No West Ender I wasn't, it's a long story but there is a distinct aroma of victimisation on this.

(I'm a TU rep and recently won somebody reinstatement at a CSAB.)

there is more but obviously I have appealed.

The one thing about this fiasco that has surprised me is the CEO has bitten the bullet. I expect the scapegoat to be sacked, but the person who gave the original order will probably slip sideways and end up with a nice pension and no recriminations.

Dont think this gov will last long at all, absolutely pathetic & not surprising with all the cuts backs & highly paid bigwig wasters, god i'll give me details to a master crim - cut out the middle man/gov eh:(

Not only child benefit now tax credits...what next other benefits, NI etc

What intrigues me about these latest discs is that there's six of them containing conversations between a member of staff and one customer making a complaint. That must've been one hell of a complaint. Wasn't you giving 'em an earbashing, was it, Stanleymad? :D

got a letter this morning from the inland revenue its said

i am writing to make a personal apology, A copy of some HM Revenue & customs data about famileis, including yours, who have received child benefit has been lost, The copy of the data is likely to still be on government property. The police are now conducting a search, and there is no evidence that it is in the possession of anyone else. This will not affect your child benefit payments.

The data includes you and your childs names and dates of birth, your address, your national insurance number and, where relevant, the details of the bank or building society account into which your child benefit is or was paid.

blah blah blah

then at the end it says....

i would like to offer my personal apologies for any worry or concern this data loss may cause you. And i can assure you that all efforts are being made to ensure that such a loss can never happen again.

oh ****** lol

Good God, if the CBO are sending out 25 million of those it will cost a fortune. It would have been cheaper for someone to travel to the NAO and hand deliver the discs.

Well i for one isn't amused because of this stupid un-neccessary fiasco, has make banks go security crazy now [good in sence of risk of fraud i'll grant the banks that] but a total ball ache for genuine bank account holders wishing to use thier bank services for paying bills, i cant pay me bt online now, seems its been blocked altho i can access my account online to view but anything else forget it, so for this now its back to old methods or tomorrow risk a surcharge for late payment because of this, extremely lax & careless government officials losing sensitive details, whom atm the moment need paniful methods detaching them from their small balls. Aw so i get a letter of pityful crap which i aint got yet btw, doesn't cut no mustard with me im afraid - they should all be sacked especially the higher up ones whom have responsibility for staff!!

Theres a message on my online account but just a general one for all acount users that have CB paid into their accounts but nothing to say they have added or denied online usage, tho i havent had the govs one yet hehee a laff that will be ...probably lost in the post

Even still had no email or post regarding this or even notifying this either, & its not an unusual thing in my account to do so cant undertsand it, could if it was being used at Harrods or something, then ok, but thats all the advice they have said is any unusual payments or card access may have trouble with at this time.

I bet Mr & Mrs Brown have no problems paying their bills:rolleyes:

Re: 15m bank details lost!!

Looks like they have had a TIP off :D

Police have visited London rubbish tips in their hunt for missing computer discs containing personal details of 25 million people.

The two Child Benefit discs containing names, dates of birth, bank and address details went missing on 18 October.
They were lost when a junior official sent them by courier from Tyne and Wear to the National Audit Office in London.
It is believed police fear the discs may have accidentally been thrown out as rubbish. Police have visited several tips around London to check what waste was delivered there.

Tealeaf 01-12-2007 17:43

Re: 15m bank details lost!!

How can they be sure the apology won't be lost in the post? And is it true that the letter contains your NI number? It would appear to me that if there are millions of these going out in the mail over the course of the next few days there are myriad opportunities for dodgy postmen to nick personal details.

Far be it for me to sound suspicious but this sounds like a cover up to me. If I were the minister in that department I would much prefer that word got out that the discs had been lost rather than some unscupulous person had sold the information.

There is just one tiny inaccuracy in your statement.

The disks were apparently sent via internal mail and that was handled by TNT. But your major point is valid. Why entrust such sensitive and important information to a third party? Or if there was no real alternative then it should, at least, have been sent by Registered Mail. Not that that really guarantees safe passage. Just compensation if something gets lost.

But there was an alternative. Encrypt the data and send it via email.

There is more to this debacle than they are revealing and everybody from the top downwards is trying to distance themselves from any recriminations. Heads, and mean very senior heads, must roll without a golden goodbye and a hefty chop of their pension as an example to others.

But it won’t happen ‘cos they will just pass the buck around until it lands on some poor unfortunate clerk who was only doing what he was told to do or face the sack.

West Ender 02-12-2007 20:01

Re: 15m bank details lost!!

I wouldn't be surprised if the discs are sitting on the desk of some individual who is either on leave or has left the service. I wonder if they've checked my old desk in Warrington?
