I always thought big issue sellers only sold them until they got back on their feet and got a job and somewhere to live. Shes been selling them for ages well it seems like ages - years

Does that mean margaret that everytime you buy a magazine from the news agents or whsmith or asda etc that they are begging?

You are paying for the magazine - you are getting something for your money. They pay big issue 70p for every magazine that they have. You pay £1.40 they get to keep the other 70p for paying for the next lot of magazines and to pay for food, roof over their head etc.

Big Issue

The sellers have a code of conduct which they have to sign to be a seller. If they dont adhere to it they lose their badge and are banned from selling it.

Thats actually a good point Jen. The other thing is, I would rather give my money to someone who is TRYING to help themselves, rather than just sit there with a sign saying " hungry, need food, help feed my dog " etc....

I agree that the principles of 'helping the homeless to help themselves' is a good one.
I think that it is being abused by people who are not homeless

She's not just your average homeless - jobless type. She's a multi-site retailer. See her on the bus to Manchester alot. Sometimes she's selling outside Marks and Spencers at Prestwich, other times she carries on to Chorlton Street bus station (going home I think).
Fair play, at least she's making an effort. She must be the only Big Issue seller in the country that has a 30 mile commute to work.:D

At least she's not a scumbag, pastie eating, tracksuit wearing, smoking and swering baby machine, like most other people on Broadway.

I'm actually talking myself into liking her now!

I don't think anybody suggested they didn't like her it is just her voice goes right through you. Well done to anybody prepared to stand there in all weathers for the little money she gets.
