I got my slow cooker out of summer storage ready to make some today but spent most of the day on here
You are better buying your own ingredients seperately - that way you know you arent getting raggy bug bitten bits they take off veg before sale

The fact I've had to put my fire on and the condensation on the car windscreen, I like winter though especially just coming in out of the cold, fire on, brew and broth/soup.

I know..it was all fresh veg chopped up in realy tiny pieces,,..the celery smelt lovely while it was cooking..The leeks are very dear just now though

Well soon be time to make oudles of nice thick home made soup. Will stick to the ribs and I can feeze it. Even I cant eat a gallon of soup in one sitting.

Looking at my garden is the way I can tell Winter's on its way. My pampas grass has about 40 plumes, all white and fluffy, the pyrocanthas are full of red, yellow and orange berries and the virginia creepers are deep blood red. It all looks beautiful now but I know that in a few weeks the pampas plumes will be bedraggled and grey, the birds will have stripped off all the berries and the creepers will be a load of bare twigs on the fences. :(

What sort of things do you make in it Margaret?

I have a slow cooker that I bought off Amazon when they had them really cheap. I used it a few times last year, but could never get anything really nice out of it. I tend to make stews/broths in a cast iron pot (Le Creuset, expensive but worth every penny) and then either freeze or refrigerate it, to eat over the next few days.

Any slow cooker recipes would be appreciated :)

Beef stew, broth, soup, chilli-con-carne and bean casseroles(for vegetarian son)
Things that need long cooking are fine for slow cooking, with the added advantage that cheap meat cuts come out tender. The main thing to remember with slow cooking is that no liquid gets steamed off, so if you put too much liquid in you are stuck with it. Another tip - put the meat at the bottom below the veg so that it gets more of the heat.

Thanks for the info and the link. I think my problem was that everything seemed a little watery, which as you say is because nothing gets steamed off.

I'm going to give it another go, as it was nice to come home from work to the smell of cooking food. :)

That's true.... I have to leave mine for 11 hours or more while I'm at work, so I think I was afraid that it would boil dry. It's pretty good though, as when it finishes cooking it just keeps the food warm until you turn it off.
I'm going to make something in it next week. :)

I did go away ... I was away all day ... rode my motorcycle up to Hungry Man Lake ... did some fishing ... gorgeous ... the leaves on the maples are turning ... deer, wild turkey, pheasant, chipmunks all over the place ... Now I will go away again.:D:D:D

just seen this - persevere TM. paris uses a slow cooker regular for chicken broth, lamb hotpot,beef stew etc n they are great.

i love my slow cooker too, when my mum bought me it, I read the instructions and it actually said to use slightly less liquid than in the recipe...which I do.....YUM :D

The snow has arrived, accumulations in the foothills of Alberta and the Cypress Hills in Saskatchewan .... that's the bad news. Good news is, Canada is a huge country and those places are a long way from here where it will be another beautiful day, sunny, with temps in the mid 20s.

OOOOOOOOWWWW Granny... just seen this thread ... you got my tastebuds going now:eek:havent had broth for soooooo long now .. my mum used to make the most delicious broth even when i had left home and had a family of my own she used to make panfulls of it and bring it round for me ... and since she passed away i have tried many times to get it to her standard but although its ok its never quite the same . But think i will get that pan out and have another go .. :D:D

Well the slow cooker is out of the cupboard and all the ingredients are prepared for tomorrow. In the morning I'll stick it all in the pot and leave it to cook while I'm at work. Hope it works out ok, or I'll be going hungry ;)

I always think broth is best warmed up the day after ..its all thick and sticks to the ribs,, as my mum used to say:D

Well, got home around 8-ish and the smell of chicken casserole greeted me at the door. I don't think it's just right yet, but it was pretty tasty and there's plenty left for tomorrow. I could do with thickening the gravy a bit, but I don't want to add artificial thickeners/flavourings. A little tinkering required. ;)
