That's the way to do it!!

I have just read that a young boy has been convicted of theft and damage to vehicles and his father is ordered to pay compensation out of his benifits........at last.

That's what's needed. If parents were made responsible for every criminal act committed by under 18s they would, perhaps, think twice before allowing them to run wild and do as they please. Father, mother or both should be hauled in front of the magistrates, alongside their brats, and punished severely for, at the very least, gross indifference and parenting without due care and attention.

How long before if implemented nation wide there would be an outcry? As the law stands a 10 year old is capable of understanding right from wrong as well as being responsible for his own actions. We want parents brought to heel over the way their offspring behave yet how would it balance out in the long term? The parent might have to fork out the money but will that make them a better parent or make them resent the offending offspring thus making it worse. A child that is resented might end up worse behavior wise than one that is treated as part of the family. This is going to be a rock and a hard place issue that will rumble on for many years.

How about not allowing people to have kids until they have taken lessons and instruction on parenting and passed a test? Just a thought.

If the compensation to the victims is being paid for out of the Fathers benefits , does this not in fact mean that the Govt. (you and every other tax payer) are paying the compensation.

Maybe if the Father had to do a few hours (80) on a vandal rehabilition projects he would take his parental responsibilities a bit more seriously
