there really are stupid parents in this world...

i think they must put something in the water down south...

A couple in New Zealand is planning to call their newborn son Superman after officials rejected their original choice of 4Real.
Pat and Sheena Wheaton have been frustrated by rules in New Zealand banning names that begin with a number.
Mum and Dad decided to call their son 4Real after seeing an ultrasound image of him. It was then they realised that their baby was "for real".

Undeterred, the Wheatons now plan to call their newborn son Superman, but have said they will refer to him as 4Real.
The baby's family argues that if people can be known as John Williams III, for example, then why can a number not be used at the beginning of a name?
Officials in New Zealand have been involved in similar disputes before.
In the past they have had to intervene to stop parents naming their offspring Satan and Adolf Hitler.

it is stupid, but parents should be allowed to call thier kids what they want, be it noddy or 4realor superman:eek: which is pretty stupid!!, i wouldnt like it if someone said to me i could not call my kid what i have called him,.
4 real is silly, but so is bluebell, and most of other names, so why should this be any different, besides i could change my real name to panther by deed poll if i wanted:D!

I agree with the officials, silly names shouldn't be allowed, its not fair to the children of these idiots who have to go through life with a daft name.

Wait till they get older and sue their parents for cruelty. If these numpties want to have their offspring stand out then let it be for something other than a claptrap made up name.

Its not so much the silly names but the change of spelling of the regular ones that gets up my nose.

I have a granddaughter named Savannah and a grandson named Sorrel. At least his parents had the good sense to add Alan and James.

That bugs me too Jambutty.I know Melony,Zowie,Rebekah and Tomas.I can't see how parents can be stopped from calling their kids what they choose but this wouldn't do for me.I'm such a stickler for spelling it would just annoy me so much when people spelt it wrong but what else can you expect? At least with an unusual name people would ask first how to spell it but when you hear the name Melony you just assume it would be spelt Melanie.

Rebekah is the original Biblical spelling of the name. Rebecca is an anglicised version, and as such, is the change of spelling.

well this is even better lol.......

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese couple tried to name their baby "@", claiming the character used in e-mail addresses echoed their love for the child, an official trying to whip the national language into line said on Thursday.

The unusual name stands out especially in Chinese, which has no alphabet and instead uses tens of thousands of multi-stroke characters to represent words.

"The whole world uses it to write e-mail, and translated into Chinese it means 'love him'," the father explained, according to the deputy chief of the State Language Commission Li Yuming.

While the "@" simple is familiar to Chinese e-mail users, they often use the English word "at" to sound it out -- which with a drawn out "T" sounds something like "ai ta", or "love him", to Mandarin speakers.

Li told a news conference on the state of the language that the name was an extreme example of people's increasingly adventurous approach to Chinese, as commercialisation and the Internet break down conventions.

Another couple tried to give their child a name that rendered into English sounds like "King Osrina."

Li did not say if officials accepted the "@" name. But earlier this year the government announced a ban on names using Arabic numerals, foreign languages and symbols that do not belong to Chinese minority languages.

Sixty million Chinese faced the problem that their names use ancient characters so obscure that computers cannot recognise them and even fluent speakers were left scratching their heads, said Li, according to a transcript of the briefing on the government Web site (*华人民共和国*央人民政府门户网 ).

One of them was the former Premier Zhu Rongji, whose name had a rare "rong" character that gave newspaper editors headaches.
