Best of luck to all our 'troop's' wherever they are serving, your cause is just and much needed to bring some form of equality and stabillity to these troubled times and places.

Am in the same position as yourself - son in Afghanistan. I am very lucky in that he was allowed home for five days (birth of his first child) and we got to see him while he was in UK.

The thing that worries me about serving soldiers is the ridiculous system we have where, if they are wounded, they can only claim for the first three wounds i.e. if you have both your legs blown off and both your arms and are brain damaged you can only claim for three of those injuries (or your next of kin). An E-petition has just closed today and is being sent to the Prime Minister to request fair treatment for wounded soldiers - after all, very recently, a civilian secretary working for the army got £245,000 pounds for repetitive strain injury to her thumb! (you have two thumbs and you don't type with your thumb anyway - do you?) I know from my son that the soldiers in his regiment felt very down about this payout - they felt it really told them where they were in the greater scheme of things!

I hope your son is safe in Afghanistan and comes home to you soon (about Easter I think).

Good luck and a safe return to your son, and to all those serving.

Re: Good luck lads

Reading a piece by Michael Yon today in which he writes that the courage of the British soldier under fire goes unsung and British soldiers have told him that recognition at home rarely happens. Now there's a sad statement.

I found one item very interesting. He was visiting with the 4 Rifles in Basra at the time and was informed that they get a great deal of moral support from one English lady. She sends handwritten letters frequently to the group. Expensive bottles of scotch to any wounded, plus a handwritten letter to each. Handwritten letters to the families of wounded or killed. The lady in question is Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. She is Royal Colonel of 4 Rifles, so I suppose you could say that comes with the territory. But the fact that she takes the time to write all by hand says something positive about her. After all, she could easily have some secretary type a note and just sign it. She has also invited soldiers and their families to her home.

Good Luck safe return to all the lads and lasses serving overseas.

Re: Good luck lads

Don’t people use the thumb on the space bar? Not that that warrants such a payout.
