I No Longer Live In East Lancs

Suprised to see no mention of this on here. Did anyone realise we are no longer residents of East Lancs but now reside in Pennine Lancashire ?

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

Burnley is 'Pendle' isn't it rather than 'Pennine' ? Is this another game of "Let's change it from Hyndburn to Accrington & District"?

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

why the hell cant they just leave well alone? Any more changes like this and we will be stuck with something we hate. It could be that the gov has decided to group areas together so that they can do away with county councils and set up super councils in the same way they have up here. Oh and it dosnt always work and can be more expensive.

Stanleymad 19-09-2007 14:28

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

Least its better than just plain east lancashire

lancsdave 19-09-2007 14:32

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

I don't think it's an official title. It appears to be used by the development agencies more than anyone, ie elevate, pathfinder etc.

It concerns me more that it is has the name Pennine, after all we know what other part of the country shares the pennines with us, lets just hope and pray we don't merge counties with them :)

Me I prefer boring old East Lancs. Would London change the name of the West End because it was "uncool" or not modern enough. Accrington Burnley Blackburn etc are in the east of the county!

But why is it? Does it really matter what its called? East lancashire is fine. WE are in lancashire and we are in the east area so its still east lancashire. Why bother?

If it doesn't matter why are people bothered about it being called Pennine Lancashire ? :)

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

On this basis does that then mean the west of Lancashire is Coastal Lancashire??

Yet another dig at Burnley. I suggest Tadah that you go and take yourself out for a walk round Accrington and have a good look round

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

Apparently it all goes back to this document....

http://www.elevate-eastlancs.co.uk/i...Lancashire.pdf

...which I believe we discussed some time ago. It is now being touted as, among other things, a monument to Tony Wilson. There is lots of talk about funding for the Weaver's Triangle in Burnley but precious little of anything for Hyndburn...oooops, sorry, Accrington and District - unless its in West Accrington. Sounds to me like old projects dressed up and relaunched in a shiny new suit.

I think you will fine i am not tada. Although i have met him. It was not a dig at burnley david its called a JOKE. Sorry if it struck a nerve.

Where exactly is South Lancashire these days? Until 1974 I would have said Warrington, where I work, but the Warringtonians suddenly found themselves transported to Cheshire. Widnes hopped into Cheshire too and Wigan and St Helens found themselves in Merseyside. Bolton and Leigh are in greater Manchester, as is Oldham, so does this mean that South Lancs is Chorley?

Anyway, if East Lancs is now Pennine Lancs, where the hell is the East Lancs Road (A580) going to?

mez 19-09-2007 21:23

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

sorry lancsdave i wasn't having a go at burnley, i quite like pennine lancashire.

Tin Monkey 19-09-2007 21:43

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

The title of Pennine Lancashire is something to boost the area in terms of tourism, etc. Other areas such as The Peak District and Lake District attract thousands of visitors every year, many of them who go there for the countryside, the walking and the views. East Lancashire has just as much to attract visitors as those places and I see no reason why this part of the county can't boost its flagging economy by moving toward tourism too.

Pennine Lancashire has some of the most beautiful countryside in the north of England, with some of the best walking too. Did you know that there are more footpaths per square mile in Pendle than anywhere else in England?

I often walk on the West Pennine Moors around Darwen and I am constantly impressed by the beautiful scenery. Let's not knock our beautiful part of the county, simply because we haven't understood the reasons behind the new name.

Good point actually. Doesn't Chorley class itself as Central Lancashire along with Preston ?

WillowTheWhisp 19-09-2007 22:19

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

Maybe Lancashire hasn't got a bottom if Chorley is central and most points south are in other counties.

Lancashire - the bottomless county.

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

Just as Yorkshire has no South Riding

WillowTheWhisp 20-09-2007 04:56

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

Ah but that's because 'riding' means 'one third part of' so you can't have four thirds! Not that anybody seems to refer to the Ridings any more even though geographically they do still exist.

SPUGGIE J 20-09-2007 14:30

Re: I No Longer Live In East Lancs

Since when did tykes learn to count.;)

There are so many areas that are being changed that eventually the original designation may get lost. Saying that though they did get shut of Rutland but brought it back. Do people still use Salop in their area i wonder, or Shropshire? Just a thought as it is getting more and more confusing

So anything I sent to my mum would be;

Huncoat
Accrington
Pennine Lancashire
Lancashire
