Loo Rolls

1 Attachment(s)
There isn’t a right way or a wrong way to hang loo rolls, just your way.

I prefer mine so that the drop paper is nearest the wall.

I have a tiny washroom 5 ft wide and 7ft 6 inches long and even that has a 2ft 6 inches by 3 ft chunk cut out in one corner, that incorporates a shower, sink, toilet and radiator so there ain’t a great deal of room. I’m pretty sure that you couldn’t swing a cat around inside. Not that I would ever dream of doing such a thing.

If the loo roll were hung the other way so that the drop paper was furthest away from the wall it would be too easy to end up with a pile of loo paper on the floor as I catch it with my arm or something and it all unrolls.

So the burning question of the day is, what’s your preferred way – close to the wall or furthest away from it?

Many profound thoughts come while one is on the flush. And why else does one take the seat of ease unless it is to utter crap?:D

I’m sorry that my topics do not meet with your approval. I wasn’t aware that I had to check with you before starting a thread to see if it meets with your requirements.

You will have to visualise this but my gesture would tell you that I can still draw a long bow with either hand.

Now do you possibly think that you could get back to the topic? I was trying to open a debate on domestic etiquette as it pertains to the humble loo roll.

Even though I stated earlier “There isn’t a right way or a wrong way to hang loo rolls, just your way.” I don’t think that that is correct. No doubt Mrs Bucket (pronounced bouquet) would know. I’ve got a vague idea (in full broad daylight this time) that there is a right way and a wrong way. Further more my way is the wrong way, I think.

Our loo roll holder sticks out at a right angle to the wall so ours goes on entirely differently. I don't bother about which way it rolls, whichever way it goes on first is how it stays.

Well done flashytart, Eric and Aleks, you have just proved conclusively that some people, if given the opportunity, will dive in and take a puerile dig with scant regard to the topic.

You were deliberately given the opportunity.

Hey up Jam, this is a serious topic, ignore the rest, when I moved into this house no bog roll holder.

It was the first thing I bought and because it didn't have a back plate I hung it with the paper away from the wall, however, (as you may know), I got a kitten, because of this my toilet roll now sits on the window sill because that darn cat has found out it can unravel toilet roll all over the bathroom!

:)

Of course it was a serious discussion. Some people have strong views on which way round the loo roll should be. Much in the same way as the differences of opinion about toilet seats – up or down.

It’s just that I knew some people would react in the way they did, especially if it was I who started the thread.

Actually I don’t care if people take my posts or topics seriously. They have that choice. What I do care about is sensible responses without all the back biting, back slapping and topic drifting that goes on.

However it does go to show that it is OK for some people to wind up others but when I do it, it is wrong.

A tad hypocritical perhaps?

Now we are getting somewhere.

Surely hotels will follow etiquette so the right way seems to be away from the wall.

But folded to a point? I can’t see the point of that, or rather I don’t want to go down that road.

You are quite correct Margaret , hotels do do this, think they do it away from the wall so guests can tear it easily and not waste too much, but the folding is just for presentation.

'Tis a serious question and one been asked many times, presume also by the manufacturers, after all difficult to ask how you use it,etc., isn't it ?..:D

As for me .. well, mine is on the floor at the moment. last holder dropped off .. mainly due to son and mates leaning on it to balance, whilst other hand was probably busy holding something else. I have bought a new one, at great expense, but has not been attached to tiles as yet, as do not know how to screw into tiles. New shower riser rail still waiting to be put up for same reason :( If it were up, would put next to wall, as looks neater.

Get a proper tile bit ( it's got a sharp point on it ) and put masking tape on the tile where you are going to drill to stop the drill bit from slipping.

West Ender 23-10-2007 17:35

Re: Loo Rolls

Never mind JB, I think it's a fascinating and under-valued topic. ;)

Now, on a practical note; if your loo-roll holder has a matching metal flap on top, as many hotel ones do, the only way you can hang the roll is away from the wall. If you do it the other way it will be caught on the edge of the drop-down flap, as it rolls, and will wrinkle and tear. I'm sure I don't have to point out the potentially dire consequences of using a sheet of wrinkled, torn loo-paper, we've all been there haven't we? Oh, well some of us have.

On a scientific note; you know how, sometimes, the perforations in your bog-standard (boom boom) 2-ply loo-roll don't quite match up? It only takes a centimeter out of line and you've got little bits of shredded paper where you gave a tug and only one lot of perforation worked. To cure this problem, hang the offending roll the other way (end facing the wall if it was formerly away from the wall) and, Hey Presto!, your little perforations will match perfectly.

Did you know that it is considered vulgar, in polite society, to use any other colour paper than white? If you want to show how very sophisticated you are where it really counts you should hang plain white paper and avoid pink, green or, particularly, multi-coloured squares of the Daily Mirror. The latter can leave a lasting impression on your guests.

Ooh, I could go on all night but I'll have to stop. Call of Nature. :D

Scared though .. might crack the tiles.

There is another problem too .. there are already holes in the tiles where the last one was .. quite deep. Friend (whose husband works for large Spanish manufacturer) told me to put grouting in rather than filler. Bought a tube, but doesn't come out of tube very well, so gave up on that one. Think it might have dried up or summat ?

Heard that you are best to put masking tape on tiles first before drilling .. everybody agree ?

Sorry if going off thread Jambutty, but is sortof related, and been dyeing to ask question for long time, but thought you might all think I am a helpless/thick woman like, and that would never do ..

That’s because the two sheets have got out of sync. You just have to unwrap one once round the roll and they should then line up OK.

When I managed a building I had those single sheet dispensers installed, and then the packs of sheets started going missing from a storage cupboard - they had to be put under lock and key - employees with a grudge often steal in order to get revenge.

I think that we should go back to the golden days of newspaper in the flush. I do believe that the almost universal decline in values and morality is directly linked the introduction of soft, even scented toilet tissue of various colors. If defecation is made more pleasant, people will spend too much time in the toilet, daydreaming about winning the lottery. And don't forget, the main reason that the French are inferior to the British is the bidet.

That's because there is little in life more satisfying or important than sitting on the throne with the morning paper and that first cup of coffee. It's as close to heaven as most of us will get.:D

Oh, dear another little peculiarity my daughter has inherited from me. I to have been known to change the loo roll round.
Mick has this bad habit of putting it the wrong way round and I have to change it.

I used to have a very old loo roll holder and as the years rolled by you could see the loo rolls getting narrower and narrower but going up in price. After all who would notice if the roll was just one eighth of an inch narrower than last week.

My current roll is 110mm wide and it would have been sliced from a great big long roll maybe 3000 mm wide to give 27 rolls with just 3mm wastage. If you reduced the roll width to 107mm you would get 28 rolls and virtually no wastage. Next year reduce the roll width by 4mm and you get 29 rolls. Who would notice?

However I have to deny the rumour that in order to contribute to the reduction of the carbon footprint Parliament is going to legislate so that users MUST use both sides.

Actually the loo roll, just like the toilet seat, has become a weapon in the battle of the sexes.

A few posts have pointed in that direction.

Thanks for taking the trouble to confirm my suspicions, since you took the trouble to measure the width of U K toilet paper I can report that once again everything in America is bigger :D :D, just measured the stuff in my bathroom and it measures 114 mm (4 1/2 inches) .
Now we need other foriegn correspondents to report in from maybe Australia and Spain etc. to see how they measure up ;) ;)
