Collector's magazines.
We've all seen them advertised, but has anyone bought a complete set?
You know the ones. The first issue comes at an intoductory price of £1.99, usual RRP £5.99 hidden away in small printed brackets, and includes a 'free' butterfly, a piece of doll's furniture, or a historically accurate toy soldier etc. I saw one advertised today that came with a Star Wars chess piece. Normal price being £7.99 per issue. That's over two hundred and fifty pounds for the complete chees set, plus you probably have to buy a 'collector's board' separately, when the cost of the whole thing is probably only worth twenty quid. So, anyone bought a whole set, started to and then given up, or prefer to spend your money on something else? |
Re: Collector's magazines.
I remember my daughter collecting something or other that had to have book binders. I think she had two full binders when I drew the line. It cost a fortune and she never really read them.
Young Charlotte, my little six year-old mate, started collecting stickers a few months ago. We worked it out that it would cost around 150 euros to fill her book........only, if she never had duplicates. She couldn't quite grasp the concept of swopsies either! Whatever they come up with it will be a rip off, but, same as you, Rindy, I'd like to know someone who bought the lot. |
Re: Collector's magazines.
I doubt you'll ever find anybody who has bought the full set, I know my sister used to buy them as to whether she ever got the lot I will need to ask her. So come on folks is anybody going to prove us doubters wrong?:D

Re: Collector's magazines.
I tried to buy a full set once (back in the early 70s) and it was ordered through the newsagents but one never came when I was on holiday and no matter how much I kept on at them I never got the back issue! So even I haven't got a full set! :D

Re: Collector's magazines.
I subscribed to the Blues Collection - 2 blues music cds & magazine every month. The total collection was due to be 45 cds - got them all.
Then nos 46 & 47 arrived and another direct debit was taken. I phoned them and asked why - "It has proved popular so we are extending it" Enough was enough - cancelled DD - just wondered where they were going to dig them up from (more obscure unknown artists) |

Re: Collector's magazines.
Well I almost have a full set of mind, body and spirit. got 10 binders in total got tothe last few issues and the paper shop on Longsdale St had to close and I never did get the rest.
I once got a set of records in the 70s. |
Re: Collector's magazines.
I've got a good idea. Why not a collectors set of Princess Di's bedroom conquests? You could have 'em all, little 2" minatures, collected every fortnight...starting with her bodyguard, then Carling, Adams, the bloke with the red hair, the rest of the Household Cavalry, Dodi...the list is endless. Get the stuff knocked up in China for 2p then charge ten quid a time and you'd be on a winner...there must be a million people in this county alone who collect this type of rubbish.
