Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
All girls aged 12 and 13 are to receive vaccinations against cervical cancer.
Schoolgirls in Year 8 will receive the jab in a programme which is expected to cost up to £100 million a year. There will also be a two-year "catch-up" campaign starting in autumn 2009 for girls aged up to 18, costing up to £200 million a year. This means girls aged 16 to 18 years (Years 12 and 13) will be offered the vaccine from autumn 2009. Girls aged 15 to 17 years (Years 11 and 12) will be offered the jab from autumn 2010. By the end of the catch-up campaign, all girls under the age of 18 should have been offered protection. looks like my daughter will have to wait till 2009!! wonder why they are not offering it all together?? anyway im all for it;) |
Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
What a brilliant idea, anything that reduces the chances of getting cancer can only be classed as a good move IMO.

Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
A very good idea in my opinion. The vaccine is aimed at killing the papilloma virus which causes 99% of cervical cancers. This will stop thousands of women developing cervical cancer in later life.

Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
i'm all for it too, it will be something similar to the rubella injection i think (if you know what i mean)

just wonderingAttachment 10244, will the need for smear tests to be needed for these young girls as they get older?
|
Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
Should think smear tests will still be done.

Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
What a fantastic idea :) As having experience of the big CC this has to be a massive step in the right direction of eradicating this.
I'm well chuffed :D Shame you can't have it when your older too |
Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs

Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
Anything that can keep this obscene disease at bay should be grabbed with both hands.Billions of pounds are being spent developing new drugs to extend the lives of suffering Cancer patients,if you can stop it before it happens it will save fortunes on treating sufferers. Once Cancer strikes there is no way of stopping it coming back('sometime). I personally started 20 years ago in the Colon, after the 2nd major operation 70% of it was removed. It came back 9 months later in the left Lung, part of that was removed. It is now in my right Lung close to the heart, and now undergoing lousy Chemotherapy treatment. This may have been avoided if I had not refused 'chemo' after my second Colon operation, but I did not feel strong enough. I have had jump through hoops to get now, as I refused it when it had more chance of success. The Oncologist was up against my wife, from then on it was no contest:D. The moral to the tale is refuse nothing that may save or extend your life.
This is not a sympathy seeking letter as I do not need it,purely 'educational' I love a good scrap "SO IT IS STILL NO QUARTER ON ANY SITE I'M ON:D" |
Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
Thinks its brill, shame its not for older peeps as well, having just had lazer treatment for the second time ! Deffo coming back as a man next time.

Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
Just been on the news, smear tests will still be the norm.
|
Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
I'm all for any vaccination against any disease so this gets my vote.
I heard, a long time ago, that cervical cancer is almost unknown in nuns and Jewish women. We can draw our own conclusions from that, I think. |

Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
Maybe female circumcision plays it's part, I really have no idea. Seems to be a bit of a taboo/dark topic I dont know whether it is a practice that Jewish women undergo. My thoughts are that it's probably an African tradition...I stand to be corrected.

The virus lurks under the foreskin - jewish men have theirs removed soon after birth.

Believe me Kate I have researched this subject for years, and subscribe to the University of Medical research Philadelphia USA.on the side effects of treatment chemo, surgery, etc. To say Cancer is genetic yes in a very few cases, But there are so many different ones nobody knows how many, is a misnomer.;) |
Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
Believe me Ian, not an expert at all .. just what I read and understand. Am led to believe lots of cancers and are genetic and make you more subsceptible to developing them/or not. That's why some young women are having breasts remove if their relatives have history of such .. how sad. Hope they could find a vaccine for this too soon.

Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
Cervical cancer is caused by the HPV virus...and it is true that circumcision is one of the ways to prevent the spread of the virus(it does lurk under the foreskin of the uncircumcised male) using condoms also helps to prevent the spread of this virus....having mutiple sexual partners can contribute to the spread of the condition.....however if someone has cervical cancer it does NOT mean you have been promiscuous......but your partner may have picked it up in a previous relationship.

Yea deffo a good idea. I heard this was going to happen a few weeks back and believe that people of all ages should be able to have it as well! |
Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
I had surgery (hysterectomy) at age 32, following a positive smear test.
At the time, the surgeon said that if it had not been found, I would probably not lived much past 40. So every year since I have treated as a bonus. It has not been tragic for me because I didn't want any more children. This vaccine will prevent early deaths and a lot of suffering. Parents should not prevent their daughters from having it. |

Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
Found that very interesting thanks steeljack. One thing that does alarm me is how many kids are having sex at such a young age. I know things are very different to when we were kids but the numbers are quite frightening IMHO. Whatever happened to kids being kids?

Re: Schoolgirls to receive cancer jabs
Bernie, they are exposed to all kinds of adult themes in the media and they want to appear grown up.
Little do they realise that innocence cannot be retrieved.....however, if they are going to indulge in adult pursuits then they should be protected. |

It's an excellent idea. Get them before they become sexually active. Unfortunately some 12/13 year olds already are. :(
