I have found a site where you can fill your grocery basket and check which supermarket will be cheapest before you are transferred to the actual supermarket site to book delivery and checkout
mySupermarket - Compare Supermarket Prices – MySupermarket the supermarket comparison site
The goods are displayed better than either Tesco or Asda but being FULL of photos you need patience waiting for pages to load. After you have typed your postcode it displays all the supermarkets who can deliver to you (Sainsburys too).
You can import your 'favourites' from thier websites to make shopping quicker.
The prices do not include delivery charges which vary, but if you use discount vouchers from this site you can get more money off than they are charging for delivery

Much easier Bernadette. No queuing to get on/off the car park, no queuing at the till, no wandering round looking for items, no packing. Like Margaret said, saves on petrol and hassle.
I use Sainsbury's. They deliver in 1 hour time slots. If something you've ordered is not in stock then they send a close substitute (or you can ask for no substitutes). They point any subs out to you so if you don't want them the driver takes them back. There seems to be a thought that they palm off all the shortdated/going off stuff on the online shoppers but in 4 years I have never experienced this so I shall take that as a nasty rumour.:D

Another bonus is the occasional 'freebie'

I once got £40 worth of wine - not ordered and not paid for :D:D
That packer must have had a grudge against her employer or fancied giving me an xmas present :D
I have reported 'freebies' in the past and was told 'our mistake, keep it' (but I didnt report that one)

I use Sainsburys Online and it's very good. Everything is good quality and the fresh food is really fresh. If the driver is delayed, which is very rare, he will ring up from his van and give the reason, and his estimated arrival time, and if he's more than 10 minutes past your time-slot you get a £10 voucher. The only not so good thing is you can't order from the deli counter - unsealed cooked meats etc.

As a shopping-hater I would recommend online shopping every time. :)

On both Asda and Tesco sites you can register and fill a basket and then exit before checkout - until you checkout there is no order placed

bernadette, its even easier with Tesco who list everything you have bought when using your cluibcard in your 'favourites', that way yuo can just go down your normal shopping list and add what you want

We use it and it saves money as you don't end up picking up stuff you didn't go shopping for. :D

I should imagine once you get used to it and know what to order it is a lot less hassle but it would take me forever to decide what to order. Feel like I've been round Asda about three times now!!

I think most of them do that. Sainsburys site has a "Your Usuals" bit, then you can choose usuals by list or by aisle. It gives you what you've bought for about the last 5 times and you can order what's on it, leave out what you don't want and/or add to it. I would imagine they all have similar sites because of the competition.

I always use online. I started using them just at Christmas and did that a couple of times because I hate that last minute Christmas rush when the shops are busy and you need cranberry sauce :D

Then Asda did all that messing around with the car park and instore that I started using them every week or so. Now I use it every other week and go to the Co-op for bread and a few fresh things every other week.

In fact, just reminded me so I might go to Asda now for delivery on Friday.

Sometimes slots are available for the next day
You can look at slot times and book one
and you can still back out of all of it by not checking out
As long as you dont enter card details there is no order

PS you can even cancel or amend an order the day before delivery is due

I have just placed a Tesco order for groceries to the value of £72.53
plus delivery charge of £ 3.99 (cheaper mid week rate)
total £76.52
BUT I have used a voucher code worth £10, so I have saved £6.01 on the cost of the groceries.
net total £66.52
I have used a cashback credit card which is giving me a 4% refund, so that is another £2.66 saved
I also get Tesco clubcard points which will mean a future discount.

All of you who still stuggle to the store,
get uptight about the poor carparking facilities,
get impatient at checkout queues,
use petrol or bus fares to shop,
waste your time and energy lugging it all home
are throwing your money away
You will not find any supermarket checkout person who says-
"have a £8.67 cash refund please"

I shop for one person every 2 or 3 weeks - bigger shoppers will make bigger savings
You need to have an organised fridge, freezer and storecupboard.
Get organised and beat the big supermarkets at their own game

Those discount vouchers from the online voucher sites are getting scarce. I haven't found any (that were accepted) within the last month.
In order to get free delivery, I have two options, both need an order of £100 to qualify -
Asda - using an Asda credit card
Sainsburys - mid week delivery

I have just had a Sainsburys order delivered free
AND ......because he was 15mins late for the 1 hour time slot
he gave me a £10 voucher towards my next order

I have resurrected this thread after nearly a year because I want to tell that it is possible to get top notch food from Ocado(Waitrose) for a £1.99 delivery charge.(for orders over £70 on certain times on certain days)

I stopped using Asda many months ago following two disastrous deliveries -
I was sent a putrid rotting organic chicken with one day left on the 'sell by'
I got a refund and the next delivery free, but that delivery had 12 items missing.
Because it was not still on the van, I had a long laborious phone call with the store manager in which I had to minutely detail every missing item, and had to wait for a very late evening delivery of them. He also promised a £10 voucher would be credited to my account - it never was.
I cancelled my Asda card and 'washed my hands' of them

I now eat mainly organic stuff - it tastes better - so I am alternating between Sainsburys and Ocado(Waitrose)
Asda organics range is abysmal by comparison, and Tescos only a little better.
I shop fortnightly and have a large fridge/freezer.

I have been pleasantly surprised by Ocado - their stuff costs not much more but the food and delivery system are tons better than the others. You can see how little more it costs when using MySupermarket.com, and bear in mind that Ocado stock gormet food that others don't.

When I have wandered back to Sainsburys for cat food and non perishables, they have noticed my abscence and mailed me a voucher for 10% off !

Today I have had a delivery of organic stuff which had an original price tag of £99.74+ £1.99 delivery, which was actually reduced to £84.76 by a 10% discount and special offers.

...and I am eating like a lord (eg organic venison pate with port)- yummy:D

Ocado (Waitrose) have really excelled this week.
I got an email voucher for 15% off.- with a delivery deadline for today
I had a delivery only last week, and since a fortnightly shop is my norm, I wasn't in dire need of anything, but that was an offer to good to miss so I have stocked up on wines and spirits - they are bound to increase in price at the budget.

Last week I used Sainsburys (free delivery midweek on £100+)
Ocado have noticed my absence and sent me mail offering 10% off if I buy this week.

I don't need a delivery until next week, but, from past experience, I will likely get mail offering 15% off next week.

It is reaching a level where more people are realising that visiting a store is uneconomic.

There are those who say that they prefer to choose their own fresh produce to ensure freshness. I can see their point, but if freshness standards are not met (as they weren't when I got a putrid chicken from Asda), then people vote with their feet(keyboards) and they lose custom, as Asda lost mine.

We use Sainsburys mostly as Margaret says its free delivery tue/wed/thur, plus they have hourly delivery slots (tesco/asda are two hourly), and usually they are the cheapest as they either price match the other two or beat them. If you go through topcashback.com you get cashback for shopping with them too or nectar estores you get extra nectar points too!

I shop fortnightly because there is just me and the cat, and I can't manage to need enough in one week to qualify for a free delivery every week.

Lately I have been using Sainsburys and Ocado, because Asda specialise in junk, and Tesco vouchers are such a small reward for my custom.

Last week I still had ample stocks, so resisted a 15% off offer from Ocado because I didn't have enough storage space to put it in.

This week I opted for Sainsburys free midweek delivery, and at the 11th hour I got a mail from Ocado offering 15% off again for and order placed for this Tuesday or Wednesday.

I decided to let the Sainsburys order stand, and was glad I did, because it was 10 minutes late so I got a £10 off free voucher for next time.

By letting Sainsburys and Ocado compete for my custom I am getting free deliveries and discounts which are worth more than the Tesco clubcard vouchers I used to get.

I used Tesco deliveries for many years but they have got complacent and lost their competitive edge.

We have just had our weekly ASDA delivery and have been using the service for about nine months. This is the fourth time I have had to ring up to get the eggs knocked off the bill due to a cracked one and the second time I have rang about the rotten potatoes. At £3.50 delivery charge each week for a maximum of a £55 shopping bill I am seriously thinking of having a look at other supermarkets.
There is only me and my wife, both OAP's so we don't need a lot because we usually dine out at least twice a week.

You need to get your foodstocks organised into fortnightly, then the free delivery system will kick in.You need a big fridge and freezer, and use long life milk.
Some people will fill their freezer space with bread - wasted space - get a bread machine.
