Unfortuantely fo them the company that 'invented' SMS didn't patent it or they would be rather rich by now.

BTW its LogicaCMG :D

No real such thing as a free text, you pay for them as part of contract or a genie-esque top up on a PAYG. They will all have been paid for at some point

Nope, I have about 50 O2 accounts on o2.co.uk get 10 free texts a month, and you only need to top up a tenner and you get about 500 free texts or something.

Jae a tenner a month gets you three hundred texts but you are paying for them because you are spending at least that tenner to get your texts.

On o2.co.uk you get 10 free texts a month, I use my friends/family's phones to register, I must have atleast 25 accounts on there. I never run out of texts on it. :D

Who pays for them?

I don't tend to use text messages, but when I do I use o2.

Who's paying for the o2 texts? We are. We're paying about £15 a month for the internet, so we're paying for them if you think about it. ;)
