Big Brother Has Finally Arrived.

Taken from the BBC Ceefax news pages:
Information about all landline and mobile phone calls made in the UK MUST be logged and stored for a year under new laws.

Data about calls made and received will also be available to 652 public bodies, including the police and councils.

The Home Office said the content of the calls and text would not be read and insisted the move was vital to tackle serious crime and terrorism.

But critics said it was another example of Britain’s “surveillance society”.

Someone please remind me again that we are not sleepwalking, nay galloping, towards becoming a Police State. Because it sure looks like it to me.

What the hell are the playing at doing this? The cower at human rights when thrust at them yet sneak in something under I no doubt is anti terror laws!! Ok might eventually lead to convictions but only because it holds all and sundry. is this to save the hassle of asking for official sanction of line tapping?

Re: Big Brother Has Finally Arrived.

Another media hyped story. Phone companies have always kept records, all they have done now is put a legal time limit on it.

Re: Big Brother Has Finally Arrived.

Well I didn’t vote them in. Not that the other lot would be any different.

Using the same tactic of fighting serious crime and terrorism as an excuse the government wanted photo ID cards for everyone, then sought DNA samples from everyone and now this.

Big Brother is coming and no one is doing anything about it.

Keeping records is one thing and of course we knew that phone companies kept records. But that is a far cry from keeping the actual content of text messages and phone calls.

The Home Office said the content of the calls and text would not be read and insisted the move was vital to tackle serious crime and terrorism.
Meaning that they could be read if the desire was there.

Re: Big Brother Has Finally Arrived.

I am not saying that it can't be done but I find it very hard to fathom the amount of space needed to hold 12 months of all telephone calls made to and from all landlines and mobiles in the UK.

Basic data of to whom and when yes I can accept, the actual calls, very hard to comprehend. Texts maybe.

The 652 bodies will be the local authorities, different police forces and the equivalent govt. agencies.

As Lancsdave said I believe this is hyped to stir up the libertarians.

As no calls have been used in court as evidence, apart from ones where a warrant has been issued to put a wire on, to me this ads further evidence that this is a scaremongering story.

When it says details will be kept I'm pretty sure it means date, time, ect. No way could they keep details of content. That would be some storage requirement :D

File compression has progressed in leaps and bounds over the years so the vast amounts of space required are not quite as vast. So has the size of digital storage space and the speed of access. The files are getting smaller and the storage has been getting larger. Just look at the hard drives that you can buy these days. 500GB seems to be the norm these days and it is no larger than the old 100MB hard drive.

Take a wav file of a record at around 35MB - that can get compressed down as an MP3 file of about 3MB max. Text files are even easier to compress with even better ratios.

A telephone call is analogue sound just like a record. A text message is just like a saved file in a word processor.

It is only a matter of time before this stored ‘evidence’ will be accepted in a court of law without a warrant being issued.

The government hasn’t just put a legal time limit on it lancsdave, they are legitimising what is already happening before there is a leak or someone blows the whistle.

Precisely they already have the information they require. As with everything else I have nothing to hide so therefore nothing to fear. In this day and age only Big Brother techniques will fight the morons ruining the world.

Exactly if it helps to catch one terrorist then carry on with it!!!

jambutty 01-10-2007 22:59

Re: Big Brother Has Finally Arrived.

Well you carry on living in your own blinkered little world and choose to believe what you want to believe. But come the day when you will have to seek permission from some official when you want to fart, hopefully you will remember that it all started with ‘it is to help prevent serious crime and terrorism’ and ‘I have nothing to hide’.

SPUGGIE J 01-10-2007 23:06

Re: Big Brother Has Finally Arrived.

I am not blinkered but wary. If it all comes to pass it will affect my daughter and here kids more than me. If it gets too bad I could always ****** of to some far away Island and live in tranquility. As I cannot I am stuck with what is dealt here. Well that and the fact I cant afford to ****** off at the moment. There are places worse than here so it is good but it does seem to be heading the way of these countries.

They have been accessing ohone call's round the world for years, all the major powers have monitoring stations, we have Cheltnham. So now they've found a way into the 'mobile system'. I think they call it progress jambutty:D give me the good old days, no phones no telly and NO BIG BROTHER.

WillowTheWhisp 02-10-2007 06:49

Re: Big Brother Has Finally Arrived.

Anyone who wants to listen in on me waffling on the phone is quite welcome to do so. I have nothing to fear because I have nothing to hide. It's the same with CCTV. I don't mind them filming what I do in town because those CCTVs can also catch criminals. For all the boring footage of me going to M&S, Woollies and Boots there will be a couple of minutes of yobbos mugging a little old lady and if their actions are caught on film and that leads to them being caught then it's worth it.

Likewise if keeping phone conversations or even just records of who called who and when leads to prevention of repeats of the suicide bombings and helps to save people's lives then I have absolutely no objection to anyone listening in on what I have to say. It will bore them to tears but that's their problem not mine.

500GB hard drives? Crikey I am behind the times! We bought a 400GB external drive last year to share at and it still has oodles of space on it.
:D

I'm with you on this one Willow. It doesn't bother me in the slightest, same with the DNA thing. I have nothing to hide and in the long run if it help catch criminals & terrorists then i'm all for it.

Don’t forget that RAF station in Yorkshire, the name of which I can never remember, where the Yanks have a large monitoring facility.

No it means exactly what it says JB lad. They wont be read.

And anyhow if you have nothing to hide then whats your problem. Are you a terrorist? A bore bomb now thats a new one.

You are talking about Fylingdales.

The place that I am talking about is Menwith Hill 8 miles west of Harrogate. Jeeves (or Ask as it is known now) is so helpful at times.

Try hanging round the perimeter fence with a camera. Like as not you’ll be visited by two very large snowdrops in a Land Rover suggesting that you move on.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Menwith_Hill

I can’t and you know it.

But then neither can you prove that they won’t be read and you know that too.

So that was rather a daft challenge.

The past record of the Home Office has been such that I wouldn’t trust them not to read and listen.

I fail to see your argument

Perhaps if the real culprits had been videoed then the innocent would not have been wrongfully convicted.

I thought big brother was already here after all they can pinpoint your precise movements via satalite and phones already. I think they already store all the infomation on phones, this is just the first step to the government being able to watch our every move and to make it legal in order to beable to use it in a court of law.
