Driving With False Registration Plates!!!!

My partner and i bought a Ford Mondeo from a main dealers in March this year, It was a used car with a good history. It was taxed for 6 months by the dealer and came with warranty as you would expect.

3 days ago we got the tax reminder from DVLA for a Ford Mondeo with the wrong registration number????? Or so we thought.

This set alarm bells ringing as i was only 2 digits different, so i went and checked the tax disk on the car, it had our reg on it, so i checked the log book, it had our reg on it, i checked the mot, it had our reg on it. So i phoned DVLA to my amazment they had sent the right tax reminder????

So whats the problem???? I asked my self...........................

I got the log book annd went to match the Vin Number to the log book and guess what............... IT DIDNT MATCH!!!!!

I thought oh my god we got a ringed car!!!!!! What do i do!!!!!!

So off i went to the main dealer. Who couldnt understand it, i basically went nuts at the salesman who sold it us!!!!! As you would.

He said can you leave the car with us and we will get to the bottom of it.

So he gave me a courtesy car and off i went.

Yesterday they phoned me and asked me and my partner to go down so we did. To our astonishment there was another mondeo in the area sold by them with our registation plates on it!!!!!!!!!!

When they sold the car they put the wrong plates on ours and the wrong plates on another cstomers vehicle and given us thier log book, mot etc etc and them ours!!!!!

It all seems to be getting sorted but what i still dont understand is................
HOW THE HELL DID THIS HAPPEN? arnt there procedures in place to stop this kind of thing????????

No one seems to be giving me an answer.......... and im completley puzzled and infuriated. If had an accident with the wrong plates on my car and the wrong reg on m insurance certificate would i have been insured???? did my car actuall have an MOT???????? was it actually taxed or have i been driving completley illegally for the past months???????

Im so mad, i want to name and shame but darnt for fear of repercusions!!!

phone the papers...let them name and shame...and whats the worst they can do to you ?..
its their problem...if it were to go public let them deal with it.. as for this..
"If had an accident with the wrong plates on my car and the wrong reg on m insurance certificate would i have been insured???? did my car actuall have an MOT???????? was it actually taxed or have i been driving completley illegally for the past months??????? "...

that should never enter your head when buying a car..for that I would name and shame..

Are you not going to get any legal advice? I think I would if in your position.

Actually you are right there.

What is to say that the other car hasn't got parking tickets or something like that??

You would have hell of a time proving it wasn't your car!!

i would go to the police station and ask their advice.

I think we should go to the free advice surgery at the solicitors in the morning and see what they say!

Initially you "could" have been in trouble but once you proved what happened then everything should be passed to the dealer and I think your case would have been thrown out, these things should never happen though.
1 qusetion is did you get the car you paid for or did you get the other one?
Not hard to work out who the garage was if you bought it local :)

Re: Driving With False Registration Plates!!!!

I had a car a few years ago 1999 ish and kept getting parking tickets sent from the various councils within London, Hackney and the like. Would they believe me when I said it’s just not possible….would they hell. I even had my workplace ring them and offer to show my car in full view on the works car park (CCTV Footage) at the times of the supposed parking offences. I even got a letter from a car compound to say they had the car. I rang them telling them that the car wasn’t mine and to keep the car, as by now I had got the police involved. Unfortunately, they had released the car the previous day. I eventually took the car down to Accy Police Station having had to await an appointment for some specialist from Preston to give it the once over. He said my motor was the real one, and gave me paperwork to prove the point which was good enough for me. I traded it in within a week of that.

Ok we have the car back now with its right plate, still awaiting some of the paperwork, but still!!!! NO APPOLOGY!!!!! im disgusted that the staff just pass the buck onto another department who then pass it on to another and another and so on and no one has appologised, BY THE WAY ITS EVANS HALSHAW!!!!!

Motor traders  - very few are honest.
My 2nd ex was in that trade - I saw what he and his cronies got up to - I have never bought a car 2nd hand since.

Evans Halshaw are a bunch on muppets.

I bought a brand new £16,000 car off them and about 18 months later noticed a rust spot on the rear door. Took it back and they said it was no problem as it would be covered by the warranty. They then ran some 'tests' on it and said that it wasn't covered as it had already been repaired! They accused me of repairing it myself, or that the previous owner had had it repaired. I explained that I'd bought it brand new and that the only other people that had any access to it was Evans Halshaw.
They said they'd look into it..... and I'm still waiting!

You need to get in touch with Trading Standards, they are guilty of false representation.

Good job you didn't have a bump or get pulled by the old bill, you would have not been insured or if applicable no mot do not let this bungling bunch of numpies off the hook, give them some pain, the've given it to you!

Not myself into any sort of revenge, claim blame, etc., anyone can make a mistake, if though this particular error could have caused quite a lot of sorting out for you..(and has already !)

What I think is really bad is that you have received no type of apology as yet. A bunch of flowers for your wife and free servicing to the car, say for the next three years, would not have gone amiss. Also, a big assurance that they had put in force better procedures to ensure this did not happen again. Genuine regret at the mistake in other words.

Sure you would have looked on the situation a little more forgiving then.

It's a good job they are not your 'doctors' or surgeons, simple miistakes can be costly and downright inconvenient.

Lots of car dealers change the plates, either due to the existing plates looking a little tatty or to promote their own Company by having the Company name or logo also put on the plates in small print.

Does an owner or dealer not have to have the VIN on the registration ... does not the VIN have to match the plate?

The VIN No is on the regitration document for the vehicle and yes it has to match the VIN/Chassis No on the vehicle. It also gets stamped on the MOT Certificate.
