Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
ARE PERFUMES MAKING YOU SICK?
This is my pet project of the moment :D It is sort of a sequel to 'what are they spraying?' and the effects of the smoking ban ie. public venues using air poisoners/fresheners. Are you affected too? and are you doing anything about it? |
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
Well I guess I'm safe because I use natural cleaning products from Melaleuca, with no nasty chemicals in them, and use natural perfume oils made from natural substances and no alcohol. I fell in love with Arabian perfumes when on holiday and I started using a natural deodorant earlier this year too so I think I'm about as eco friendly as I can be. Unfortunately Mimi, me eldest daughter, still likes her squirty stuff and I find it a bit overpowering. Maybe I should ban her from the house? ;)
|
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
That makes quite frightening reading. Now I know why you have switched your washing products.
|
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
I'm going to try those nuts even though my current washing liquid is eco friendly.
|
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
i havn't been able to use perfume for years nor scented deoderants, i stopped using the plug in air fresheners some 5 yrs ago, use the same wash powder that i have for years, & simple soap & products, i cannot use anything with a slight flowery or perfume smell at all, its part of my everlasting allergies.
|
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
It started a while ago when I found that Tesco Multipurpose cleaner melted my rubber bathmat :D
|
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
I have had allergy tests (cats dust etc) which came out negative. Chemical sensitivity isnt testable

Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
Have gone into this subject on many occasions in different threads and thanks Margaret, pulled that article down from your post on the other thread.
I have taken it into work for ammunition because I think the ladies I work with believe I make a fuss about nothing. Oh yes, and some of the aftershaves too gentlemen. My son sometimes wears one called Fahrenheit and have told him is b .. awful, but replies "Well, the ladies seem to appreciate it" ! No answer to that one, is there ? It is really difficult, because even though my complaint is taken in good spirits, it is taken as a personal criticism to their choice in perfume. Now I like perfumes, but some are so pungent it makes some of my working days unbearable. Within ten minutes of one of them walking into the office wearing one of these offensive perfumes, symptoms develop .. initially sneezing, then coughing, feeling so sick my stomach literally turns, can literally taste, smell on my cloths, flu symptoms, the list appears to be endless. Then within an hour of leaving the office, these symptoms have disappeared... can't wait to grab a fag .. :D They have the habit of reapplying at lunch time too ... :( Don't even mention those dangly tree things in cars either .. particularly Vanilla. Someone used to put one in a pool car at work, which I used now and then for business trips .. immediately goes in the bin. One particular occasion only got to the railway bridge at Church and had to pull over because thought I might vomit in the car. Overcame it, but had to drive for a few hours with all the windows open ! Yes, I am with you on this Margaret. |
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
Well Neil you certainly gave me a challenge there .( I have no qualifications in chemistry)
Googling came up with so much info that this post would fill the page with web addresses. Fortunately I found one site which which is jampacked with links to scientific info. I spent 2 hours fast reading it and tried some of the many links, and didn't even get to scan half of it. If you have a week to spare you might be able to look at all the info provided EHN's General Links / F The canadian Lung Association had some useful sites too - where you can watch videos. Seems that 'Fragrance Free' hospitals and workplaces are being set up there. (Who'd have thought that the canadians would be aware of such a thing as air pollution - you know what I mean - having all those lovely trees) The New Brunswick Lung Association - Workplaces If after reading some of this ENORMOUS amount of info, you want to reduce the perfumes/poison in your home - try this link Guide to Less Toxic Products |
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
Very grateful for all the info. Margaret, endorses all that I experience .. almost believed myself, at one stage, that it was in my imagination and a raving neurotic. x
Would love to show these to Health and Safety at work, but don't think I would be very popular .. need to keep my job for another 2 years at least. :( Well, might just show it them .. they need to be kept up-to-date on what could be a future ban, eh ? :D |
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
I know that you suffer too - hope that this info makes others think twice when buying such stuff.
I recently stocked up on bath products - Sanctuary Spa creamy body wash (with Sandalwood and Patchouli oils) Botanics Deep Clean Foam (with rice bran protein & honey) - not cheap!!! - now I see they have sodium laureth sulphate  I will boil up some soapnuts (cheaper) and put these fancy products away to use as prezzies (for people who don't know better ;) ) |

Interesting to note that the author of the original article in Margaret's first post isn't exactly unbiased; he /she would appear to own a busines prodcing these fragrance free products. "Tiger flag natural Perfumery "......

Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
I find that the oil based type perfumes don't bother me. It's the sprayed on and alcohol based ones which seem to be a problem. Somebody told me it had something to do with 'particulates' but I don't claim to be able to understand that. It seems like it's the smells you can taste which are the worst culprits. Of course not everyone is affected and the people who aren't think that those of us who are are just being a bit loopy.

That'll give my daughter a perfect excuse not to do any dusting. I never use those sort of sprays though. I used all Melaleuca products and prefer to put the stuff on the duster rather than spray it onto the furniture.

Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
After all the websearching I have done lately, I have binned a lot of cleaning products. I have ordered some positively chemical free toiletries.
(but I am only half way down a bottle of genuine Chanel no5 perfume and just cant bring myself to throw it out:() |

Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
Just a tag-on to this discussion. Last week in Blackpool, myself, Mez and the gang had a ride down to Cleveleys on the tram. Young man gets on during return journey absolutely stinking of some sort of aftershave. My stomach was heavily gurgling and lungs wheezing, and couldn't wait for the journey to end. Mez, on the other hand, was going the shade of a gooseberry and I was ready to get out the sick bag for her.
We had to cut short our journey, and walk the rest of the way to the hotel. Just a reminder to folks if you are going to be in close proximity to other people, please do not douche yourself with your sickening fragrances. I would never dream of wearing perfume if travelling publicly, going to the theatre, etc. (except small amount if I were being escorted by someone who may get close to me later :D ) There again, difficult, 'cause you usually wear it for other people don't you ? Or do you ? What difference do you think it makes to other people as to your attraction ? |
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
Tend to wear perfume because I like it nothing to do with trying to attract somebody. Having said that I don't douse myself in it just a discreet spray.

I think you will find that chemical free fragrances won't have the nasty effect, and they are cheaper, but need applying more often because the don't contain 'fixatives'

Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
Well as someone who does not wear perfume:DI have to say that some womens smelly has a very bad effect on me, I am allergic to some but not all perfumes, they like take my breathe away, but for the wrong reasons:D altough I can wear some aftershave's Black Suede from Avon is okay at the moment
|
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
I haven't tried the non-chemical perfumes in that link but the ones I like are non-spray non-chemical and much longer lasting than the chemical spray ones. I think it's the evaporating of the chemicalness which causes me problems. The ones I use seem to last all day.
The problem is with people who tend to douse themselves is that they become so used to the smell that they can't actual detect it and so they use more and mor ein order to be able to smell it. If they changed to something else for a while it would be apparent to them and they wouldn't use so much. Either than or they just have no sense of smell and have no idea what they are subjecting other people to. I love perfumes. I love shops which sell smelly stuff (like Lush) but Busman can't stand it and has to wait outside. |
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
I feel sick everytime i walk past someone who wears lynx....it ruddy disgusting!!!!!

Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
That's just the advertiser's dream. It's like that "Splash it all over!" nonsense. I worked with someone who reeked of Brut so much that if he just walked in the room it knocked me sick.
Yesterday my daughter sprayed a perfume on herself in the room where I was and it started me coughing and wheezing. I use roll-on perfume oils and never have a problem. They last longer on the skin too. |
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
Certain perfumes and aftershaves give me bad headaches and i'm the same with detergents as a couple of you it makes me sneeze too!
I like musky smells and lavender but only a little squirt! |

BBC NEWS | Scotland | Edinburgh, East and Fife | Perfume 'risk to unborn babies' So I repeat this link http://www.lesstoxicguide.ca/index.asp? |
Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
Nothing conclusive in the report.
I thought perfumes were mainly alcohol based. That aside, does it not evaporate on the skin, can’t see it being absorbed into the bloodstream. |

Re: Are Perfumes Making You Sick?
I resurrect this thread to report that my extreme sensitivity to inhaled petrochemical products appears to be waning.:)
I recently made a rare visit to a supermarket to buy dishwasher products and walked the detergent aisle without gasping. I now use those nasty planet destroying chemicals to wash dishes.:o I have had to resort to this because of my loss of grip in my left hand. The vitamin therapy I have been using for 7 months is curing me gradually. I'm glad I never binned that Chanel No5 :D |
