Two points. Firstly, I find the term 'chinky' offensive and I'm surprised people still use it, especially when written down.

Secondly, Oldboy is a Korean film and not Chinese.
I consider Chan-wook Park to be one of the most exciting filmmakers in the world today.

the final closing scene to braveheart. what a film. people these days dont know what patriotism is or bravery.

and what people also dont know is a piece of history glammed up and made a mockery of by hollywood to suit them:mad:....absolute terrible film and no closer to a true story than I am to working for nasa !
the u.s film producers re-writing history to suit themselves...not for me...I cringe at some parts of that film..his accent was terrible in it...really bad...

glasgow guy 07-08-2007 11:47

Re: favourite film?

His accent at the battle of Stirling goes like this:

with a Scottish accent "They may take our lives..." then breaks into an Aussie accent "but they will never take our freedom mate....:(

Liam 07-08-2007 12:11

Re: favourite film?

hold on a minute, your are right about the movie being all fake but it's a good movie and William Wallace was a great hero that died for his country as a true patriot.
William Wallace used guerilla warfare to kill the evil English soldiers whom were raping and pilliging Scotland. Surely that alone is enough to celebrate a man's fight against oppression in the form of a great movie?

and i think you need to watch the film again because i think for aussie his scottish accent is superb. your just annoyed they never used a scottish guy for the part. who did you expect them to get? sean connery?

firstly I do not need to watch the film again:rolleyes:...and I am not being funny here but can I ask how often you hear a scottish accent ?...daily weekly ?..and if so is the accent the accent you would here from that part of scotland ?...I doubt its not..and the accent from that part certainley does not have an australian twang about it !

and why would I be annoyed ?...because they didnt use a scottish actor?..get real...it could have been played by many a non scots actor who could have probably done the accent better...

and the guerilla campaign was started by andrew murray who wallace joined and eventually took over his army when murray fell at stirling bridge - murray was hardly acknowledged/ if at all for his commitment.
wallace turned to guerilla tactics after his defeat at the battle of falkirk where wallace showed no great military leadership again trying to use schlitrons against the english longbow and his army were slaughtered.
he resigned his position as guardian of scotland where he then ran off trying to raise a foreign army against the english and when he returned he found that he had few friends or supporters left...

hardly someone to be proud of...stealing the glory, running off and then coming back to realise that he had not many friends left..

as for the made up story well where do you start ?

1) The reason why it is called the Battle of Stirling is because it was fought on Stirling Bridge, in mud. The English had to file down into small ranks so they could cross the bridge, while William Wallace came in with full plate armour, not kilts, and butchered them with the rest of the Scots.

2) Princess Isabella was a 13-year-old girl living in France when William Wallace was executed in 1305. She didn't marry Prince Edward until 1308, and the marriage took place in Boulogne, not London.

3) Malcolm Wallace had three sons: John, William, and Malcolm. He was not killed in a minor scuffle with the English. He, in fact, fought for several years with the English in order to free John de Baliol from the tower of London. At the time, Baliol was the rightful heir to the Scottish crown, and that was actually William's reason for fighting the English. Robert the Bruce was the one who actually liberated Scotland, right?

4) The voice-over at the beginning of the film tells us that Malcolm Wallace was a commoner with his own lands and constant references are made through-out the film to William being a commoner. However this is a common historical myth. Malcolm Wallace was in fact born as a minor noble and became a knight, as was William. They were poor as noble families went but were still infinitely more privileged than the commoners of the day.

5) In the opening scene of the film a caption at the bottom of the screen tells us it is Scotland 1280 AD and the voice-over tells us the King of Scotland had died without an heir etc. But Alexander III of Scotland did not die until 1286 AD.

6) The film hints that Wallace is the father of Isabella's child (and the ancestor of all future kings and queens of England) but Isabella's baby (the future Edward III) was born in 1312, seven years after Wallace's execution in 1305.

7) The title of the Duke of York did not yet exist in the 13th century - it was instituted only later and was normally used only by a younger son of the King.

8) Wallace - Sir William Wallace - was a noble, not a scruffy tribesman as shown in this film. As such, his trial (such as it was) and execution were detailed in the court records of the day and they still exist. He was dragged the three and a half miles from the Tower to Aldgate chained (not tied) to a piece of fencing, not on a wheeled cart, and he was never 'racked', just hanged vertically. He was never offered a chance to recant his beliefs in exchange for a quicker, more merciful death. While hanging, still alive, he was emasculated ('his privy parts cut away') and his genitals burnt on a brazier in front of him. The executioner then slit open his abdomen and disemboweled him, then his chest was cut open and his heart torn out. He was never allowed to speak, was not tied to a flat table and was beheaded after he was dead. The film gets all of this wrong.

9) At the battle of Falkirk, the Irish soldiers fighting for Edward change sides at the last moment and go over to fight with the Scots. In reality, there were no Irish troops present at the battle. The only troublemakers amongst the English army were the contingent of Welsh bowmen who showed a reluctance to fight Wallace but this was more out of fear rather than sympathy for the Scots.

10) Scots did not wear the kilt until the 17th century. They wore the saffron shirt prior to that (in Braveheart's time).

11) Prince Edward was not a mincing homosexual stereotype. His homosexuality did not become obvious until after he became king and started taking male 'favourites'. Before then he was regarded as the perfect prince.

12) In the movie the Scots sack the English city of York. Actually they sacked the city of Carlisle.

I mean if your going to do something then it should be done right... I think the truth would have made a far more interesting story - surely you can agree to that..

Re: favourite film?

yes the story is far fetched but i think if they'd of made the film any other way it would'nt of been as catching or as thrilling. you tell me what films these days are based on truth in every aspect. end of the day it is just a film, well tis based on truth or far fetched it's still only a film and should just be enjoyed by the watcher instead of being crictisized.

like the film escape from alcatraz with clint eastwood. in the end it shows him escaping but in the real life story he drowned.

what about titanic? instead of showing all the truth they based it around a love story and glorified that. by the end of the film you've already forgotten about the hundreds of peopel that were left to die because the men working on the boats wouldnt open the locks on the doors.

your right in many ways, but end of the day its just a film, enjoy it. i get what you mean about the accent tho. when americans try sounding english it sounds awful. you being scottish probably will notice his twang more.

thanks ian but I have to pay thanks to the history lessons at school...thats all we got for years and I really enjoyed it at the time..which is why I have such a dislike for the film - cos its all wrong..I even know that some scottish historians walked off the set of the film when it was being made due to the fact it was a load of tosh..
you can even look at the film about the secret code the germans couldnt unlock...& pearl harbour...all glamourized by the u.s film idiots and all had the real history behind each story re-written to suit the americans..as in they won/ they had the idea...

Was Braveheart ever meant to be historically accurate? For Hollywood (and most other film producing industries) the main aim is to make money. They never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

To be fair, I can understand why people find films such as Braveheart cringe worthy, but if I wanted truth and accuracy I wouldn't be watching a commercial film for it.

garinda 07-08-2007 14:46

Let's face it, Hollywood has never been noted for it's historical accuracy.

In 1939 it cast Bette Davis as Elizabeth I and Errol Flynn as Essex, in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex.

I remember watching 'The Exorcist' for the 1st time when I was about 15, absolutely crapped myself, but it certainly made it's impression on me. Have watched it loads of times since but it appears relatively tame now in this day and age.

Maybe a half truth or a hypothetical scenario, but a tear jerker for me. I am not gay in the sense of the word's meaning, but am not without feelings, the music itself was enough, when played with the video/movie clips of his childhood were very moving. I rate this film as the best of it's subject/type I have ever seen.

My two favourite films are'nt love weepies but they made me use a box of tissues. Deer Hunter and Salvadore, very true and very moving.

The Deer Hunter was probably the first anti Vietnam war film to be shown. Salvadore I may have or may not?, a brief description of the plot would be appreciated thank's.:o

two movies which are great for a double header are 'Judgement at Nuremburg' and the recent German movie 'Downfall'

others which make good back to back viewing are ' Amile' and 'A very long Engagement ' (good for a inexpensive romantic evening in )

also 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Joyuex Noel'

:D

Salvadore stars James Woods as a war journalist his best mate is a war photographer who films the atrocities of the war. He is killed filming, but manages to pass the film on so that the world can see what is going on. James Wood falls for a local girl and tries to smuggle her out of Salvadore but she is taken off the bus by officials and disappears. The character played by james Woods spent years searching for her. I have never been able to find out if he ever found her again. A true and brilliant , if harrowing film.

Yes I remember the film, one that really requires another viewing, do not remember if they were reunited, this was based on truth as you say very harrowing.

ok, I know the thread is supposed to be about your favourite film/movie, so forgive the wander with this review of a current movie

I've just spent 116 minutes watching a DVD movie called '300 ' a remake I suppose of the Richard Egan 1960s film ' 300 Spartans ' .
Thankfully I missed this remake when it played on the big screens...........what to say .........if you are a teenage boy who likes 'gladiator' movies you and your buddies will love this, if you are a grown-up hopefully you will see this piece of garbage as the biggest piece of tripe ever put on celluloid since John Wayne appeared and produced the Vietnam war movie 'the Green Berets' .
If there was a Leni Riefenstahl Oscar award for best piece of political propaganda this would win hands down . This nothing more than a subliminal recruiting ad. for the U S armed services designed to boost intake of immpresionable disadvantaged youth during the 'War on Terror'

:( :(

ps apologies for the mixed usage of 'film' and 'movie' my definition is ...if its cr*p and made in the US its a movie , if made anywhere else and has some artistic merit its a film ;)

Whilst I (and numerous critics/academics before us) would agree with your analysis of 300, I think you have to be careful to separate the ideology of the film from the production process itself.

I was fortunate enough to see 300 on an IMax screen (which are enormous if you've never seen an IMAX film) and was blown away by the spectacular visuals in the film. I have no desire to see the film again, especially on a TV screen, but to dismiss the film entirely because of its hegemonic transmissions is to do it a great disservice, in my opinion.

Does anyone remember a t. v. series from the sixties called Big Breadwinner Hog? Ithink Richard Egan had his first starring role in that. I had a crush on him back then.

I've just watched Mike Leigh's film 'All Or Nothing'. The man is a genius. His body of work in the future will portray the Britain of today, just as Dickens did in the nineteenth century with his books.

Grotesque, dark, sad and funny. Pure brilliance.

I first watched his work when I was fifteen in 1980, when the BBC showed a retrospective of his earlier television plays, including 'Abigail's Party' and 'Nuts in May'.

'Life is Sweet', 'Secrets and Lies', 'Vera Drake', I've never seen one of his films that didn't thrill me. The ensemble of actors he uses have deservedly received their Oscar nominations, and prizes from all the major film festivals.

All that and he's northerm too, can't be bad. Classic British film making.

Alan Clarke's 'Rita, Sue and Bob Too' is an absolute classic.
