No Lessons Been Learned

just listened to a reporter in portugal, describing the Mcanns journey from their villa to the airport via the coast road. was described as a "Media Frenzy" now innocent or guilty these people are under far more pressure the the Diana @ Dodi episode. and "Media Frenzy" was allegedly a main factor in those deaths, has NO lessons been learned? or is the Big Buck more important than human life?i suggest the Media think so.:(

If the public didn't crave the 'stories', then the frenzy would be for nothing.

Blaming the media is too simplistic.

life would be much better if simplistic views were taken i.e. Right n Wrong, we could go much deeper in this subject, like the " Media" has been a major contributer to public expectations, etc but that is not were i wish to go, you could always start a thread on it if you do.

What made me laugh though was on Saturday night when I was watching the late news and the anchorman and two pundits were going through the newspaper headlines for Sunday. They were talking about the media frenzy and how intrusive it was and how it had played a huge part in the investigation and how it had been absolutely crazy, then he said, 'oh, I've just heard Gerry McCann is coming out of the police station, so let's go over to our man in Portugal'. Can the newspapers and tv stations that have about half a dozen people each over there ARE the media frenzy? They all seem to talk about it as though it's the 'other' newspapers and tv stations fault and not their own.

I know what you mean. There is a tendency in this country for people to want to know all the details. It gets taken too far though. Kate and Gerry McCann still need the media to help them keep looking for Madeleine but I'm sure they wouldn't mind being left alone today of all days. It must have been heartbreaking to make the journey home without being followed all the way by media, and there were even photographers waiting in their street, outside their house, cameras at the ready, begging for a comment. Rothley is swamped with press today which must be extremely intrusive, not only for the McCanns but for their neighbours and others who live in Rothley. It's too much.
I just think the media should have left them alone today. Intrusive coverage like this has an almost voyeuristic feel to it, stirring up the emotions of the ghouls who get off on situations like these. It encourages the grief tourists to visit in their coach loads and friends, families, neighbours and colleagues end up being harassed too. It's not good for anybody when individuals are put under such intense media pressure.:(

agree with your comments lilly, but not what my point was about. = Media en masse following people in cars, thats already been a factor in other deaths.

Who remembers Terry Waite being kidnapped in Lebanon? His mother lived on our road, she was at no. 11 and I'm at 47. When he went missing the Press swooped on poor Lena, who was in her 70s, knew nothing and was just frantic about her son, and "camped out" outside her house, God alone knows why as Terry didn't live there. They had arc-lights trained on the front of her house, a big van outside her gate and reporters constantly trying to get her to talk. It was horrendous.

This sort of frenzy has gone on for years, fed by the salacious appetite of the public for any new "angle" on a story. The only way it could ever stop would be if the public stopped buying the more sensational papers and stopped commenting on TV and radio news. It's not going to happen - there's too much money to be made.

I agree to follow a car on a coastal road is nothing short of madness. They obviously didn't give a thought to the safety of anybody, it is madness!!

I don't think the public crave the stories to the extent of wanting to know every move they make and every step they take (sorry, didn't mean to sound like a song lyric)

The cars following the McCanns should be charged with dangerous driving if they get too close or try overtaking etc.
