Re: traditions and habits
Not strange or wierd, but I love a nice home cooked roast every Sunday.
Fella hates it n always asks why we have to have it every Sunday, I dunno, we just always did when I was a kid |
Re: traditions and habits
dunno if this is in the same context but when i was little my mum used to buy us new pj's to wear on christmas eve and every year since Reece has been born i've done the same with him :D

Re: traditions and habits
I always put the loo seat/lid down, it gets on my nerves if it’s left up these days. Originally started doing it as I heard it was supposed to make money come your way…trust me, it doesn’t work:D

Re: traditions and habits
shush Ste, dont be telling all the blokes on here that ;)

I heard that you should keep the loo seat down so your money doesn't go out of the house.....well I don't know about you but I don't throw my purse down the lav. :D |
Re: traditions and habits
I always do the washing up in a specific order too.
A for traditions - we have one of going up the the Kirkstone Inn between Christmas and New Year for a hot chocolate. |

Re: traditions and habits
When we were little we always locked the door on new years eve,,because of the mummers,
Now before you think i am cracking up ,they were mostly young lads with their faces blackened and dressed in womens clothes who just walked into your house with a dustpan and brush ,and they proceded to sweep your hearth etc for money,,they never spoke but they just went mummmmmmm, they scared the hell out of us kids  |
Re: traditions and habits
Christmas tradition when i was a kid was fly down the stairs as soon as you woke up and rip open the pressies that santa had left under the tree, then a phone call from ireland on christmas morning from my cousin, play with the games i'd got from santa, then go and get dressed before my sisters and brother arrived, watch the queen (mum always made us watch the queen at 3pm), then fight over where everyone was sitting the only ones who knew where they were sitting was mum & dad everyone else had to fight over sitting on a stool (reaching the table no problem) or sitting on the settee and even then there was arguments on that who was sitting in the middle cos the table leg was in the middle. Then after eating and washing up getting the cards out and playing cards all night until mum had lost all her money and trying to get my brother in laws tin off him!!!

Re: traditions and habits
When I was little every time I went the loo I looked behond teh curtain. I'd stopped up late one night and watched a starsky and hutch program where this woman was attacked by a bloke who came from behind the batchroom curtain. It was a totally conditioned response rather than a habit as such. I guess its just like my habit of typing 'the' teh.

Re: traditions and habits
Oooh I'm glad I'm not the only one frightened of Mummers. I used to be petrified of anyone with blacked up faces, even our coal man! People with natural dark skin didn't scare me but people with painted faces and strange scary eyes that didn't match the face used to frighten the life out of me.

Re: traditions and habits
Me and Jack go for a meal with his nan,his dad and a friend of ours called Jennifer at Blackburn Cathedral sometime during xmas.
Christmas eve everyone in the house has take away of their choice for tea-even if everyone wants different eg chinese, maccy d's etc. We leave a mince pie and sherry out for Santa on xmas eve, and the biggest tradition that will always last.....christmas centres around Jack!....attention,presents,food...everything... its all about Jack :) |
Re: traditions and habits
Has anybody actually mentioned leaving the carrot/apple for the reindeer, the milk or alcohol and a mince pie for santa? I like doing that, I also write a little letter from santa in the morning for my brother and sister too.

Re: traditions and habits
We used to leave milk and a mince pie for Santa and a carrot for the reindeer but that was when the girls were little.

Re: traditions and habits
I remember sending my requests to Santa by writing notes on little pieces of paper and holding them (carefully) over the fire. They would fly up the chimney and all the way to the North Pole. I never had gifts under the tree; they appeared in a pillow case at the bottom of my bed. I remember that my great aunt Jane would bring a loaf of bread, a piece of coal, and some salt wrapped up in a twist of paper as gifts for the home, along with the box of snot rags that she bought me every year. Never a toy, always hankies! Except that one year it was socks. But these were the days when the lead soldiers were covered in paint with lead in it; and every toy had bits which could choke a kid to death.

Re: traditions and habits
Used to leave sherry or whisky and a carrot for rudolph the reindeer and a cake or biscuits depended on what mum had in!!!

Re: traditions and habits
I had a habit (not christmassy) whereby I wore my knickers inside out.
I explained this to myself by reasoning that the seams irritated my sensitive skin, and it was more comfortable to wear them that way.(princess and the pea syndrome) I later learned that it was a sign of a witch (thought I was the only one in the village ;)) So I eventually cracked the habit with the help of seamless underwear |

Me too, it was hooked over the bottom bedpost. I used to wake up several times during the night to check if he'd been and as soon as he had I would rush into my parent's room with the bulging pillow case to show them what he'd brought. Poor things must have only just gone to bed! :D |
Re: traditions and habits
We always ring our little grandson up when we see Santa,s sleigh flying over our house on xmas eve..he always comes from over the sea .:o:o:)

Re: traditions and habits
Aaaw that's lovely.
A friend of mine jingles sleigh bells around the house and even has a flashing reindeer nose which he hoopes the children might catch a glimpse of. |
Re: traditions and habits
My mum always bought us new pjs and she doesnt the same for my lad now. When i started going to church at about 8 or 9 they used to do Christmas eve carols by candle light and i always used to go to that until i was about 16 and i was draw to the booze. My mum also used to sing me a song on xmas eve as well as i went to bed. Christmas magic. Love it.
