Lancashire/Yorkshire boundary changes?
 

First off, through Genes Reunited, I found a second cousin (and her large family) from Yorkshire! It was/is very exciting:p. However, I found one of her posts especially interesting/humorous:

I live in Barnoldswick (one of those places that was always in Yorkshire until the government changed the boundaries and put us into Lancashire!! Doesn't go down well around here i can tell you!! I was born in Yorkshire and made sure my kids were!)( I'm about 17 miles from Accrington (I used to work there until a few years ago!)

How can a country as old as England change it's counties boundaries, especially when it's between Lancashire and Yorkshire? This had to create a bit of furor on both side eh? Does this happen "often?"

I've protective my dear cousin's name in case she decides to join up with Accyweb:p. It has been an absolute delight getting information from that side of the family. Wouldn't it be extra cool if some of my Accy family actually knew some of them?

There are quite a few towns and villages which have changed counties more than once. Besides Barnoldswick I can think of Todmorden and Gisburn.

When you had to be born in the county to play cricket for them, you'd hear tales of womem dragging themselves over their chosen border, whilst in the latter stages of pregnancy, just so their offspring would be eligible for a particular county, though I don't know how true it is.:D

County and town boundary changes are generally made for political reasons. The incumbent political party will change boundaries so that come an election, either national or local, it gives them an advantage. Ward boundaries are also changed for the same reason.

And they claim that some third world countries are politically corrupt.

In Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council we have the ridiculous situation where the Blackburn part is Jack Straw’s constituency and the Darwen part is part of Rossendale, Janet Anderson’s constituency.

I don't know if it's still so but Todmorden used to have the border through the middle of the town. Half of it was in Lancashire and half in Yorkshire.

The county thing happened in 1974 when Warrington suddenly bounced from Lancashire to Cheshire. I don't think either Warrington or Cheshire was very happy. My village, which had always been administered by Altrincham, came under Warrington from then on but a mile up the road from here the next village now comes under Macclesfield. Crazy!

Northerners, southerners, midlanders, Cornish, Scottish, Welsh or Irish we are all human with all the usual human failings and foibles.

It’s not where we come from that counts but who we are and how we behave.

There seems to be more changes going on than clothing changes in a Milan fashion show. It will be for political reasons only always so we are stuck with it sadly.

That all really surprises me. I guess everyone involved in these changes continue, through many generations, to refer to themselves as Red or White Rosers then eh?

Anyhow, the most important thing for me is finding real blood relatives over there. I'm still hoping to find me a Hall or Knight kin in Lancashire.

Regardless, my Accyweb family has treated me better then family and for this I'm most grateful. I'll keep my Accy bruvs, cuz, Mum, sistas (as long as you'll have me) . . . Hmm, I guess I might still an Accy Pop. Those over 75 and interestes can submit an application via PM!:p:p:p

Many moons ago during a lull in the Battle of the Roses a bored young Lancastrian sub-lieutenant decided to have a bit of fun at the expense of the Yorkies. After clearing it with his Commanding Officer he made his way to the top of a hill overlooking a Yorkist camp on the border of Lancashire and Yorkshire, somewhere near Gisburn, legend has it.
He called out to the Yorkshire sentry, " Any Lancashireman can thrash a hundred Yorkshiremen on his own with his bare hands." The Yorkshire infantryman immediately reported this to his superiors, who sent him back to arrange a convenient time and place for the confrontation. The following day at 7am the troop of Yorkists left their camp to do battle with the lone Lancastrian, just to be safe their colonel sent two hundred men; not a single one of whom returned.
The day after the Lancashireman returned to the Hill and shouted " A single unarmed Lancashireman can thrash five hundred Yorkshiremen with his bare hands." The Yorkshire commander sent a thousand just to be safe. Yet again not a single Yorkie returned.
This continued in similar way for a week or so, until the Yorkshire Colonel sent out a sizeable force of some five thousand troops. A solitary, bedraggled, dilapidated, battered and bruised Yorkshire trooper managed to make his way back to camp where he breathlessly, panting heavily and near to exhaustion managed to whisper to his senior officer " The barstewards are cheating, there's two of 'em."

After that tale yerself, I would be inclined to emigrate to Alpha Centauri to escape the Yorkshire wrath, if I were you. Apart from Charlie Williams Tykes don’t have a sense of humour.

There has always been rivalry between the red and white rose but today it is just friendly rivalry, except on the cricket pitch or football/rugby league field.

P.S. Lancashire thrashed Yorkshire in the recent county cricket match and at Headingly too. It felt sooooooo good.

And Haslingden, which comes under Rossendale Borough Council, is actually part of Greg Pope's district as an MP.
