but the small car fraternity are usually still there inside as no doors will open due to the shell twisting on the impact.

it has just cost my grandson
aged 17 1700 pound for his first insuranse
the car he has is a 25 year old golf
so not much chance a being a boy racer
insurers try always to bump up insurance not only against first timers

Re: young drivers

When i eventually managed to pass my test i already had a car no insurance on it though it was parked in my drive and stayed there till i passed. Then i went looking for insurance. I only wanted 3rd party fire and theft because it was a D reg VW Polo. I was 31 when i passed my test. It cost $421. When i insured it the 2nd year it went down to $350 because i hadnt had any accidents they knew about. Anyway i changed the car to a micra N reg - when i bought that i knew i needed to go fully comp. Rang round the insurance companies again cheapest was $375. Anyway by the time it came round for renewing again id had another fit and wasnt driving. When i got my licence back i still had the micra (id parked it in my garage and kept turning the engine over and running it up and down the driveway) so i rang round the insurance companies - I had no no claims bonus because i was driving when i had the last fit and had $1000 worth of damage to the car never mind the wall, anyway i rang them all up and one company said its cheaper to treat you as a new driver - with all the discounts they receive from the insurance companies it was $325. I asked how come and they said because they want your business the companies will give you a discount because you are a new driver - and they hope that when it comes to renewing that you will just stick with them and not bother looking round. Thats my experience of car insurance companies.

Re: young drivers

The simple fact is, a driver does not start to learn to drive untill the have passed the driving test and are out on the road on their own. As for under 25s these are the highest risk category for obvious resons, ok not all under 25s are 'boy racers' but like willow said the majority suffer for the minority. As for lowering the cubic capacity of the engines as entwisi said the manufactures will only soup them up and make them more attractive to the buying public. The solution is in trying something new with all drivers, manditory re-tests for all drivers every 10 years, as driving conditions get harder with the extra volume of traffic. Finally and this won't go down well with some members, the driving test should be made a lot more difficult, as there are a lot of very poor drivers on the road today.
