I think it was even longer than 10 years when Five Arches was demolished. It is probably nearer twenty years. Even the old Shoe Mill Chimney has gone now. I don't know how long ago that was.

You can go up Willows Lane, down Miller Fold heading for Nelsons Farm? Or you can be boring and take Manchester Road – Hill Street then walk down from there.

I was beginning to think must walk with my eyes shut because I've been up there with the dog up to a couple of years ago and didn't see a viaduct. It's been about 2 years since the dog died and I've not been up there since.

If it was part of the old Manchester line that could explain why it's not there.

The bridge across the motorway doesn't qualify as a viaduct.

viaduct n. 1 a long bridgelike structure, esp. a series of arches, carrying a road or railway across a valley or dip in the ground. 2 such a road or railway. [based on Latin via 'way']

A bridge built over dry land or over a wide valley and consisting of a number of small spans is usually referred to as a viaduct; the term overpass is applied to relatively short bridges crossing highways and railways.

Is the one referred to near West End a continuation of the railway line?

Oh now I seem to have started a debate about what constitutes a viaduct! :s_jplol:

Re: Campaign To Keep The Arndale Clock

It is, as I recall, a single span arch that allows the railway to cross Blackburn Road.

Re: Campaign To Keep The Arndale Clock

That'll be a bridge then I suppose.

You do all realise we aren't half doing a lot of threadwandering here don't you?
