Rat Horror
It seems that there is a rat invasion in Accrington, residents of Owen Street, Whalley Road, Hood Street and Dowry Street are being plagued with them. One resident says that they have been sharing her fruit bowl. That is gross and another one said one was sitting on her windowsill. Residents say there are a number of reasons for the increase including the large number of take-aways on Whalley Road and lack of action by Network Rail. Think I will avoid the take-aways after reading this!!!

Re: Rat Horror
Maybe I am being a tad dense here but Network Rail being part of the problem?:confused::confused: The take aways I can understand that I cant. Rats once established are nigh on impossible to be exterminated. Will take forever to get it under control this "epidemic" and will be expensive. Would it also mean a change in refuse collection as well.

They reckon you're never more than 6ft away from one now, don't they? I have only ever seen one and that was whilst I was driving over Whinney Hill tip a couple of years ago. Great big hairy thing it was, running from one side of the road to the other, but I coped because I was in my car. If I came face to face with one on the street or worse, at home, I would probably scream, wet myself, then pass out! |

Better off with ferrets or polecats as they could get in were the rats do. |
Re: Rat Horror
Spuggie think a lot of them come down from the railway tracks, I have seen quite a few when waiting for the train in Accrington. Lilly the thought of them makes me shiver don't know how I would cope with one taking fruit out of my fruitbowl!!!

A sound repelling gadget works like a pied piper in reverse- works for spiders and mozzies too

Re: Rat Horror
So what's the council doing about this? When I was rodent control operative for Accrington Corporation in the early 70's, myself and my colleague went round every manhole in town baiting them with poison. That certainly did for plenty of the little blighters! Don't they do this anymore?

Re: Rat Horror
Cats can cope with smallish rats but big beggars can stand up to a moggie and win.

I would have thought a wheelie bin with a shut lid would be rat proof. |

Rats don’t need to lift the lid. They just chew through the base.
Given time a rat can chew through bricks, cement, concrete and even metal. Now if you had a cat this size no rat would stand a chance. To give you some idea of how big Spike was, that cabinet was 12 inches tall. |

Re: Rat Horror
i got chatting to a council pest control fella (like you do) about the rats and he said the problem had got worse since the bin collections changed to fortnightly...... coincidence??? erm.....no!

Re: Rat Horror
We have had fortnightly bin collections for a couple of years time now in Ossy.

Re: Rat Horror
We do have rats in Kingston, but they only appear after a heavy rain puts a lot of strain on the storm sewers. Our garbage is picked up once a week, along with the blue and gray boxes. The rats don't seem to bother it, probably because there is too much competition from the other garbage lovers, the racoons, skunk (a malodorous rat) and the squirels (rats with bushy tails.) However, we are starting to have a problem with Fishers in the city ... these are rats with attitudes and a black belt in the martial arts who fight pit bulls for fun.
