Accrington pubs

1 Attachment(s)
In the wake of the news about Accringtons pubs disappearing I thought I'd post this list from 1898. I bet there's a lot that people don't know about. If I'm correct there are still 28 of open.

Re: Accrington pubs

interesting list but cannot see colliers - birtwistle st, welcome - elephant st. and st.ledger- plantation street, all i used to frequent now long gone. feel sure they were there in 1898, wouldn,t put money on it though. lol:)

Re: Accrington pubs

Is Birtwistle street at Bedlam? If so they are all on there. Otherwise that ones missing.

ah yer correct about the two chris, but no birtwistle st ran along the top of elephant street accy, so the triangle was welcome, colliers, st ledger, the colliers has been omitted for some reason. welcome- lions (pint crystal) colliers- lions (pint crystal) st ledger- thwaites (big ben) lol

Only when you came to accrington they started barring people!!!! :D:D:D

My problem was i started at the dog and partridge, then the bay horse, then alma, then the victoria, then the park and then the hargreaves the problem was hiking back up that hill so having to stop again at the park, victoria, alma, bay horse, dog and partridge and then having to hike it back along the back lane over the border!!! Now was i still standing - what do you think? :D:D:D

My great grandfather ran the Lark Inn Abbey St, my grandmother ran the brown Cow in Bridge St, this later became the Central Club. the Flying Duchman in Abbey St, was where the Arden Inn now stands. The first pubs to shut down as
I recolect was the Red Lion in Abbey St, Cattle Market Abbey St, Welcome in Elephant St, Roland Rathbone was the Landlord,he took over the Lomax Arms in Gt Harwood, a real character who kept it for 30 or so years.

You'r right cashy she had it to, she used to drink in the Kings Arms when she retired, I believe she had a few husbands, .Arther Mort told me she 'planted' them on top of each other at Pleasington Cemetery. My Grandmother had the Globe Inn on Blackburn Rd, Grandad Tom took it in 1927 she left about 1957 when Mrs Dunn took over. Strange ting about that Mr Dunn fell down cellar steps and died after about 6 years, and my grandad died after 6 years in the same pub, both of them ran it on their own for about 30 years.

No, the Red Lion was rhe empty building on the corner, used to be PV Tubes. I'm talking where the garage is now. Used to be a church there and someone told me a pub, but he may be wrong.

Yes there was a friend of mine was brought up in it, it was either The Oak Tree or The Lord Nelson will give you name later. It was opposite the gaveyard that was removed to make a car park for the Swan.

The landlord fell down the stairs at the Welcome, see cashman's post, the Feildings had the Black Horse on Abbey St for a number of years in the late fifties/sixties, ask me another:D.

The landlords of the Welcome and the Globe in my recolection both met their early deaths by falling down the stairs, I
I do seem to recall an accident in the Black Horse in the sixties. The other pub near the Red Lion was only a few yards down from it, I'll get the name off my mate he used to live in it. There was another pub further down near the Canine Club, it was called The Brigade, anyone remember that?

And why not? They can't have it all their own way all of the time. Did you read the Telegraph? The owners of a cafe in Darwen are not allowing non-smokers to use the seats outside which were put there for the social outcasts, now when the sun comes out they want to sit in the midst of all that smoke thus running the risk of passive smoking. Talk about have your cake and eat it:confused:

Totally agree, barstewards, they've forced us out onto the streets and now they wanna sit with us cos there's no atmosphere in the pubs, make yer feckin minds up,hopefully fat boy Brown will see sense and do away with the ban on smoking,he's gonna lose a lot of revenue cos of it,I've not stepped foot in a pub since I was stopped from smoking in one,I think they should put disclaimers on pub doors ' this is a smoking pub' f*ck off if ya don't like ciggy smoke,go to a pub that is non smoking, plenty of em,leave us smokers alone, rant over:D

I appreciate that tobacco smoke permeates fabrics and is unpleasant for non smokers, but consider the alternative - the pubs will close one by one without the patronage of smokers, because their profit margins are too tight to wait for the time when the smokers have died off (albeit prematurely) and there is a whole new generation who want to use pubs and who dont smoke. By that time there wont be a pub to go to to get smelly in.

That young man was called Michael Bartram.....he was just a couple of years younger than me and went to the same school.

George Clarkson...the owner lived on Higher Antley Street across from my Gran...his second wife was a Sister at Accy Vic......all totally irrelevant I know, but maybe of interest to someone out there.

The lady that fell down the cellar was called Margaret Fielding and not the landlord, she left 2 kids aged 3 and 5 and was related to the Fieldings who had the Black Horse
