Power cuts

Last night ended up having a power cut at 11.30pm, all the lights were out on the road and the bypass's as well. I know some of Baxenden was out as well. Computer went off with a big bang and total darkness. Anyway got the torch and found the candles and lit them. Leccy came back on just after 1am. Had to go round then putting all the clocks right etc

Anyway who is ready for a power cut when its like that so sudden. Do you know where your torch is, do you have candles or a lantern etc. Do you have a radio with batteries in?

I know i dont - listened to radio lancs on my mobile - best was it was the twilight zone - who wants to listen to that when you are in candlelight? Twas spooky enough without listening to that!!! :D

I am not prepared for a power cut but when you read about other people having one it gives you the kick you need to get candles and suchlike in. They are on my shopping list for tomorrow.

Funny you should say that. My kids were sent home from school today at dinner time, their electric had gone off this morning and it was getting too cold for the kids in school. I thought it may be a isolated incident in our area!! maybe not.

Re: Power cuts

Several nuclear power stations are shut down for essential repairs which will take months, so if we have a severe winter which will increase power demands, we may see power cuts which are deliberate.

Re: Power cuts

It took an hour for them to ring the fire brigade?

Mine went off at 11.30pm and they rang them at 12.30am!!!

A FIRE in an electrical sub-station caused a power cut earlier today.

Firefighters were called by engineers to the Prinny Hill electrical substation, Haslingden, at about 12.30am today.

An electrical fault had sparked the small fire which caused plastic wiring casing to give off noxious smoke and affected a number of properties in Haslingden and Helmshore

Yeah our Power cut off at the bottom of Hawthorn Avenue 8.30pm, just in time for the second dose of Coronation Street! Was out for an hour, was quite pleased to see immediate response from United Utilities who arrived at the scene within 20 minutes to start fixing the problem. All I can say is thank goodness for ITV2 repeats =D

Re: Power cuts

We had numerous power cuts here, it was a regular event. The last time we had one my daughter went to the local corner shop (which wasn't affected) and bought 2 dozen candles, 2 dozen tea-lights, 3 of those enormous decorative candles and new batteries for the big torch. The next day I bought a new wick for my brass oil lamp and some paraffin for the fuel.

That was 18 months ago and we haven't had a power cut since. :o

I've got 2 old fashioned paraffin lamps upstairs and one of them has paraffin in but dont know how to light them - they were my dads he bought them as ornamental but one definately does work because i can remember him lighting it.

When I had a power cut recently there were 2 things I had overlooked - batteries in an old transistor radio, and a mobile phone with some charge in it

Re: Power cuts

Loads of Tea lights here with a few lanterns to put them in, several candles dotted about, 3 torches knocking around, mobile phone is generally full and have an old wind up radio should the need for entertainment or info gathering arise. The neighbours are a good bunch I think most of us would be checking on each other too…which is nice:)

Just as a thought. Does an event such as a power cut in your area would get the community spirit roused ?

I remember that night at the Stag by candle light. Thought Roy was going to burn the place down! :D

I'm quite prepared as we have loads of candles and I know exactly where to lay my hands on a torch so I can find the lighter to light them all.
