Guns on Accy's Streets
The other night, early evening, a couple of lads in their teens were walking up the our street on the opposite side to us. They'd be something in the region of 15 to 18 years old at a guess. They were wearing the usual kind of sports gear with baseball caps. One lad pulled out a gun and started brandishing it at his mate. It looked real enough to me as they turned the corner, the "armed" lad still waving his weapon around.
The question Im posing is...What should I have done? Should I have confronted them? Should I have rang the police?(I had a mind to but would I have been an overreacting old ******) Was I right to do nothing?(wind my neck back in and pretend I saw nothing) Maybe it was just horseplay I dont know, its been on my mind a little bit for a day or two now. I'd like to hear some views on how you would have reacted |
Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
I for one wouldn't have confronted them, what if it was real? They wouldn't think twice about using it, think I would have rang the police. Better to be safe than sorry IMHO.

Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
Maybe I should have gotten in touch with the police, you know the type of thing that goes through your head. My conscience and I are at odds.:)

Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
I would just like to add that the fact I didnt ring the police wasnt due to a lack of confidence in them. I think they would have taken it very seriously, maybe had the helicopter up, the armed policeunit out, police dogs out and likely cordoned off some of the local streets all for what was maybe just two lads havin the crack...all be it a rather stupid crack in light of the times

Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
Would have taught the lads a lesson if it had happened like that. They act like prats should be shown up for what they are!!!
|
Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
Personally I would have rung the police, I certainly wouldn't dare confront them. But even if you had rung the police they could have been long gone before they actually got round to going and having a look.
And people wonder why i'm thinking of moving away.:( |
Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
To be honest its like that all over the UK because this country hasn't got its law in order, if i could i'd move abroad as many people are doing.

Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
I would have pulled my gun out and bust a cap in his chav ass!
|
Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
The police would have run round to face the danger off for you with the speed of a constipated rocking horse. If you challanged them you could have been on the receiving of something nasty. There is a lot of prancing around by the teens and there ego will have them running around with a gun. Sometimes see note and stay stum helps.

Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
I would have phoned the police. I don't know if they would have responded quickly but I certainly wouldn't have confronted the lads.

Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
No Country at present can offer anyone perfect safety from these type's, the witness protection programme in the USA, is as good as it gets, but there are members of the law enforcement agency that can be 'bought as money talks all languages. Discretion is the greater part of valour, "Grassing" is the most unforgivable offence wihin the criminal fraternity. Each person values their life in different degrees, a case for ones own concience.

Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
I think I would have called the police though what they'd have done I dont know, it frightens me that todays youth think its clever to carry a weapon, or actually feel they need to for protection.

But I'm so frightened, and as a parent torn. I am torn because I have taught them not to fight. Taught them that fighting never solves anything and they are very good boys. But I feel probably because I have taught them proper values that somewhere along the lines they will probably come un-stuck because of me teaching them this. Who said parenting was easy eh?? :( Do you let them go on the streets and fight like hooligans to gain place in today's society?? OR do you teach them properly and hope to god other parents will be teaching theirs the same so that society will finally get " normality " if thats what we can call it?? :( |

Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
the title of this thread sent shivers down my spine, we have 2 girls and worry about what the world will be like when they grow up, i would have called the police for what good it would have done , the lads would have been long gone by the time the police arrived(if ever!)if it was a real gun accrington has obviously followed suit with most of the uk , gun culture is very frightening indeed.:(

Despite your fears, slinky, please remember that things have been infinitely worse in the past. Even a cursory reading of English history will confirm that. |
Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
I would have called the coppers, Bonnyboy - even if I knew they would not arrive on the scene with speed. They need to be alerted to all such incidents. It may well be that the gun toting youth lives in or near your neighborhood and may already be known to the police.

Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
As a responsible and legitimate owner of RIF's (Replica Imitation Firearm) this sickens me. The sport I partake in, Airsoft (UK Airsoft news. for more info) has been under a lot of light from the government lately, mainly because of scallies with cheap "market stall springers" roaming the streets with their rifs. Which is what this sounds like.
As of october 1st of this year the Violent Crimes Reduction Act (VCRA) states that the sale of RIF's to people who do not have a legitimate use for them is illegal. It is also illegal for anyone to brandish a RIF in a public place. if the police were called an armed response unit would have been dispatched and would have been on the scene as quickly as they could. Having dealt with the Armed police on several occasions (through the shooting club I am part of) I am quite sure of this. The thing is though, the armed police will deal with any RIF as if it w as a real firearm. So if you called them saying "I have seen a youth with a gun on xxx street" they would be prepared to deal with the situation using deadly force if necessary, which is how we get these "Kid shot dead by the police" news stories... |

If these so called kids didnt go around brandishing weapons in the first place then there would be no need for an armed response , I do see what your saying , but if these kids want to play with grown up things and mis use them the way they do then let them have the armed response on them , see how clever they are then . and if these kids had nothing to hide they would have nothing to fear. I ha 4 dhildren and worry each time one of em goes out , up town for a night out , or even just walkin to thier mates .. unfortunately its that easy these days . You dont even have to antagonise but can still be harmed just because some mindless thugs want to have a bit of so called fun . |
Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
I would have called the police on 999: followed if safe at some distance and maybe took a pic or video on my mobile:
In fact I would still contact the police ( you never know ) they may turn up there again or be known to the police: If we sit back and do not stand up to this kind of scum , they will win all the time: That said I would not be a witness ( not again ) I would tell the police and they can sort it: |
Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
Sounds like you had a bad experience when you were a witness. Is it something you can tell us about?
|
Re: Guns on Accy's Streets
Not me personally but a friend of mine did.... lets just say he/she was treated worse than than the person that had done the crime:
so I personally would think twice before I offered to help the police or rather cps... same pot really I guess: |
