No crib in town centre

Have you noticed that the crib has not yet been put up near to the Market Hall, has it been forgotten or is it to be placed at the start of December?

maybe the folks in charge are trying to find the right size "teddy bear" to fit into the manger , so as not to offend any local sensibilities

Re: No crib in town centre

I was rather surprised to see it missing considering a great deal of time and effort was spent by volunteers restoring the figures to their former glory. They were incredibly mucky and chipped.

Think it will be there anytime soon. They used to have a blessing when the lights were switched on but that went by the board. Sure it went up in December last year.

WillowTheWhisp 30-11-2007 14:14

Re: No crib in town centre

It went up later than the lights last Christmas.

Shame the blessing of the crib isn't part of the switch on any more but maybe it's not PC. But strange considering that Christmas wouldn't exist but for Christ.

we were only discussing this last night but in the observer it mentions a blessing and carol ceremony next week, so i assume it will appear then.

Well, the Pagan festival of the winter solstice would still exist.
Perhaps that would be the commercial giant that Christmas is had Christianity not taken over the West?

I hate to sound horribly like the accywebbers I normally mock but if you had read the entire thread you would see someone mention that huge efforts have been made this year to restore the statues that normally go inside it. therefore it should be an 'outstanding' effort, not a tatty one :P

There's usually one in each town: Accrington, Church, Oswaldtwistle etc.

I haven't seen one in Ossy yet this year. I know it got smashed up last year, it was in the paper. I wonder if it will be replaced.

By the way ... we have one original gas light left in Kingston .... located at the corner of King St. and Lower Union St. ... So there is one corner of our city at which you can still be "leaning on the lampost at the corner of the street."

A SPECTACULAR LIGHT SHOW! What a splendid opportunity to encourage out of towners to visit the town's market. Celebrate the season in Accrington with all manner of food stalls and festive events, come and see how a traditional Christmas is prepared for and celebrated. Here is an invitaton also to the more ethnically separate among us to integrate a little, understand, take part in and enjoy the traditions of their new homeland.

A little forethought and planning and the preparedness to take a gamble would be all it would take to make Accrington and Hyndburn a seasonal magnet for shoppers and tourists.

Instead what do we get.... the same old tired stings of coloured bulbs and and precious little else. Is it any wonder that people prefer to do their shopping elsewhere.

Can't find one on Kingston's web sites. I guess I will have to get myself a camera and take one of my own. Photography never really interested me, but looking at the pictures on accyweb, has convinced me that it is time I tried a little photography. I hope I don't turn into a photo-crazed idiot:eek: ... but I probably will:D You may have created a monster.

On one of the freebie Sky channels, I saw a programme about hauntings in Canada and it showed an old part of Kingston where a woman was murdered in an alley by her lover , who happened to be her nephew (naughty). It seems they hold spooky tours in Kingston.

Actually yes we do have spooky tours. They are called the Haunted Walks of Kingston. Walking tours of Kingston's (very) numerous haunted sites. There is even a Haunted Pub walk, for those who like a little imbibement with their ghosts. Just Google Kingston, ON, and you will find out all about it. Along with some neat pics of our beautiful city.

I couldn't get rid of the reflection. It was either that, or if I took it from directly in front you got a lovely reflection of me looking slightly damp and bedraggled!

That's disgraceful Madhatter .. do they have the lights though ? If so, surely that's favouring Christianity and celebrating Christmas .. so what is the problem ?

Did I read recently where someone had stolen Baby Jesus from the crib in St. Anne's Square, Man .. ? Crackpots ...

Not sure if one in Clayton yet .. think maybe in Barnes Square ? Will take a look asap.

Doesn't appear to be any lights though .. only a pathetic excuse for a single thread of white lights around the tree. Passed the other night when they were lighting them (I think that was what was going on ?). Couldn't imagine any 'Ooohs and Aaaghs' at this occasion..

Sure some sort of decoration down Pickup Street and Barnes Street, then onto Sparth Road would not have gone amiss, the hanging baskets certainly brightened these streets up in the Summer. Wonder how much we were allowed ?

Yeh, you right, we will be the forgotten 'appendages'.

There is a crib, saw it tonight, but nought else apart from the blue lights strung around the tree at the lights.

Sorry, would be lovely to have some in Whalley Road too right up to Dill Hall Lights .. tend to forget about you topenders .. :D

I have just noticed tonight that there seems to be a naked Christmas tree next to that crib at the bottom of Dill Hall. Then there are those blue lights on the other trees. Seems a bit odd.

Expect they just leave it to the council workers to arrange the lights .. no designers like .. sure they do their best, but can't expect Sandringham standards (organised by Blackpool lights committee) can we ?

Blue seems to be the trend this year.

Expect only so many allowed within the budget .. so have to spread it around. Certainly had some last year, and good location too .. comes under Church, which was probably low budget this year.

Report by Graham Jones in the Observer on this, but doesn't mention Church or Clayton.

Oswaldtwistle : £9,493.20 (lol.. very definite amount .. was the 20p for extra light bulb ?). Councillor Britcliffe's area please note.
Baxenden: £ 1,163,70.

Bit of a gap there but seemingly decided by the area councils on how they spend their money. I think is money well spent, as gives us folks a 'feel-good factor'
