Pickpocket ??

Ok, maybe I am being neurotic here.

Went across to Ossymills today, as colleagues told me was a new clothes franchise in there, with fairly up-to-the-minute-goods. Yes, was rather good and did purchase a little silver cardigan number..being facile like.

Whilst I was looking around a family with a child, dashing around on a scooter ! Mother and baby, maybe two teenagers were close .. not the most desirable, if you know what I mean.

Young son (early twenties maybe) addresses me and asks me what colour I use on my hair as he thought it rather lovely .. Huh !!! for heaven's sake, I'm 64 .. and colour I put on 2 weeks ago washed out ! Was a little taken aback and meekly answered "Sorta Red Violet".

Couldn't sort this out for a while, just not normal behaviour is it ? Being flattered and chatted up by a young, lean, handsome 20 something.?

My bag is quite open and make-up bag was visible on top. (luckily purse hidden in the depths of this Pandora's carrier)

Gotta' thinking after .. this is the way I got conned in Spain couple of years ago at the market. Friendly Spaniard (that is unusual) comments to me what a lovely day, whilst partner in crime pinches me purse.

Feel certain this would have been a similar episode ... so I think beware of any strange attentions to your goodselves whilst out shopping.

Sure I am not wrong, will have a word with security tomorrow but need to share my thoughts and see if you agree and just tell you all to take care. x

Surprised that kid on scooter hadn't been told to stop scooting. They do have security bods on duty don't they?

You're probably right, it sounds like they were trying to distract you whilst one of them nicked your purse.

Thanks Willow for endorsing what I thought, been on my mind all night .. and have convinced myself this lad was a decoy. The child on the scooter I encountered mucking around with the jewellery .. she quickly threw something back on the stand.. there again kids do do this, don't they? so wouldn't be fair to say she was in the process of pocketing something. Just, well ya' know .. instincts like.

Wasn't 'til I was walking back across to my building that I had all these thoughts or would have mentioned it at the time to security... gosh, I'm slow.

Anyway, even if I am wrong about all this, this is what they do .. so please folks be aware.

I know G-C, but us women do get distracted though when faced with rails of desirable garments, don't we ? Even though we KNOW the safety rules... tuck bag under yer arm.

When my grandma used to come down to London to see me, she had a special pair of knickers with a pocket in them. Her money was safe but she did get some funny looks in the middle of Marks and Spencers in Oxford Street when she tried to pay!

By the way she wasn't a dotty old woman, but an attractive glamourpuss in her early sixties.

It would need to be a loud din these days with all the musak you get subjected to in some shops.

Hang on a minute here, perhaps it wouldn't have hurt any of you gentlemen to have reassured our Katie here that she was still desirable to young attractive men, but no, you all immediately agreed that he was faking it! :D

Although I am inclined to agree about the young lad's motive. I find it a sad sign of the times that a lady cannot accept a compliment without thinking that there is some ulterior motive. He may have just been making a genuine observation about Katex's stunning hair colour.....:D but I doubt it

Hehehehe.... I'd have said " SOD OFF...... I DO NOT DYE MY HAIR...." :D

Re: Pickpocket ??

One thing struck me about your post, Kate, you said your bag is "open". I have several handbags and they all have very secure zips, plus zipped compartments inside. I am very wary about having anything stolen so the bag is always zipped up and carried on my shoulder with my hand firmly over the zipped top. When using an ATM (always inside the bank, if possible, not on the street) I always have the bag round to my front - pressed up against the machine - and keep my hand over the card slot until it pops out, then over the money slot until the cash arrives. I've heard so many horror stories I'm like a walking Fort Knox - or I'm just paranoid.

I was in asda about 10 years ago 2 weeks before xmas and over the tannoy came an announcement 'Beware of pickpockets and thieves are in the store. Keep hold of your wallet and purses'. Since then i dont use a purse unless im going to work or going out for the night i keep my money in my jeans pockets - front ones. Could you imagine anyone trying to get into them pockets without me feeling them? :D

Aaah, a true friend .. did cross my mind too Gayle, but I am a realist. Discussed at work with my younger colleagues today and I did suggest what you have . .. Hmmmph, they nearly wet themselves laughing .. one had to run to the toilet very quickly to stem the flow.

Lettie: Worked this one out .. put semi-permanent colour on three weeks ago and only lasts 15 washes approx... as I wash my hair every day, guess had completely gone .. so yes, could have said what you suggested anyway. Maybe, I shouldn't bother after all, and save myself some money.. :D

Westender: 'Tis a bag with three compartments, one in the middle has a zip in which I put mobile 'phone, headache tablets .. important things like. The other two are open, but there is a flap that can be brought over to fasten with a stud... unfortunately, always far too much in there to be viable. My work bag contains everything but the kitchen sink .. would be interesting to make a list for myself, (and interesting to hear what other ladies take).

Lancsdave: That sounds like really 'sound' information, thanks for that. Like Willow am curious to know what a purse alarm looks like.

Stanleymad: You correct ... could only drop in in my lunchtime, so those hours waste of space as far as I am concerned.

Bernie: If you get chance to go and, if possible, grab me one will you?

Re: Pickpocket ??

It sounds very suss to me Kate, I always have my hand over the zip of my bag, last year I was followed by a middle age women and what could have been her daughter around Woolworths, I was pushing the pram, it was near Christmas so I did several circuits to check and they stayed with me anyway I got hold of my bag and turned to look at them and didn't move until they walked away, it was quite unnerving but I couldn't prove they were following me.

These distraction thefts are ver hard to handle
ifyou spot them you won't catch them as the team will have your goods away before you can give chasel.
