Oh is that what there all in there for then? So no tax dodgers or non payment of fines or little crimes.. there all people who have hurt someone else are they? I have no idea what sort of prisoners they have in there.. But I do know people get sent to prison for crimes that certainly dont deserve to live like that... There are poeple who should be in worse... Unfortunatly some people just tar everyone with the same brush..

people like that are NOT usually sent to pentonville, locally they usually send em to preston, kirkham etc and similar around the country.

as i wasn't disputing your human rights comment, was saying they are low priority in my book.and as you say you have no idea what sort of prisoners they have in there, unfortunatly you seem to be tarring everybody with the same brush, when you admit you dont know.

A similar report last September suggesting the prison should be closed also states;

Quote:

42% said it was easy to obtain illegal drugs.
Presumably the cockroaches carried them in then :)

Re: Jail 'Infested With Rats And Cockroaches'

We need to keep prisoners healthy so that when they come out they wont be spreading disease among the law abiding population, and be fit to work, so do not continue to draw off the state for their keep. Vermin go hand in hand with many diseases.
The original principal of having a free for all health service was so that infectious/contagous diseases would not be spread amongst the whole population by sick persons who had no money to pay for treatment.

Re: Jail 'Infested With Rats And Cockroaches'

They do have prision doctors & can be duely escorted to hospital if the need be, again the media print the situation as to dramatistical effect.

shakermaker 09-08-2007 14:49

Re: Jail 'Infested With Rats And Cockroaches'

I thought we were a civilised society and prison was intended for reform, not for keeping offenders in inhumane conditions.
I'm not saying they should have an easy ride at all, but offenders still deserve basic human rights.

garinda 09-08-2007 15:01

Re: Jail 'Infested With Rats And Cockroaches'

Example.

A convicted tobacco smuggler gets three months inside. He contracts Weil's disease, from coming into contact with food contaminated by rats. He's released, and enjoys a night of passion with the missus, and because it can be transfered via semen, she also contacts this disease, which can kill. Therefore her human rights have also been affected.

Although I'm certainly not in favour of prison being a place of comfort, I do believe a civilised society should strive to ensure prisons are at least sanitary.

cashman 09-08-2007 15:05

Re: Jail 'Infested With Rats And Cockroaches'

correct shaker,i'm saying though its low priority compared to other things, prisoners do get basic human rights, for instance if a con requires hospital treatment they aint put on a waiting list like you n me, they are treated within a couple of weeks sometimes even days, thats more rights than us.to me the money should be spent on improving the NHS for ALL people, i.e. cancer drugs that people cannot afford etc, as usual the press (as Mel said) are sensationalising this, people waiting months for treatment aint news its boring.some nicks are antiquated,no question, but theres "stuff" comes before improving there lot. and as for reform in an ideal world that would be great, but they do not reform very many,as statistics bear out,a very high % re-offend and return.

I agree with you there:).I wouldn't want to think that prisoners are living the life of Riley ( whoever he is:D) in our prisons but they should not be made to live in squalor.

At the end of the day if they had not committed the crime they would not be there in the first place. They ignored the human rights of their victims so to hell with their human rights. Some in the pokey seem to be a damned site better of than law abiders in the outside world.:mad::mad:

Re: Jail 'Infested With Rats And Cockroaches'

So it costs £22,778 to keep a prisoner banged up and they reckon it is £2,000 too low.

Now let me see how much does a pensioner get to live er sorry I mean exist on? Even if you take into account rent and Council Tax paid for, it is still way, way below what is spent on a pensioner. And the pensioner has to buy food and pay for energy and water. Never mind the pensioner what about those workers who only get paid the basic minimum if they are fortunate to actually have a job. Then there are those who are unemployed but are desperate for work and can’t find any.

When an accused is found to be guilty and sent down s/he loses all human rights, which is not the same as humane rights. Much of the squalor is self inflicted.

I think a good proportion of the costs will be down to employing security staff to guard the prisoners...which most pensioners don't need.:D

Such as Prison Officers if there wasn't any prisoners. Actually, when you put it that way, prison inmates are actually doing a good public service. :D

They might be inclined to enjoy that so dont forget rancid water and stale mouldey bread. If we dont get tough soon they will have more rights freedoms living conditions etc than we as law abiders do.

Its the screwed up world that we sadly have created. A pensioner is worth at least 10 of those locked up.

stanleybabe 10-08-2007 16:05

Re: Jail 'Infested With Rats And Cockroaches'

Pentonville is a local prison, which means it houses both remand and sentenced prisoners. Therefore, at any one time, there will be prisoners who have committed petty crime and prisoners who have committed very serious crime. Also, bear in mind that if a prison is infested with rats, mice and cockroaches, it's not just the prisoners who are affected. It's the staff too, and as someone who works for the Prison Service, it's not acceptable that a prison should not be a clean and hygienic environment.
By the way, dramatistical is not a word!

Stanleybabe :(

I’m sure it will be but even if half the £22k is down to employing the screws etc it still leaves more than what a pensioner gets.

It wouldn’t surprise me to discover that some members of the armed forces get paid less than what is spent on keeping a villain in jail. And they put their own lives on the line.

Same old "let em rot.. give them the birch" brigade answering this post,It's all very well to say these people (the prisoners) don't deserve anything better, but law abiding tax paying people work in the same place.. I'm sure they could do without rat's and roaches!!

Re: Jail 'Infested With Rats And Cockroaches'

Sorry Kipax, but if anyone raped or murdered any member of my family,I would only hope that they would be put in a hellhole, believe me, prison is a whole lot safer than being outside with my family, convicts SHOULD not have any human rights at all, they lost those privileges when they commited the crime, when I say convicts I mean rapists, paedos and murderers, hang the lot of em,bring back the death penalty, that would defo sort out a few problems, while we're at it,send all the asylum seeking and Eastern European crims back to their own country as well,we're too soft over here,SO WHAT if they're gonna be persecuted in their country of origin, shudda thought about that when they came over here and persecuted the indigenous population of England

Prisons aren't only filled with the scum of the Earth. There's lots walking the streets who've never been caught, and maybe never will.

What about the old woman who is losing herself a bit and shoplifts, and gets three months? Should she be kept in a rat infested hell hole too?

Being an ex member of the armed forces myself,I left in 93 btw,I can honestly say that some of the scumbags in prison are treated way better than WE ever were,I've seen the damage a claymore mine can do,I've seen 1st hand what its like to have to scrape your mate up off the floor,I've seen 1st hand what its like to see your buddy get a 7.62 mm round in his skull,I'll tell you what,it aint nice, these people in prison don't know they are born:mad:

If it was up to me,I would put anyone over 16, in the army,I don't mean as cannon fodder btw,I mean it as a general disciplinary thing, that is what this country we all know and love is lacking, good old discipline, bring back the cane, bring back the birch, bring back anything that would teach all these little Chav some good old respect

I could go on for hours but I'm off to bed soon,I have to go to work so I can pay for asylum seekers and Wayne an Tracey and their 3 kids, even tho Wayne is only the Father of 1 of them cos Tracey couldn't keep her legs shut, the other 2 Fathers should be looking after their children, but, Trace doesn't know who they are, makes my blood boil,it really does,me an my Wife can't have kids,my Wife would be an excellent Mum,she works with kids every day,I see some snot nosed kid knockin them out for fun then having an abortion just cos 5 kids is too many:mad:
